View Full Version : Empty Grit Bins, who to contact?
Good old Sheffield Council!
I got home from work today and decided I should grit the path outside my house and around my car (near a corner and other cars liable to slip and hit my car).
Off I went to the grit bin nearby with my bucket and spade! It was empty, well, except for rubbish that is!
Then I went to another, and another, and finally another, walking a good mile round trip to these bins in the pouring snow.
Evey one of them was completely devoid of grit but full of crap!
They clearly haven't been touched since last winter!
So I went home cold, wet, and very annoyed!
What's wrong with the council! They've had a whole year to fill these things back up but choose to leave residents without instead.
Does anyone know who I should complain to at the council (which dapertment and a phone number) to get these things filled up?

We might as well not have them either as there's nothing in them!
Sam Miguel 18-11-2004, 19:31 I'm going to say, since when have grit bins actually contained grit?
Not in my time they haven't. Household rubbish, twigs, old, odd shoes and the occasional dead body, but grit?
No way.
The ones in Bradway have always normally had grit in. Cannot tell you the current status though!
Draggletail 19-11-2004, 18:53 Happy to reply the Greystones ones have grit, don't know how we would get by without them on our gradient!
Sam Miguel 19-11-2004, 20:11 But why have we not got a readily available grit supply (in a grit bin or not) here on Myrtle Road? Being one of the steepest hills in Sheffield, we surely deserve this meek gesture by the council.
But hang on: this is only Heeley.
Get my drift.

If you think this is a Heeley specific problem have you asked your local councillor to take the issue up?
Hi
You may find the following page of interest - it outlines the numbers of new salt bins installed each year and the way they decide who gets them [see especially Appendix 1]
http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/index.asp?pgid=21024
Hope this helps in your quest and you get a bin in Autumn 2005 ???
Rudi
Sam Miguel 19-11-2004, 20:35 It's not a problem specific to Heeley, but a problem specific to similar inner city areas which are on the same low priority list as my darling little adopted area.
It's not just grit-bins, you understand, it's the general maintenence of these thriving little communities that leaves a lot to be desired.
Compain? What is the point?
Anyway: I don't want a posh Heeley.

Yes, but someone should say something, rather than expecting someone else to do it. Perhaps the council think that if the residents don't care about their community and surroundings, why should they? Or perhaps the council just aren't aware that there are any problems to rectify?
And who do you think has a higher priority then?
Draggletail 24-02-2005, 13:55 Just sussed out (due to our empty grit bin) the actual number to call to get grit bins refilled is: 2726444

It's a good job they were full of rubbish or they'd have blown away in the recent gales. ;)
But seriously, you or Sam Miguel ought to contact the council, it's just not fair that they dump all that "Household rubbish, twigs, old, odd shoes and the occasional dead body" in the bins instead of grit. I mean, it's not like your neighbours would have put it there is it, and why should any of you mention the fact they're empty, someone else can make that phone call can't they, why should you bother, when your spending so much constructive time on here informing us of these devastating effects on your lives.
Anyway, I think the council's rubbish, I ran out of petrol the other day, why didn't anybody tell me I had to put more in the bl**dy car!
I'm voting for somebody else next time (well, I will if I can be bothered to vote).
:D
