View Full Version : Buses. Not a moan.

I see a lot of negative stuff posted about Sheffield's public transport so when I found myself without the use of my car for a couple of days I was imagining being confined to the house rather than face the expected horrors of catching a bus anywhere. But I needed to nip into town so I bit the bullet, and was pleasantly surprised. It was all very easy and convenient, buses showed up within moments and delivered me to my destinations swiftly, and their drivers were friendly and helpful. Maybe some routes are a better experience than others, but I just wanted to say cheers to the 88 and 83

Yea stagecoach have pretty nice drivers. PLUS they aint nearly as expensive (Well at least they wernt a few months ago). If the buses were cheaper id use them more, its ridiculous how much they cost. I don't know how they can blame it on fuel costs etc when its 3 quid in Manchester for a weekly saver on stagecoach buses.

I too use the 83 and sometimes the 88 stagecoach buses. The drivers on there are much more friendlier and helpful then the ones on First. And, more importantly to me, they are all now low floor easy excess buses and brilliant for people who have prams to struggle with. Big thumbs up to stagecoach (especially for the 83!)

Can this thread please be deleted? I thought it was against forum rules to be complimentary about bus services?:hihi: :hihi: :hihi:

And yes....I'm guilty of it!

I don't drive so I appreciate my buses, especially the 83 and 88. Thank goodness for the bus lane on Ecclesall Road.
The problem is with the odd driver who is obviously having a bad day!

How can all the drivers of one company be surly, miserable and grumpy and not at the other? Is that specified in the job application form?

I actually don't have many problems with First buses and drivers. I catch them nearly every day. They do have a crappy job, I'd be mardy if I had to drive a big smelly thing round all day, 100's of members of the general public getting on and off, all different shapes and sizes. Some passengers insult the driver, some smell like tramps, the driver has to touch everyones hands when handling money. Just think of all the germs and bugs the driver picks up every day.

Drivers! I feel for you!

Then why be a bus driver in the first place? People that work in shops have to handle money every day, as do many other professions and they manage to be polite (well, most of them!). Maybe as I live on such a bad route where the service is complete rubbish and the drivers are downright ignorant it sways my opinion slightly.
The other posts are complimentary so they cant all be bad I guess.

Having caught buses in London for a few years, I think Sheffield bus drivers are absolutely lovely :D

You're right there KatieB! I was in London for 2 years and they are murderous down there. Mind you - the schoolkids are actually quieter than in Sheffield. Maybe it's fear!

I walk from Woodseats into the city centre unless it's raining. 76 has always been fine for me, tho the prices are a tad silly really. Gone are the days of 10p anywhere in Sheffield...I think it was 10p...with the creme and brown colour scheme of the buses...

I too must say thanks to the 88. It gets me to work and back every day and it's lovely not to have to change in town.
I agree most of the drivers are smashing.

Not bad to sat that 90% of the stagecoach drivers for stagecoach sheffield, are sacked first employees! i have seen quite a number of them on the 83/88 routes already, and would not even risk putting any of my money near them, not all stagecoach sheffield drivers are like this, but you have to remeber most of them, if not all did once work for first, as you are not going to work somewhere what as longer hours for a lower wage are you, unless you are daft! Im talking stagecoach sheffield £6.90 an hour, first mainline £8.90 this is based on new bus drivers.

Trust me i bet you will have seen nearly all of stagecoach sheffield drivers once driving stagecoach sheffield buses, myself being an ex first employee and now working for stagecoach rotherham.

The 80 number buses have always been frequent. I still remember them as a kid catching from Middlewood and into town. There's at least three to four 8X buses running the same stretch of road from one end of town to the other.

52 is also another frequent one. It's just a nightmare for those who live outside of these lines. i.e Crystal Peaks

This is a good thread for me to thank the First Bus no.25 driver yesterday morning at about 7am :D He saw me waiting to cross the very busy Chesterfield Road as he drove down, stopped to let me cross, then waited at the bus stop for me !!!! I was VERY surprised and very grateful ! Thankyou Mister Driver :D

Yes that is very true, allthough i work for stagecoach now (Rotherham Depot) i can assure you i am not a sacked employee of first though, as i have worked at first, and since moving house to sheffield, i may be applying at olive grove to get back into first.
