View Full Version : The 2012 London Olympics
Who will be successful in bidding for the 2012 Olympic Games.
Paris are considered to be favourites and London second favourites.
London have just unveiled their plans and are promising to make it the most memorable Olympic games ever.
The final decision is to be announced on 6 July 2005.
I hope it goes to Paris!. 3 billion pound for something that is going to be forced on the public?. Visions of the student games are coming back already.
Paris will be successful.
Somehow I just can't see London beating Paris for the Olympic Bid.
I adore the Olympics and would love for it to be held in this country more than once in my lifetime. I do hope London are successful but can't see it somehow.
Don`t mind, but can anyone tell me why Barbara Windsor is part of it. Is it because she is comes from London.
If I have to go for one Moscow.
I would love it if london won the bid but i doubt it the rest of europe hate us and look down on us anyone else agree or am i just being paranoid...
I think its pants tho' that last year wimbledon fc applied for planning permission to build a new ground in merton and the council denied it saying they could find a suitable site
(so they moved to milton keynes !! )...but now theyve decided one of the olympic grounds can go there !!!!

Berberis 05-07-2005, 14:08 Sorry if this has already been posted, I did search and didn't find any threads the same.
It’s becoming pretty apparent that the fight for the 2012 Olympics is going to be between London & Paris.
Who do you think should win and why?
I think London deserves it because the city hasn't hosted a major event in some time. London could do with the investment.
Berberis 05-07-2005, 14:12 Could a MOD edit the title of this poll to correct my typo please?

But won't it be us (the taxpayers) who pay for it ?
Swan_Vesta 05-07-2005, 14:17 I hope Paris gets it.
Lets face it, London's creaking transport infrastructure will be unable to handle the level of attendance, The majority of the nation couldn't be arsed judging by recent news coverage and the amount of investment would be astronomical.
Let the French over invest in white elephant complexes and be saddled with unusable structures built at massive cost. Go on Chirac, have it ........ Your people'll hate you even more than they do now.
Agent Orange 05-07-2005, 14:42 I would love to see the Olympics awarded to London for one reason only - to p**s on the bonfire of that arrogant president over the channel.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but aint the majority of the funding for the Olympics coming from Red Ken and his hike in London council tax and private finance? If that's the case then I don't mind those Londoner's stucking their hand in their pockets for the benefit of the UK.
Letting Paris host it, and pay for it, then we go over there and win everything would be the most delicious victory, non ?

Yer it would be> but we would not win that much
I'd love to see us win it.
It'll cost a lot of money but it will revitalise a lot of London and make us the centre of the world for a few weeks.
French'll win it, after all they HAVE to win something or they'll kick even more toys out oft' pram.
Greybeard 05-07-2005, 20:23 London are bound to get it after the "charm offensive" put on by the Blairs and the Beckhams :P
Absolutely :gag:

Plus anything to David Beckham is enough to put anybody off!! :gag:
It will make no difference to most people if London does get it, but what will be really annoying is that when Paris are chosen to be hosts, the knives will be out for............Tony Blair and The Labour Party.

I saw the presentation this morning and think it was the icing on the cake. It has been a brilliant campaign. I take my hat off to Seb Coe even though he is a tory *******! ;)
and to knock the French bid into a cocked hat... how delicious!
Chirac can go back to his fine cuisine, and dine on the ashes!:hihi:

Another chance for another great big cockup. I sense another Dome in the making.. It's going to cost billions ands benefit very few. The French were welcome to it.
Me thinks that a certain Mr Blair will be gloating a little over a certain Mr Chirac this evening at Gleneagles.

"To live is to risk dying. To do is to risk failure.
To laugh is to risk appearing a fool. To love is to risk not being loved in return.
To cry is to risk appearing soft and sentimental.

To place your ideas, dreams, and desires before people is to risk ridicule.
The greatest omission in life is to risk nothing. The person who risks nothing gets nothing, has nothing, is nothing. He may avoid suffering, pain and sorrow, but he does not learn, grow, live, or love. He is only a slave - chained by safety - locked away by fear. Only a person who is willing to risk, not knowing the results, is alive."

But we've done it before and the Common Wealth. We could be brilliant at organising it..
So going to be optimistic about it, get excited and hope for a great sporting event in our country.. :)
Great news, this will give a much needed boost to out capital city and I have no doubt as a nation we'll do a fantastic job. Shame it's so far away.
Best thing about it, was the French reaction :D. They were gutted, its fantastic :P

Great result for Londoners, - they get £billions pumped into their infrasructure. For us it will mean even greater neglect of the infrastructure, a further deterioration of the national rail and road network and a hike in taxation to pay for all the white elephant construction the Olympics will entail.
Tony Blair couldn't have wished for a better distraction from all the nasty bits of legislation he'll be pushing through while everyone's eye is off the ball. :D

metalman 06-07-2005, 12:24 London has won the bidding to stage the Olympics in 2012. Is this a good thing for the whole country, or will it be a bottomless pit of taxpayers' money down the drain. Discuss.
RazorSHarp 06-07-2005, 12:24 Although I would like to say well done to London for winning the Olympic bid.
Who else thinks that there will be no benefit from this, other than to profit making organisations, and will result in even more ridiculous taxes for the UK population.
Are the people of Sheffield still not footing the bill from the world student games all those years ago???

How much of pessimist do you want to be? When your friends tell you they've got engaged do you say "Oh no, another divorce settlement to sit and watch" or when you get a meal in a restaurant: "Oh no I'd better go get the antibiotics now to combat the gastroenteritis that I will be suffering tomorrow".

Possibly. However, I think the thousands of people in the construction (and associated) industries who will find themselves in great demand over the next seven years will see more positives than negatives.
Similarly, the thousands of jobs having the Games in England will undoubtedly create, plus the millions and millions of pounds worth of potential tourist revenue can only be good for the country, right? There are pros and cons to everything.
Are the people of Sheffield still not footing the bill from the world student games all those years ago??? [/B]
I would like to think that the Olympics would be better run than the WSG were.
I think the olympics games are a good thing. They may cost a lot, but is the country really struggling that much? i think we have a pretty stable economy so can put on a bit of a show. National pride isn't at an all time high so maybe it'll be good to give it a boost.
Also its the kind of promotion that sport needs: we haven't been that succesful over the past few years. Maybe this will spark some investment into sport in general.

Realist more like. Come on, we are still paying for the Sheffield Student games. We built a dome that was a disaster and the fraud enquiries are on going, the list is endless! We can't can't even build a new Wembly Stadium, whats chance has this got!
As for it will make loads of money.. Only for the dodgy contractors and their mates who build it.
ZEDEX48K 06-07-2005, 12:41 and I am sure it will benefit Sheffield too as Don Valley running track as well as the Englsih Institute of Sport and Ice Sheffield will be used in preperation and possible bases for teams.

The commonwealth games in manchester went pretty well I think...and now they have a wealth of excellent sporting facilities from which all can benefit for many years - I enjoyed the olympic class swimming pool while I was living there.

Also, the Olympic football tournement tends to be held at stadiums outside the main city (Athens this year had matches as far away as Thessaloniki!)
Hillsborough was used in Euro 2000 and has the 10th largest capacity of any stadium in England after Old Trafford, St. James's in Newcastle, Stadium of Light in Sunderland, City of Manchester Stadium, Anfield, Villa Park, Stamford Bridge, Elland Road and Goodison - not including the "new" Wembley and whatever new stadium they build in Stratford.
Why not some football here?

Yeah - sadly there is a little reserved pessimism for the transport element. Will they drop the Ken Livingston vehicle charges so we can travel to it easier? Didn't know 2jags was to be involved. But would he have anything to do with it if Labour aren't elected next time or he is involved in a big scandal and has to zoom off in 2jags to political retirement?
But Sheffield could be the city to benefit cos' whilst they are building the stuff in London we have lots of facilities already that are tip top for all to train at.
We'll be inundated with athletes from hot countries coming to acclimatise - trying to run marathons in the rain, snow and thunder ( all in one day here) training to suss out how to use the lockers at Ponds Forge etc..
WHAT A RESULT
England 1 France 0

2012 Olympics in London
London has today been announced as the host for the 2012 Olympics.
Commenting on the news Councillor Jan Wilson, Leader of Sheffield City Council said: "We’re absolutely delighted. This is fantastic news for the region. We should see Sheffield get its share of the action as athletes attending the games can come and train in the world class sporting facilities we have available in Sheffield. The city’s economy will benefit from being associated with the 2012 Olympics, possibly through major events in the years leading up to it, as well as the people it will bring into the city with visiting athletes or tourists."
It couldn't be a worse result. The thought of all those smug athletes , bursting with health , being interviewed , ad nauseum on the , "telly" , doesn't bear thinking about.
The cost will be astronomical , as usual and the sports facilities , "left over" , afterwards will mostly rot away , considering our nation's decline in sport.
It will give Blair an extra reason to gloat , which must be bad in anyone's judgement and London will be clogged up and more unbearable than it usually is. Almost every country that has held the Olympics in recent years has lost out and it makes one wonder why we ever wanted to host it to begin with . Prestige ? Do you honestly think any more of , say Sydney or Seoul because THEY hosted the Olympics ?

I may even start saving up and make a holiday of it by heading down there to watching some decent events.
LordChaverly 06-07-2005, 15:54 I would be interested to know what people think about this
absolutely brilliant.
I'm so pleased we have got it.
What a fantastic thing to look forward to. My country will host the biggest event in the world.
The country will be full of people from all over the world.
We will be the focus of the world.
A large mass of my capital will be revitalised with loads of new facilities.
Sheffield will have loads of Olympic teams here for preparation. Great for our economy
Kids will have the biggest incentive and stimulus to get of their backsides and get active.
Great for British sport, great for Britain
Best thing to happen to this country in my lifetime
p.s. pick a ranodm sport where we don't currently ahve a team and get practicing.
You bet we should be jumping for joy, this will be the only time that our generation will have the privelidge of of hosting the worlds premier sporting event.
Let's now start getting behind the bid and support it not knocking it because it's darn sarf.
I think it's brilliant, for all the reasons stated by Robbie.
Now what are we good at that we can practising?
Curling???
I was thinking more handball

BoppinBruce 06-07-2005, 16:24 No way. It will break up, yet again the Eastend. If it was in Crookes and sent all those people away what would Sheffielders say? If you dont know about the Eastend and its culture and have never been there to see for yourself, please, you dont have a right to comment. Phone calls today tell me its worst thing that has happened. Buying property that peolpe have lived in for years. Breaking up communities.
Yes it's a sad day for Eastenders.
The cost is immensive.
Yay snooker, is that true?? i said it today as a joke!! Oh well i don't think I will still be living in this country then but I might pop back if snooker is on the cards!! To be honest I'm not that bothered about the Olympics. It is a shame we are still in dept from the Student games in Sheffield, if we had paid it off I might be able to get a bit more excited about the whole thing, I do worry about cost.
The whole team has done a grand job of winning the bid though i must admit.
Jumping for joy?
I think not!
All a case of bread and circuses imho.
This government has shown itself incapable of delivering even one relatively modest project in the shape of the Dome. Does anyone really believe that the multiple projects including transport, communications and multiple arena can be turned out within the £20 per Londoner budget that has been allocated?.
Expect a call on the national budget and everyone North of Watford will be expected to help pick up the tab for a two week bash in higher tax bills for many years to come. Money, if it has to be taxed ,which would be better spent on sorting out many of the other problems in this country.
The only crumb of comfort in all of this is that the French didn't win, an occasion that i would have liked both sides to lose.
ZEDEX48K 06-07-2005, 16:40 Yes we should be jumping not just for the country and being able to attend without going long distance but also for our own city!
I am sure it will benefit Sheffield too as Don Valley running track as well as the Englsih Institute of Sport and Ice Sheffield and Ponds Forge will be used in preperation and possible bases for teams.
The knock on effects for local hotels and the corporate hospitality industry are incalculable.

;) True....but listen up a minute -
There will be a report published very soon about the state of progress achieved in the upgrade to the London Tube system. This report has been deliberately delayed because of the effect it would have had on London's Olympic bid, and it reveals that Metronet has fallen seriously behind with station refurbisment and track upgrades; in fact only a third of the rail replacement due to have been completed by the end of March 2005 has been achieved.
It now seems likely that for Metronet to catch up with the schedule and complete the work in time for the Olympics there will need to be extensive and prolonged line closures over much of the network in the years ahead. Should cheer London commuters up considerably and have them roundly cursing the Olympics and Tony Blair. Wily old Red Ken should do well out of it though...he always said that the job should not be given to a private consortium :D
clogginchris 06-07-2005, 21:56 Absolutely brilliant decision. Good for the UK and good for sport. It will be a fantastic event. I've been jumping for joy all afternoon.

Personally I'd rather have the world cup in England but then again I thing of more yobbos coming to the UK and it sickens me at the thought of them trashing the place.
Still, the games in 2012 eh!

Am I wrong, or didn't Manchester build bigger and better facilities for some other event after our 'World Student Shames'
Are Sheffields facilities still world class after all this time?

Yes, they are. Have you seen the EIS? It's a fantastic facility, built way after the Games had been and gone, and is the envy of most big cities in the UK.
Don't be surprised to see one of the major teams - the USA, China and Australia - coming to Sheffield in 2012 for their pre-Olympic training camp.
DanSumption 10-07-2005, 01:01 Got to agree with BoppinBruce: I used to live in Forest Gate, and cycled along the Lea past Three Mills Island (site of the original Big Brother house) on my way to and from central London every day. It was a little spell of tranquility in an otherwise deranged cycle ride. I would often stop and watch the herons, sometimes three or four of them at a time fishing by the river. I believe most of that area's going to be concreted over now, and it makes me so sad.
