View Full Version : Numpty Bus Driver
Who was the numpty bus driver driving a 95 this afternoon/ It was a single decker bus driving towards Walkley and he passed the stop just past Brook Hill Roundabout at 17:29. All 4 of us at the stop stood and moved out infront of the shelter ready to get on when he sailed past without stopping.
People. At a bus stop. Standing up in a line. Obviously waiting to catch a bus. His bus wasn't even a quarter full. Bloody numpty
It's a shame he sped past too fast for us to get his registration number.
Bloody numpty. Do First actually want any custtomers?
Big props to the guy driving the Double Decker who stopped at 17:33 to pick us up from the same stop. He was dead polite too and he stopped just before he was about to leave for a woman who had been running for the bus at the univerisity stop. Good man.
Did you signal the bus to stop? as I notice that on First's website that is what they ask you to do as that particular stop is also used by other services.
Not as bad as the idiot driving one of the little rural links bus other day on my way home. He was empty an all ights inside the bus was switched off, must have been going to the depot or something, anyhow he came to the big post office roundabout in the outside late, signalled to come into the middle lane, then as he got further round he was trying to get into the right hand lane. I am glad everyone on the road dosnt act like this, anyhow he failed to move further over into the correct lane and he continued down towards fir vale when his attempts failed :hihi:

No, I don't think anyone actually stuck their arm out, but we were all stood on the edge of the pavement. I know exactly what the bus driver was thinking: "Stupid people - didn't stick their arms out. Hah! Me evil nasty grumpy bus driver. Them peasants. Me not stop."

Surely this is mentioned on the bus stop itself?
If not what happens to people who have not net access??
FTR. I was taught by my parents to "stick mi mit out to stop the bus" way back when.

Here you go...
1. numpty n. (100%)
(pl. numpties) Scottish informal a stupid or ineffectual person.
(From The Concise Oxford English Dictionary in English Dictionaries & Thesauruses)
I saw the A1 bus at Sheffield Airport yesterday. Somebody was at the stop, he put his arm out to stop the bus and the bus carried on regardless. A car behind saw this and sounded his horn - the bus still carried on. Half an hour wait till the next bus.
At least it turned up - two nights ago I had to drive a colleague to the train station to get her train home because TWO busses had failed to turn up.
even though i think all bus drivers and ignorant ***** its common sense for one to stick ones hand out to stop a bus,so in this case who ever was at the front of the que is the numpty.
I never wait for people at the front to stick their hand out because they usually never do.
I stick mine out anyway no matter where i am in the queue.
as from past experience , if you dont, the bus goes sailing past.

But the bus is scheduled to stop at that bus stop regardless and if he can see people waiting for his bus he should have stopped.
muddycoffee 20-11-2004, 09:42 In the past I know busses had to stop at certain busstops, but I wasn't aware that they had to anymore.
I agree that there are many miserable bus drivers, but I suppose it can be dangerous sometimes, and they really don't get paid very much, if the adverts are anything to go by, so you're hardly likely to attract the most expert of the local population in the public relations field, attracted to the vocation of local bus driver
nuf_said 20-11-2004, 09:52 Hero bus driver:-
Just for a change here's the opposite view.
Years ago I was on a bus which suddenly stopped. When I looked out I saw the bus driver running across the road to where a woman was looking aghast at her car which had dense smoke and some flame coming from the engine. The bus driver lifted the bonnet slightly and sprayed a fire extinguisher into the fire. When the fire was out he lifted the bonnet and pulled out the ingnition leads.
He calmly walked back to the bus, set off again, all without a word.
I rang the bus company to congratulate them etc - their bloke was made up - he'd never had a compliment before for one of his drivers.
Kirky.
I bet this bus driver thread has made your day eh
Ian Mitchell,
With the reference to bus stops nowadays throughout the UK it is standard practice to signal a bus that you require it as so many buses and bus companies can use the same stop and is indeed included in many company websites under the heading'How to catch a bus'.

The A1 is terrible, I'm glad I don't have to catch it anymore!!! Many a time it either sailed past without stopping or didn't turn up at all.
My favourite was getting loads of drivers who didn't know the route and you had to direct them all the way back to the bus station. Although the guy who took a wrong turn and ended up near Meadowhall instead of going through Hyde Park and round was pretty funny...
WallBuilder 20-11-2004, 16:30 I'd quite like it if they'd stop talking about it and actually did it. What do you mean? I hear you all exclaim.
I wish that when a bus passes apoint say two hundred yards from the bus stop, it triggers an electronic gizmo and a nice little message flashes up on the bus stop telling you what number bus is approaching. Then when you've got a lot of people milling in front of you you can say 'does anyone want this bus'? and then if no-one does get to the front of the queue with your arm ready to outstretch.
Yes before anyone says it i do know there have been trials done in other areas.
franc1987 20-11-2004, 17:50 ++++++++++++++++++++++++
I'm completely astounded that First have found the need to make a document to tell you how to catch a bus!!! :loopy: :loopy: :loopy:
It even tells you how to pay the driver, and "all you then have to do is find a seat"
Even people in the poorest, remotest countries have some kinds of bus services, yet the inhabitants of the fourth largest economy in the world get a guide on how to press the button to stop!! :loopy:
I bet First are scared in case they get sued by someone who didn't know how a catch a bus!!

For information on how to catch a bus in South Yorkshire go to First Group South Yorkshire Division click on General information then select step by step guide on how to catch a bus I think it incredible that this information even needs to be publicised.
wasn't it a lot simpler when the stops had request wrote on them.?

Not true. All bus stops except the terminus are request stops (compulsory bus stops went the way of the dinasaur). If you want a bus to stop you stick your hand out. It's the way it works. Most bus stops have more than one route passing it so the driver needs to know it's his bus you are waiting for. Even at stops where only one route passes they are used to youths hanging round bus shelters not actually wanting a bus, so they stop if requested.

Captain_Scarlet 21-11-2004, 11:52 There's a **** take of First's laughable brochure:
(I hate pdf)
How to get on a bus (http://www.smokefilledroom.co.uk/Gregsworld/Files/divers/Howtogetonabus.jpg)
see 95 drivers are ace. There is one driver who turns up 15 minutes late every morning without fail Now we are all fed up that he is late but no one complains. We say please and thankyou and he just grunts or completely ignores you....
a career in fast food beckons Mr Driver....

Ah well, here with TFL some stops are request stops red background with a white TFL logo and some are Bus Stops where they have to stop - and the pattern is the other way around

I very much doubt that the same driver turns up late every morning, considering we work on a rota system which means we never do the same services at the same time every day.You lie me thinks.

It took me less than 10 minutes to do that, it's more for the entertainment value than the syntax. :D

so explain why one bus is late every day?
one specific bus?
Carborundum 21-11-2004, 20:40 What a silly mis-spelt joke that was ...
Its the numpty person in front of the queue who was in the wrong - too lazy to stick his/her arm out - ah the couch potato society - now society must read their thought as well ...
Most drivers do a damn good job in difficult circumstances and no I am not a driver or a relative of theirs ...

yes i agree it is highly unlikely to be the same driver every morning,,,,,,,neh impossible.
I too being one of the evil demons you all call bus drivers,at least doing the job you get a true insight into what the general public are realy like.
and some times it aint nice.

But Seriously if its an everyday occorance then i suspect that its getting stuck in traffic somewhere on route.

Sorry to drag this old thread up again, but I'm hoping the fat, grey-haired, bus driving edited who nearly wrote out my car and family today reads it.
Was it you?
7:30ish this evening. Bottom of Queens Road, turning up towards St Mary's Road.
Try to remember, if a car is already taking up the extra space that your bus needs, then you wait till the car has moved before you drive like a braindead idiot through the gap, taking up one and a half lanes, forcing the car to stop, dead, with inches to spare.
You'll know if it was you, Single deck, First mainline, 'out of service' with the number 0 showing and chatting to some woman who was standing next to you. You came close to hitting half a dozen cars, especially the burgundy car who you nearly ran up the back of because he was 'thoughtless' enough to stop at the red lights at the Queens Road/Granville Road roundabout and slow you down.
That was seconds before you thought it clever to overtake me on the left hand bend as you leave the roundabout - me in the centre lane, you in the right hand lane with the back end of your bus cutting the corner and forcing me to brake hard and watch your back wheels miss my bonnet by inches.
You then cut in front of me into the middle lane and ran the next red lights. You then hogged the road, both lanes, all the way down Shoreham Street and Sheaf Street into Pond Street as though you were the only bugger on the road.
:loopy:
Thank your lucky stars that my father-in-law who is 85 doesn't have a weak heart. Unfortunately though, it's clear that you have a weak brain.

Captain_Scarlet 06-04-2005, 20:04 Harsh words, but I've been on buses with drivers like that... I'm not always reassured.
Oh and red means stop, not accelerate.
Yeah, anyone with slower responses than me - or even if I had been distracted for a second - would have been under the plonker's back wheels.
Hope he catches plague, the ar$ehoĢe!!
Carborundum 06-04-2005, 21:09 WHat a stupid reckless bus driver - do they learn anything at bus school or are they letting any old wreckless braindead idiots drive buses these days - putting the lives of everyone at risk ?

I trust you have reported this to First bus and lodged a complaint....
Sound idea, but not much point really is there.
a: I am the only witness [along with my passengers]
b: He will probably say that I squeezed him out. My word against his.
c: This is normal driving for a lot of First Mainline drivers!
Now if he'd actually hit anyone, I'd be on his back like Julian Clary.
re-complaining to First
Last year i had the misfortune to be left stranded by the last bus out of town on the Stocksbridge 57 route. I arrived at the bus stop on West Bar as always with 5 minutes until it was due. As the bus approached i was at the front of the queue and stuck my arm out. I could see from the speed he was doing he had no intention of stopping, and he kept in the middle lane. I stepped into the nearside lane waving frantically for him to stop, another driver was stood next to him but they both just looked at me and smiled.
By now i was seething, it was the cheek/attitude that they had clearly seen me but were arrogant enough to acknowladge this. I ask myself what if i had been someone more vulnerable left stranded in town at 12.00am, and this had occurred.
Luckily i had some money and got a taxi back to Stocksbridge, but on route we overtook the bus concerned. In Stocksbridge i left the taxi, and then waited for the bus to arrive. This time he stopped and i boarded and his face was a picture, i was not abusive (but was still mad) and i explained my anger, and asked for his driver number, he refused and was not wearing any visable badge, his attitude was deplorable and he became abusive toward me, then put out a radio message for the police to attend.
At this stage i just left the bus knowing how the police would have reacted to this incident.
I went home and the following day telephoned South Yorks PTE,who gave me contact details at First. They were not interested in the slightest, and a few days later i submitted a letter, in which they responded saying the matter had been dealt with by First (i bet).
This is in no way critisim aimed at all First drivers and i know from comments on here some do an excellent job. But as an earlier thread mentioned they have a duty to the public, and you hear of all the horror stories of Kids and Women being left stranded at bus stops etc. Some of the drivers and managers need an education in operating a public service.
I for one would no longer rely on a late night bus, after this incident, either the car or a taxi from now on.

Almost exactly the same thing happened to me last Saturday evening, about the same time.
Coming out of Bramall Lane, turning right towards St Mary's Gate. I'm taking the left off the roundabout in the right hand lane. This ***** bus driver tries to turn left from Arundel gate into the SAME LANE while I'm there! Ran me up the ***** kerb and then proceeded to push me further up the side of the road.
For information to those who think I was just a bad driver, the bus was not on the roundabout when I started turning. He came on much too fast and needed both lanes to turn the bus. I was the unfortunate one who happened to be in his way. Guy behind me nearly got clobbered by the back end.
I'm afraid that, although I used to stick up for bus drivers, and still do if they obviously perform a good service, the stereotypical a***hole bus driver is more and more common.
ToryCynic 07-04-2005, 15:12 I was having difficulty using the bus service whilst I was in your city last week - the chap that was driving the 31 was from Blackheath; I was having difficulty getting from Walkley library to Mr. Relative's Road. I found my way, but when I went out, and caught the 95 back from where I was visiting, I couldn't remember where to get off and asked where Compton Street was and very few of the passsangers knew - nor did the driver, but I found my way back again!
Going back to the 31 bus stop - I was waiting at the interchage, and a senior citizen told me that I the driver would know - however, I later discovered that the driver and I were both foreigners to the city.
This senior citizen kept saying:
"Oh, Harold Road - you must get off there for Compton Street"
"Is Harold Road near by, then?"
"Oh no, Harold Road is round back-a Hillsborough - but, aye Compton Street is nearby"...
Ah, well, I found my way around and arrived safely at Mr. Relatives.
