On going to work yesterday evening, I was having a conversation on times children finish school.

When I went we did not finish school until 3.45pm, why was school open for longer when I went and did we learn more without knowing it.

I went to school in Bolton Lancashire and I went to junior school from 8.45am until 3.30pm and at senior school from 8.50am until 3.45pm.
We had 1 hour for dinner break which is longer than they have now.

What times where your school hours ? Do you think school`s should have a longer day.l

When I was at Brafield from 1998-2003 it changed quite a bit but not drastically.

In my first few years it was something like 8:55 (for registration) till 3:10

In my later years it changed to 8:45 to 3:05. Don't know why  maybe Mr Bird fancied a change

I don't think that I needed a longer day, it was long enough at the time lol.

Do you think they should have longer hours rosie?

btw I believe there's another thread similar to this lying about

I am sure if there is a similar thread a moderator will sort it out for me to merge the two.

I liked the long hours as I always managed to have good lessons and not try and fit everything into 40 minute lessons when quite a bit of time is taken with registeration. I think it`s good to have a full day at school and a longer dinner hour. My son gets 35 minutes how can they digest food and cue up to get it within 35 minutes.

In fact I don`t know if they have each lesson registration anymore. We did and it helped with truency.

Primary 0855 - 1515
Secondary 0850 - 1540

I think going to school 5 days a week totally killed my enthusiasm for learning eventually.
I think ideally school should be 3 days a week (from a learning point of view)
I guess one of the aims of school is to get the little terrors off the street in the daytime though.

1985 -1991 primary school 9am till 3.30pm

1991 - 1996 secondary school 9am till 3.30pm

lessons half an hour each - thought that was standard!!!

they've changed things a lot over the years. some new way of thinking. think they should concentrate on getting the kids to turn up!!

Most of my school life was 9 while 3.30.

Although I think back in the Rivelin Juniors days in the early 80s I used to go till 4.

My son is in primary school and goes from 8:50 till 3:20 with just over an hour for lunch.

Daughter at senior school from 8:40 till 3:05.

Anyone remeber that song we used to sing at infant school .....

"At half past three we go home for tea, or maybe at a quarter to four.................."

When I lived in Germany there hours were till 1.30pm and then home for the day and they went on Saturday mornings as well.

Disipline was better than schools over here and they seemed to enjoy lessons.
Perhaps we should take a leaf out of their book and change times and days.

"At half past three we go home for tea, or maybe at quarter to four,
And ten pairs of feet go running down the street, and in at their own front door.
So it's rough and tumble, rattle and noise,
Mother and father, girls and boys,
Baby in the carrycot, cat by the stove,
A little bit of quarrel and a lot more love."

We had a different system.

First school (Age 4 - 9) 9.00-3.30
Middle School (Age 9 -13) 9.00- 3.30
High School (Age 13 - 16 (Or 18 ) ) 9.00-3.30

Still only learnt French, English and Art. Hated it.

I was the only person in the history of the school to be expelled fron 6th form.
I'm not proud but it was funny

I am sure long days cause behavioural problems in the aftrnoon, all the fizzy drinks and e numbers. Went to Italy and thier day was 8-1.30. No real difference between the Italian students and UK students in terms of behaviour or motivation.

In the afternoon many of the older students had work placements. The pay wasn't too hot for teachers and many of them had to take on a second job. I guess early finished would cause childcare issues over here.

I despised science! Cos Mr Lyons the science teacher was a complete git! I also hated the subject and couldn't really see the point in it, also why is it compulsory at GCSE level?! :loopy:

I went to Myers 81-86. I think it was 08.55 until 3.55 with 3 breaks, x 2 ten mins morning and afternoon and one hour for lunch.

King Teds 1954-59 - finished at 4.10. Before that I think Lydgate Juniors finished at 3.30 but its a fair while ago and it may have been 4 pm.

Primary - 9 - 3.30, with 15 minute breaks morning and afternoon, plus one hour for dinner.

Secondary - 8.50 - 3.30, with 15 minute breaks morning and afternoon and one hour 10 minutes for dinner.

I don't know how kids get on with these silly short dinner breaks, there's no time to eat properly, socialise (which is important), play the instruments in the music block, play football, do a bit of homework or have a club or activity, which is something we did loads of at secondary. We used to run our own clubs in all kinds of things. We even ran our own dinner time discos (20p to get in) on Fridays with 6th formers doing the DJ-ing. The library was open all dinner time too, the music block and you could use the sports hall for games.

The same at Nether Edge....with 'Assembly' at 8:50. There was a prefect on the gate in the morning, - taking the names of stragglers. You could sneak in via the shrubbery if you were late but it was double detention if you were spotted. :hihi:
