Does anyone here recall the former Kentucky Fried Chicken shop in Firth Park, which I believe is presently a Southern Fried Chicken establishment?

I used to go there every Monday evening between c. 1978 and the end of 1979 as the proprieters (or rather franchees) were relatives of our neighbours, the Patels. They came to England in 1976 and left in February 1980. Anant and Illa ran the shop around this time and my father, brother and myself used to visit once a week to enjoy free KFC (as we were good friends).

I just wondered if anyone remembers eating from KFC around 1978/1979 from Firth Park. Did you work there? Did you visit often, have any problems etc? Do you remember Anant and Illa?

Finally, I recall visiting the nearby sweetshop to buy Monster Munch crisps and they seemed huge compared to the fiddle little things you get nowadays. Also, the Job Centre on the corner had card after card displayed in its windows offering jobs to all and sundry - seemed there was a lot of all and sundry back then!

 I used to live on Crowland Road and the Kentucky shop was an absolute treat to us as kids. Mum asked what I'd like to do one birthday and I asked to have a big take out of Kentucky, which I got. The coating was fabulous it doesn't taste the same now.
And I also think the Monster Munch crisps have shrunk to half the size, surely this isn't just the fact our fingers have grown bigger.

I remember that birthday Chez, yes, KC chicken has a taste better than so called Southern fried sold at other outlets, must be the coating which is thier unique recipe.
Shame that Firth Park has lost so much of it's original identity.

Remember it well, used to be a late night must, today there are to many takeaway food outlets for any one to stand out.

It was part owned by Dr Patel of Southey Green Surgery, both owners got prosecuted for handling stolen goods!!!!!
on a saturday night, I would have a KFC & the rest of the familly would have a chineese from next door, it was "carryout heaven" back then, or was it just the novelty factor???

Bharet Patel owns the franchise for Kfc in sheffield and other parts of the region. Is this any relation? I no he started out with the one on Middlewood Road at hillsborough more than 20 yrs ago.

Not sure, although I have had dealings with Bharet, not sure if he's related.

Dr Patel used to be my neighbour when we lived in Ranmoor.

Anant and Illa came to live at his house in 1976. Anant was studying to be a doctor so I presume he and Illa took on the KFC franchise at Firth Park to earn a living. I met (a) Bharat on a number of occasions so I presume he is now the guy running the whole regional franchise? I also recall Poppat running a take-away on the Wicker (though my older brother may know more about this than I do: I was only 8 or 9).

In the days when my father and brother regularly visited, the whole KFC range was superior to what it is now. The coating on the chicken was much nicer; they did spare ribs which left your fingers red for the rest of the week (I do wish they'd make those again) and you could buy hot apple pie (that was akin to putting molten lava in your mouth if you didn't let it cool). They also sold Alpine fizzy drinks.

I used to help make up KFC boxes which came flat-packed. It was a matter of shaping them into a box and inserting a greaseproof lining. Then you added napkin, salt and pepper and probably plastic knife and fork/spoon. You can imagine how soon I tired of making these on a Saturday morning aged nine or ten!!!

Nice memories.
