View Full Version : Canon EOS 300D-any advice? franc1987 19-11-2004, 22:00 +++++++++++++++++++++++++ SlimboyFat 19-11-2004, 22:15 Brothers just got one from www.warehouseexpress.com . It was £600 (£500 with the cashback) with free case and free 256 meg card. He did say the day after he ordered it that the price had changed but im sure it wasn't by £100. Tried to take a look but the sites running a bit slow at the moment. ptigga 19-11-2004, 22:17 Originally posted by franc1987 Please note:: its pointless reading on if your not into photography. I currently own a Canon EOS 300V which i was bought for my 16th a little over a year ago. I am absolutly smitten with this camera. I love it in everyway. But now iv set my eyes on something better. The EOS 300D!! Having been saving my pennies since september i now have enough. But i seem to be having an awful lot of trouble parting with the pennies! I want this camera so much yet £700 is so expensive! (Only £600 with the cash back offer) So the point to this post is: Does anyone own a 300D and can anyone give me any advice in purchasing a digital SLR. I dont really want to buy any other camera than a canon just because i love my current one so much and i think they r virtually the same camera? I've been playing with it in Harrisons today and it is bloody fantastic and im going back tomorrow to have a proper talk to him about it cos i have lots of questions. But they r trying to sell me something so they probably wont be entirely honest (altho i do love that shop :D its like heaven! Any info wud be very very greatful cheers f x I full understand your enthusiam. I've got a little Canon A80 and I love it to bits. The 300D the 10D and the 20d are all excellent cameras. I believe that you should be able to use all your existing lenses with any of these camera bodies. I don't have any personal experience with any of these cameras but I know a couple of people with 10Ds who love them to bits. Check out the review of the 300D here at Steve's Digicams here: http://www.steves-digicams.com/2003_reviews/300d.html vidster 19-11-2004, 22:42 A good site for camera reviews is dpreview (http://www.dpreview.com/) (Thanks to matsalleh for the link).;) mr.blaze 20-11-2004, 03:03 Stick with the Canon, they are fantastic camera's. My friends just spent £7000 on one just for the body :o matsalleh 20-11-2004, 07:27 Wish I could afford one ! Here's the link to the 300D forum all your answers are there. http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/forum.asp?forum=1031 But one word of advice do a search first, people are friendly but the same questions are asked all the time, so sometimes do not get answered. Good Luck and Enjoy. Phanerothyme 20-11-2004, 11:58 The Nikon d70 is a peach too. I wanted a 300d, and then a 20d, but now I want a D70 - check it out at dpreview, beats the canon hands down. you can of course use your existing EOS lenses with Canons, but in common with all dSLRs you will get a 1.4-1.6x multiplier on magnification with all non dSLR lenses. rickmiles85 20-11-2004, 12:33 Ive got an Ixus 500, alright its not in the same league as the 300D but its still a Canon. Excellent battery life and smart looks. Takes wonderful pictures too! franc1987 20-11-2004, 17:38 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Phanerothyme 20-11-2004, 18:25 Its a lovely camera thought the 300d (I believe neeeeeeeek has one) and I wish I could afford one myself, let alone the D70. Make sure you post your pics! And that 1.4x magnification thing is really not a problem especially if telephoto is your thing. I think its great that you can use all your AF EOS lenses without too much problem. I am still shooting on a very compact Nikon Coolpix 3500. It still has the best macro on it I have seen on a digicam (focus down to 25mm) but Interchangeable lenses really is the next step. neeeeeeeeeek 20-11-2004, 19:01 I have a 300d and it rocks! If it goes wrong it's a nightmare as it took them six weeks to fix mine and I had only had it for a week... I was just unlucky to be honest! I don't know how to use it but it is wonderful. I bought mine from BH Photovideo in America and someone who was coming over brought it over for me so it only cost me £500 with a 5 year warranty and that was a few months ago. Not much use unless you know someone in America who can bring it over as if customs spot it they stick VAT on top of the price. As mine came from America it is the digital rebel version, same camera apart from slightly different firmware. I would also advise getting the kit as the lens they supply is very good and designed especially for it. Just ask it I can tell you anything. ncrossland 22-11-2004, 09:03 I'm looking at getting one at the moment - only £599 on Amazon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000C9VZN/txtbux-21) (plus you get £100 cashback from Canon at the moment) franc1987 22-11-2004, 15:25 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++= ncrossland 22-11-2004, 15:35 Originally posted by franc1987 i heard that the cashback only counts in actual stores and not on the web or that wud be my first port of call. altho maybe not cos i no i always have harrisons to fall back on if i buy from there cos they go out of ur way to help u No - I've had cashback from Canon before for other cameras bought on the web. I've got the cashback form for this offer, and it doesn't mention any restriction - just that you have to enclose an original receipt. theflyingfish 22-11-2004, 15:54 on www.dpreview.com you can look at the specs side by side of the 300D and 20D. If I were you I would spend a bit more and go for the 20D. Do you already have canon lenses? If not it might be worth widening your search and taking a look at the Nikon. Don't not use your lenses, just becasue of the magnification factor - a 200mm lens becomes a 300mm lens - you can still use it why consign it to the cupboard?!! - you don't need to buy a whole new kit (wide angle is a bit more problematic though). Whichever you go for though will work out good value for money because you can shoot and shoot and shoot without additional cost... But I wouldn't buy the 300D for one reason and that is the 3 second start up time...that is waaaaay too long. And one feature alone that the D70 has over both the 300D and 20D is spot metering - I can't beleive that neither the Canon models have that?! neeeeeeeeeek 22-11-2004, 16:26 I agree with you flying fish that the 20D would be great but it's not just saving a little more, it's basially twice the price! Ebuyer also sell the 300d for £509.99 +VAT theflyingfish 22-11-2004, 18:01 Originally posted by neeeeeeeeeek I agree with you flying fish that the 20D would be great but it's not just saving a little more, it's basially twice the price! Ebuyer also sell the 300d for £509.99 +VAT Yes it is - and a DSLR for 500 quid is an absolute bargain - I paide 650 for my Olympus 8080... The Olympus 300E comes out in the next few weeks and Olympus are directing it as a direct compititor to the 300D rumoured at a similar price as well - worth waiting to check it out? Don't think the 300D would quite do it for me though, I will stay with my 8080 for the time being... matsalleh 22-11-2004, 20:33 Canon were giving a free 128mb compact flash card to any one who had bought a Canon this year.Don't know if the offer is still available though. This link may be of interest (nothing to do with free offer) http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21767 franc1987 22-11-2004, 21:26 ++++++++++++++++++ theflyingfish 23-11-2004, 07:57 did you buy it in the end then? neeeeeeeeeek 23-11-2004, 08:29 Not that you need another one but I got a spare battery from Ebay for about 8quid in total, shipped from Thailand. It does not say Canon on it but apart from that it's as good, holds a full charge etc etc.. Bago 23-11-2004, 12:06 u want to check out http://www.7dayshop.com/. They are based somewhere like Guernsey, so the prices is that little bit cheaper. Body only = 529 GBP ? With 1 lens = 589 GBP inc VAT. I just recently bought a G5 before it went off the market in May. Also considered the 300D too, but was too pricy. Even though I could've bought it cheaper, cos I was abroad at the time. I thought that 300D is now the lowest entry digi-SLR ? Or am I wrong in my research ? If I was in your shoes, I would buy Canon still, since your lens can then be used on both the digi, and the manual 300V which u already own. I'm no expert yet, but I thought that its the lens that maketh a SLR camera ? Canon does pretty good lenses...so... neeeeeeeeeek 23-11-2004, 12:38 Technically it is now the low level entry model but that does not mean it is not stunning! It uses the same sensor as the 10D which was Canon's professional version, they just took a few of the advanced features out and housed it in a cheaper body.. 2/3 months ago they were still £800. The Nikon D70 came out about the same time as I bought my 300D but I got it for £500 from America and the D70 would still have been much much more. Pretty much as soon as you buy anything in the digital market it will already be out of date, if you are feeling flush buy me a Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II, only 3grand! franc1987 23-11-2004, 16:09 i'm (hopefully) going to pick it up tomorrow :D neeeeeeeeeek 23-11-2004, 16:29 If not then Ebuyer have them and you could get a 1gb 40speed PQI card for less than 60quid at the same time. Or a fast Lexor one for slightly more. I would recomend getting fast compact flash cards as the files are quite large in high quality. franc1987 24-11-2004, 20:26 i got it :D not allowed it till xams tho  |
