Millions of new hotmail addresses will be created with the launch of Hotmail.co.uk. This will hopefully give many people the opportunity to preserve their desired email address without having to add several unwanted numbers or underscores.

However, the most popular first names will be auctioned off to raise money for the NSPCC.

Probably because Hotmail doesn't (yet) threaten people with the prospect of advertising linked to the content of your mail?

Good point - actually, I tend to use web mail only as either an away from laptop means of sending mails or as a source of e-mail addresses for web site registrations...:)

It's when they start tying up adverts served based on those scripts to my e-mail address, or even start using those automated scripts for other purposes that I get concerned.

I dislike the idea of commercial companies building up advertising profiles of me based on my e-mails.

I've got a Yahoo and a Hotmail web account, also a Tiscali web account. Typically these get used for registering with web sites or for 'throw away' mail use when I'm away from home.

Another concern I have for ALL web based mail accounts is in the 'small print' of the parent web sites. Yahoo, for example, states that material you post on some of their forums becomes available to them for re-use by them. I'm not suggesting at all that this will ever happen with e-mails, but I'd certainly not feel comfortable with business or private personal mail going through web based accounts.

But, if you've not got access to any private domain based mail for any reason, you pays your money and takes your choice, so to say.

hushmail is a good secure webmail service. Also do pop3 I believe.

Most pop3 mail accounts come with a webmail facility, or even IMAP.

I've seen some of these hotmail.co.uk addresses fetching between £20-50 for first names on ebay.
