View Full Version : Driving in Sheffield
jonnysammut 17-05-2007, 12:12 Don't know if its just me but are drivers getting worse in sheffield???
I have a nice drive every morning through rush hour traffic to Eccy road, and my god the amount of drivers i see that just simply cant drive shocks me!!!!!!!
whats happening?? lol
newvanandman 17-05-2007, 13:28 what makes you think this is restricted to sheffied?
Its not they are everywhere and getting worse.the trouble is yellow money boxes cant stop them. And all the police are interested in is exceeding the speed limit fines.
I think they are getting worse, in the last week on Ecclesall Road I've had 6 very near misses caused by drivers who can't stay in their own lane, don't look before pulling out or speed along at stupid speeds...
Drivers are the same, there's just more of them all the time.
digirunoff 17-05-2007, 13:44 As a pedestrian I find it worse. It used to be a joke that people would accelerate to hit you, now this actually happens! I was crossing on eccy road the other day and had to practically leap out of the bus lane when this subaru blazed it past me.
I think a big part of the problem with Ecclesall Road is congestion, drivers on the road between 8am and 10am and then 3pm until 7pm are a hell of a lot more aggressive and dis-courtieous (Someone spell that for me!) than drivers at other times of day.
This could be impatience at taking so long to cut through the traffic each day, not an excuse though as everyone on the road is in the same boat! It could also be because the majority of people at those times won't let you in off a side street etc. the drivers take risks to get into the traffic queue.
No excuse is the amount of drivers drifting lanes on Ecclesall roundabout, I drive around there everyday at about 3:30 and every day I get cut up of nearly taken out by a numpty with no lane sense.

It is true that there is no one monitoring bad or dangerous driving any more. It is interesting to watch traffic cops on BBC when there appear to be cars all over the place.
I drive around 1000 miles a week and if I see one police car a week I am surprised.
This lack of presence just encourages careless, agressive and dangerous driving.
Its getting to a stage when I honestly feel I am living on borrowed time!
Sounds like there's been a mass influx of Maltese to the eccy road area recently
Ousetunes 17-05-2007, 14:56 A month back I spent a week in Cornwall. I travelled 842 miles and didn't have any problems driving....
Until I reached Sheffield of course. The same applied last year when I took the family to North Wales. Not a problem, not a 'Sunday driver' or 'boy racer' in sight.
Sheffield truly has some of the worst drivers in my experience. If you don't believe me, go drive in any direction away from the city for two to three hours then head back and you'll know you're back in Sheffield straight away (25 in a 40, no indication, buses pulling out, white-van-man up your arsehole etc, etc).
jonnysammut 17-05-2007, 14:56 What makes you say that mifsit?

In your brief experiences maybe! i drive often 500-1000 miles a day covering every inch of the uk including scotland. Sheffield is no different to anywhere else, although some areas are better than others, north wales being one of the better. And i take it by having white van man up your arse you are holding him up,maybe you should consider these are usually capable drivers, working people trying to earn a living,to feed their families often with many miles in front of them, without the privilage of having all day to shag up the flow of traffic on their way to browse asda without any thought for anyone but themselfs.

Well if he's a capable driver what's he doing tailgating someone?

Definately getting worse. I must see at least 20 people everyday weaving all over the road when on a phone... no chance of ever getting caught.
I think that the law with regards to everything except speeding has been relaxed to such an extent that things you would consider bad practice (cutting people up, undertaking, driving dangerously) stand no chance of a conviction.
The people who drive poorly only seem to survive because propper drivers are able to spot them and avoid collisions. The poor drivers have no clue how many times they've nearly died, and seemingly don't care!
I feel this is a direct result of the concentration on camera's/speed/revenue.. and the total lack of any rescources to spot dangerous/drunk/**** drivers.

Oh at last, someone tries to justify driving up your back end.
Well you can't justify it, hun. Driving too close to someone else's car is unsafe, inconsiderate and not particulalry bright.
Those who do this are in fact proving themsleves less than capable drivers, and a danger to others on the road.
They are being rude and inconsiderate and totally thoughtless of the other people working hard for their families and hoping to get home without having to extricate the vehicle of an impatient, short tempered idiot from their boot.
They are also showing an impatience and lack of control that suggests an anger management course should be looming in their future.
If as you say they also have such a poor and misinformed opinion of the others around them, it is not really surprising that they are so incapable of driving like reasonable human beings...which is pitiable, not to say pathetic in the extreme.
Oooh, that feels better. :D

'Irony' not a part of your vocab. then?

Well she's got a good point whatever experience or qualification she's speaking on.
Funny how buses are getting smaller and not carrying as many passengers as they used to. Also, the advertising and company livery seems to be disappearing as well. And the drivers don't seem to wear uniforms anymore. And they don't stop at bus stops either.
Oh sorry I thought anyone who used a bus lane must be a bus!
Should rename them to Bus Unless-You're-In-A-Bit-Of-A-Rush-Then-You-Can-Just-Cut-In-And-Annoy-Everyone-Else-Patiently-Queuing Lanes...

Oh sorry I thought anyone who used a bus lane must be a bus! :lol:Driving in a bus lane isn't a matter of competance, it's just people risking breaking a law which is designed to encourage people to use the bus by making the roads clearer for them. It isn't dangerous though.
It seems our cars are becoming our castles and when one is in them one is always right and can do what one wants. One's journey is always more important than other's similar to our rights and beliefs. Others drive worse than us and its always their fault...until it snows!!!
Lord Deckard 17-05-2007, 18:36 The M1 roundabouts near Meadowhall truly are an experience for the brave during rush hour.
lazyherbert 17-05-2007, 18:55 Have a trip to Paris & there you will see manics on the road. We were told that if you have an accident on the Arc De Triomphe roundabout your insurance will not cover you. I`m glad I do not have a car.

I've been driving for 16 years...I'm guessing my driving instructor is retired by now, thank you for asking about him. He was lovely. Taught me to drive with patience and consideration for others.
Or From being inconsiderate, enjoying having a mile long que of cars behind you,who are guilty of having things to do and wanting to make progress?
Did I mention poor and misinformed opinions already? Ah yes. This is what is called proving my point. Thank you.
I too tend to drive my car to get from point A to point B. I too have things to do and people to see. I tend, however, to do it with consideration and patience wherever possible, particularly as I am aware that i am driving a large and potentially fatal hunk of metal. I am guessing from your defensive tone you don't.
But its ok,you can type cast them while it happens theres the vans, the bmw's.........
I'm not sure what your point is here, but I am not typecasting vans and BMWs if that's what you think. I am however making comment on the behaviour of people who wield their vehicles like a weapon and attempt to bully everyone else on the road at risk of harming themselves and others.
