Who will be the first local heroes to be honoured in Sheffield’s new ‘hall of fame’ in the city centre? A new ‘hall of fame’ to celebrate Sheffield’s heroes has been given the go-ahead by the City Council.
_
Believed to be the first of its kind in this country, Sheffield Legends will be an opportunity to honour Sheffield’s heroes from various walks of life - from the arts to science and from sport to industry. They will have a special plaque set into the pavement ‘Hollywood Boulevard-style’ - believed to be the first of its kind in this country. Those honoured will be invited for an ‘unveiling’ ceremony outside the magnificent Victorian Town Hall in the heart of the city early next year.
_
Members of the public will be invited to nominate their Sheffield Legends and say why they should be given this honour, then an independent Selection Board will be given the task of choosing up to 10 winners for the first year. In future years only one award will be given annually.
_
Leader of the Council, Jan Wilson commented: "This is an award to honour those individuals and groups who have brought recognition to Sheffield at national or international level. We hope the plaques in the city centre will eventually become another important tourist attraction for Sheffield and visitors will realise just how much the city has contributed to so much of our country’s heritage and culture.
_
"In addition to the plaques in the prime city centre location, the Sheffield Legends will have a dedicated section on our web site to give full details of their achievements and to raise awareness of the awards."
_
Those eligible for the awards will either have to be born in Sheffield or have a very strong association with the city and must have achieved recognition at national or preferably at international level. Nominees will be required to write a short note to say why their choice should receive the honour. All the nominations will be considered by the Selection Board in the New Year and it is hoped to be able to announce the first ‘Sheffield Legends’ by mid-February.
_
Nominations may be sent to Councillor Michael Pye, Lord Mayor, Sheffield City Council at the Town Hall, Pinstone Street, Sheffield S1 2HH by post clearly marked ‘Sheffield Legends’ or by e-mail the Lord Mayor_by 31 December 2004. Remember to include between 20 and 50 words to say why you think your nomination should receive the honour.
_
Potential nominees for the awards include Michael Palin, Seb Coe, Sean Bean, Joe Cocker, Dr Barnes Wallace, Donald Pleasance, Jarvis Cocker and from the world of sport, England cricket captain Michael Vaughan, boxer Prince Nazeem, England World Cup winning goalkeeper Gordon Banks and world superbikes champion James Toseland.
