Does anyone know where i could take a digital camera to be repaired or looked at? It got very wet during a sea trip and stopped working. I think its pretty much defunct but would like a second opinion before it heads to the bin!

Thanks in advance.

Avoid Jessops.

There's a camera store just off The Moor, near the old Theft Converters place. Can't remember what it's called, but they look quite good (I have no actual experience though).

If your camera is knackered, and tbh it sounds like it will be (fresh water's one thing, salt water another), your memory card may well be fine - keep hold of it until you can determine either way. It may be of use in any replacement camera you buy. One of my SD cards has been through the wash twice and is still OK.

Salt water will corrode the insides of your camera like nobots business...its probably knackered.

Hey Nooka

Try Harrison Cameras at the city end of London Road.

They're a traditional camera shop. They do repairs on standard (old fashioned) equipment , so you never know. Good luck.

Hi Nookah,
I have been on holiday so this might be too late,I found it on a Photo forum.
Someone else had the same problem with salt water. He removed all batteries and cards, put the camera in a bucket of running tap water and left it for a couple of hours. Then put the camera somewhere to dry naturally (an airing cupboard?) and left it for a few days. He put fresh batteries and card in and hey presto success ! He did not say how expensive his camera was,not to be recommended under normal circumstances but ???.
Of course most people use it as an excuse to buy the latest model.
Good Luck.

Check your house / travel insurance to see if either covers you for accidental damage. If the camera is worth more than the excess, it may be worth it!

I would second that, Harrisons are very good. They do have loads of digital stuff though.

Have you tried the obvious things like cleaning all your battery terminals and contacts, does your battery door close tightly ?Do you have a mains lead, will it work like that? What sort of camera is it ? A guy in Oz has posted full instructions and pictures on dismantling Fuji 6900's and others.

For digital cameras, unless it is a very high end digital SLR, either it should still be in warantee or it will be cheaper to buy a new one.

The new one will also have the advantage of being better quality :)

Just a quick tip do not take your camera to bits, who would believe a six volt camera can give you such a shock and that was with the batteries out. SHOCKING 8)

Does anyone know where I canget a camera repaired in Sheffield? I've just taken my Olympus digital camera which has a broken battery cover to Jessops - apparently it will cost £40 to send it to Portugal to be looked at, and will take a minimum of 6 weeks. Don't really want to be that long without it and I wondered if there was anywhere that actually repaired them on site rather than send them away.
Thanks!

Good place with good advice! I took a digital camera with a worn-out switch in there once, and the man told me the shop could send it to Canon for repair, but it would probably be cheaper to get it done myself directly by H Lehmann in Stoke, which does a lot of Canon repair anyway.

It's not 6v in the flash capacitor, it's between about 200 and 400, depending on the camera. That's what will have got you.
