View Full Version : What makes a great bar?
E-Man Groovin 17-11-2004, 10:13 A recent thread has got me thinking and I fancy kicking off an finding out what people think makes a good bar or pub..
Is it the quality of women or men? Is it the music? The choice of drinks? The price of drinks? Ability to talk? Banging loud music?
So many factors! I'm guessing there'll be a range of opinions. Also, please list your top three bars... I'll kick it off:
1. Wig and Pen
2. Trippets
3. Menzells
Don't think Sheff is overly blessed with bars...
I agree with aforementioned, also suggest for a number of different reasons Dulo and The Bath Hotel plus Showrooms is open til 2 and does really really nice vodka and orange.
Could we not all chip in and open a bar? Seriously I may still be a bit drunk... but I reckon we could make it work.

I like bars that:
- Are quite dark, funky, with a nice atmosphere
- Play decent music that is loud, but not too loud that you can't talk
- Have comfortable seating (sofa's always go down well in my book
- Don't have sticky floors
- Aren't over crowded
- Have friendly, well dressed people (people that make half an effort)
- Last but not least, sell cheap drinks/cocktails
Being in a decent location always helps
I have a million ideas for when I own a bar..
Have I missed anything?
Cocktails good....
also mention The Earl of Arundle....

A difficult question as what kind of bar you want varies according to mood but I guess the following are important to me:
> Decent quality drinks, including real ale
> Good, efficient service (hate waiting ages to get served)
> Comfortable and clean surroundings
> Serviceable toilets
> Good atmosphere
> Clientele - nice people
> Reasonable prices
> Somewhere you can feel comfortable whether drinking or eating. Hate bars where casual drinkers are squeezed out for diners. It's a bar not a restaurant. On the other hand if you go for a meal you don't want to be crowded in or smoked on.
On a weekend I would also like good uplifting music and other times I would add availability of good, freshly cooked food.
somewhere you can get away with skinning up in ...
muddycoffee 18-11-2004, 20:02 I would like a bar/pub with partitions in like in the old days all pubs were. And the bar in the corridor. This way you can have different stuff in each room. YOu can have a loud jukebox or Dj in one room, and in the other rooms you can still hear it but you can talk. Also what's wrong with carpets. Carpets make the acoustics of a room much much better. Any music sounds warm and not harsh, and there's less reverb. The worst acoustics I ever heard was at the brown street bar, where they had a massive wall of windows on one side and live bands playing. They sounded like they were playing in a fish tank the reverb was so bad.
One room for smoking instead of one room for non smoking.!
A roaring fire is great in winter. And a nice terrace is great in summer. I would like them to ristrict any tv to one end or one room, as I think it ruines the atmos, and draws your eye all the time when they put them in all the upper corners. The juke box should be like the one in the Vine, and the barstaff nice friendly people, who aren't just massive fat beer monsters who pour drinks holding the top of the glass where your mouth goes. I don't want too many tables as it stops the rotation of conversation in a larger groups. And finally I don't want all sort of crazy irrelevant crap on the walls from the firkin factory, some local historical photos can be quite interesting
Insanity 22-11-2004, 20:18 Dove and Rainbow , more rock than Brighton pier.....and full of metal/punk dudes!
also the leopard print seating and purple walls deserve a mention! \m/
depends on the time of day. Sometimes you want somewhere quiet and comfy to sit and talk and sometimes the music and atmosphere are more important.
You missed live music off your poll list, so I didn't vote.
Loud music, good atmosphere, no dress code, no chart music/rnb/rock/live bands, no people who are so drunk they are falling over and places that don't get too rammed so a drink can be got from the bar without having to wrestle your way there.
Normally avoid places with cheap drinks as that always attracts the 'binge drinkers' (IMO ppl who can't control their drink over a night).
Plus no roudy football fans (although I like football I hate those 'fans' who think it's cool to act like pricks and after a few drinks get the guts to hit the smallest bloke in the bar).
Somewhere like Muse, last friday the bouncers stopped people going in after it was reasonably full (one-in-one-out when I got there), the music was quality and almosphere good.
