My supervisor has just been phoned by his girlfriend who claims it's snowing in sheffield. i didn't manage to find out where abouts though.

I wonder if a couple of flakes of snow will cause the same trouble as last year.

you know things are interesting when u talk about the weather! ohh it smells like snow!! i can feel it on my bones!:hihi:

Andy78

Snow is interesting in sheffield as one flake will cause complete mayhem! no buses, trams or trains, and people will all rush out to the shops to bulk buy bread and cheese. Total gridlock!

Ha ha, I'm in hallam and even though it's quite clearly not snowing here, loads of staff have just decided to leave work early just in case. This is exactly what happened last time, everyone left work early, which made the city come to a halt. Idiots!

Argh! I need to get a bus home down ecclesall road. looks like i'll have to walk and get wet. I hate stupid people! (see previous post).

Please, everyone who is working, don't panic and leave work at the normal time. We are not going to get snowed in.

Thats the problem though, if they left an hour or so ago, it'd be fine, but by leaving at this time, they'll clog up the roads. Between now and 5, it'll just get worse and worse.

Traffic Roads Chaos on the Streets of Sheffield.

Yes, on the Roads Of Sheffield the mere rumour of snow has caused multiple incidents of thoroughfare madness.

Cars skidding into trees, dents, swearing bus drivers (no change there then), abandoned vehicles. Idiots in 4WD cars thinking they're in a Land Rover.

Don't forget your woolly underpants, a thermos of hot sweet tea, some Hob Nobs, a spade, a primus stove, and a length of hose pipe to use a snorkel in case you get snowed into your car.

Will this madness ever stop?

Not fair! I think I may stay in work till 6 and let the traffic die down.

I've just been outside and I can confirm that it's raining here. Now that means there is a chance of drowning, I suggest that we all go crazy and run for the hills. if you see a tree, climb it and live in the branches. Take lots of survival equipment like torches, flares, spam and a tent. Quick go before it's too late!

As someone on one rainy cold sunday afternoon, who went for a drive to ringinglow to keep my 1 and 3 year olds quiet. As the rain turned to snow just before the Norfolk arms and I subsequently rolled off the road, landing upside down writing my car off in the process - Remember it is incredibly dangerous driving in the merest hint of snow and freezing weather. Btw I was doing 10 miles an hour at the time.

The forecast for this evening is for it to get worse before it gets better. Expect a covering by the morning!

Hey it is proper snow out there!

I got home from work more or less on time, amazingly, from Derby to Bradway. 17:10 Midland Mainline train from Derby got to Sheffield on time at 17:48, then the TM Travel 293 bus left town at 18:10 and despite having to get through worse than normal traffic in town and on Abbeydale Road reached Bradway at 18:40, only 5 minutes late.

The roads were clear of the white stuff until half way up Hutcliffe Wood Road, approaching Beauchief, where the bus had to slow down and drive carefully.

But the combination of an old double decker bus and a good driver meant we didn't have any kind of incidents!

Nice Christmasy scene in the upstairs front window of the bus - caked in snow, which had berries and leaves mixed in from the overhanging tree branches that the bus had driven through!

Seen any gritters yet- I haven't. We've had 2 days warning of the snow and yet we have been caught out again. Why are we surprised when it snows in winter?

The way the town empties at the first sight of snow shows that no-one is Sheffield has confidence in the Council to keep the roads clear.

The major roads were clear earlier, so the gritters must have done a daytime run, and I guess they will be out again tonight.

Someone has seen gritters, as there is (or was) a thread further down called something like 'gritters out allready!'.

Anyway, often you find the problems are not caused so much by the council not gritting as one or two drivers with a lack of commonsense stopping where they shouldn't or driving inappropriatly, or making unneccesarry journeys, knackering things up for everyone else. And remember once the traffic gets gridlocked the gritters are stuck with everyone else!

You cannot grit when it rains because the rain will wash the salt away. It been raining all morning and most of this afternoon. It would have been money poured down the drain if they had gritted at any time during the past 2 days.

it look me 50 minutes to get from the flats across the way from waitrose up to the university football pitches in broomhill setting off at 5.40 earlier, it was gridlocked all the way up pretty much. When I set it off it was snowing but not settling and by the end of the journey there was a good inch or two everywhere. I think that's the quickest I've seen snow in Sheffield come on and stick in the last 9 years that I've been here. The football pitches were unplayable too so i didn't even get a game of footie! :( Then had to drive for another half hour to get back to banner cross.

It took my mate 5 hours to get back to Manchester, he got through the snake just before they closed it but the road down to glossop was too treacherous so he had to take some ridiculous detour.

Int snow great?!

Morning campers..... its very cold this am - the roads don't seem to have been touched overnight - which is nice - last nights snow seems to have melted and then re-frozen into ridges on the road - should be fun going down the hill - if you see me coming don't expect me to stop :)

Hopefully the bus routes's will be clear though if I make it down the hill.

Walkey here.....snow on the ground and frozen solid.

At about 7am this morning there was the most amazing crunching noise from outside and it was a very small car going very gingerly over the ice-ridges form last nights snow and slush.

Most entertaining - slowest I've seen cars go down my street all year!

Seriously, watch it out there - a day for good boots with treads.

The roads seemed to be empty this morning. The bus to work only took 10 mins when it usually takes 30 mins. It was great! Actually, is it a public holiday or something? I didn't seem to see anyone out and about this morning, and I appear to be the only one in work. curious

Bad drivers is what caused all the gridlock and long journeys. Suddenly when it snows people suddenly think it is OK to stop in the middle of the road, block junctions, drive into bus gates etc.

Nothing to do with gritting...

we were all at work in Meadowhall last night and we wanted loads of snow so we could behave like teenagers and have a snow fight.

Imagine our disappointment when we went out with rubbish and there was rain.

Please lets have some proper snow this year.

Does anyone else feel that bus companies are too quick to stop some buses when there is snow?

Last night the 82 to Stannington stopped at Malin Bridge despite the fact that Stannington Road was totally clear and cars were traveling up and down it normally.

I feel they give up to easily.

It's where the 'Five Weirs Walk' goes under [old] Wicker railway bridge.

Yeah, I just found that with Google, how do I get to it, walk down the path at the side of the Hotel Bristol towards the Wicker arches ?

Yes, or there is another way in between the old station building (now a cartridge refill place) and the furniture shop next door.

I know, bus service is terrible in stannington

Standing there for ages, I'm sure I was getting frostbite on my toes waiting for the dam bus.

Thankfully I wasn't late for my theory test, which I passed
