Yes a strange question but can they?.

The missus has just been informed that the Administrater/Owner of a forum she uses has installed software that will allow him to look at member's browser page.
He states that this is to check what members are searching for, to stop them cheating in a competition.

I think it is just a bit of scare-mongering but it looks as though it has back fired as it looks as though members are now queing to exit.

No, definitely not true. They can read all your PM's etc though ;)

Software does exist to look at what's displayed on a PC screen and it's frequently used for training, customer support, etc. but requires software to be installed on the client PC as well as at the remote end.

Your concerns are groundless - if your browser went through a proxy server run by the Administrator of the site in question tehn he could look at web traffic, but that's not going to be the case unless you're VERY intimate with the Admin.! :)

He's pulling people's legs.

Yep he's having a laugh unless he's managed to get a trojan on to all his users pc's.

he could be monitoring which pages people are looking at though, but there's nothing 'visible' that isn't there to anyone who browses to that page.

Only if they installed a modification to allow them. On this software you can't view user's PMs or passwords. The former because of the lack of feature and the latter because they are done through one-way encryption.

I don't believe this is true. Geoff maybe able to see certain statistics about PM's but the software does not allow him to read users PMs. Private Messages are just that - 'Private'. I assume they are encrypted in some way.

Besides, I'm sure he has more useful and interesting things to be doing with his time.

That would only be within the site he's Sysadmin of, unless his users are going through his site as some sort of proxy?

Ahhh...apologies....I read it as referring to searching and basically saw 'Search Engines'!

Quick update:
After loosing several members, the Admin has now had to send an email to every member explaining his reasons for telling 'porkies'.
I doubt he will ever try this stunt again:nono:;)
