View Full Version : What's going on in Ecclesall?
Hi everyone,
I am a first year student at Sheffield University and have been given the area of Ecclesall to find some stories for my coursework. I have a few stories but I need more. I was wondering if anyone knew of anything interesting going on in the area? I would be really grateful if you could send me a personal message or just respond to this thread.
Thanks in advance.
what sort of story?
old ones or stuff thats going on now?
Are you going to be one of those students that asks for our help then disappears without acnowledging our help or are you going to get stuck into the forum and do the 'give and take' thing? ;)

Happens quite often, dosen't it ?
Oh look - they've gone offline
They were still here when I posted :suspect:

Well I'll certainly acknowledge any help that I recieve and be very grateful for it.
As for what kind of stories, I mean anything which happens that would normally make it into the paper or anything of interest or concern to people who live in Ecclesall. Any thing at all would be great.
Thanks.
Has Ecclesall ever been in the news?
What other sources are you looking at for news?
Have you checked out the council website?
and the south yorkshire police one?

We were only waiting to see if this was going to be a dead end like so many others K :(
I think this (http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/index.asp?pgid=80900) is as interesting as Ecclesall gets dpokane

Well, that doesn't reflect the posts I removed. I think it's best to get back to topic now.
Thanks.

Can someone investigate the disappearance of t020?
Thanks Strix.
I do try to look at these websites regularly but sometimes miss things- like this page. If you come across or hear of anything else please let me know.
Thanks very much.
There's the Sheffield Marathon next weekend which comes along Ecclesall Road, would that count?

I'll certainly look into it. Thanks
Alastair 12-05-2007, 13:42 The only thing going on in Ecclesall is the huge amount of infill development in grounds of the old Victorian mansions. The council kicked it all of with the demolition of the old library and erection of the less than lovely monster swiss chalet.
Hey guys. Sorry to bother you again but I was just wondering if any one knew of any going on in Eccesall on bank holiday monday that might be interesting?
If anything at all comes to mind pleases mention it.
Thanks a lot.
duckweed 26-05-2007, 21:42 Have you tried the history and expats forum?
dulcet69 26-05-2007, 21:59 Know it doesnt sound very exciting but you could mention about the Cafe in the park (Endcliffe) at Ecclesall in danger of being taken over - it was rubbish a few years ago then the chap who took over has made it absolutely brill for families and just going to enjoy a coffee with friends. The lease is now up for grabs and its a wonder he will be able to hold on to it as every tom, dick and harry wants it now they know hes turned it around into something great. He has done all the hard work and got a loyal customer base and now it could be taken off him by someone who thinks they can make pots of money. Why dont you take a wander down there and have a chat with him and some of the customers - it could make a really good local news worthy report. Anyway just a thought.
carcrash 26-05-2007, 22:09 Peace in the park is happening next weekend in Endcliffe Park. http://www.peaceinthepark.org.uk/
Tartempion 26-05-2007, 22:14 Isn't Ecclesall Road in a completely different place from Ecclesall? Or is that Ecclesfield I'm thinking of... hmm...
Ecclesall church has first class concerts every month. I saw Julian Loyd Webber there a few months back. Maybe too highbrow for you.
Look in the listings pages of The Sheffield Telegraph for anything going on.

Yeah that sounds pretty good. I'm not orginally from Sheffield so I'm a bit geographically ignorant but I'm guessing the park is the one just off Ecclesall Road? Also, do you know the opening times of the cafe?
Thanks.

Have you not got even the most basic research skills? Haven't you got yourself a map of the area? You're obviously on the internet, I don't understand why you can't find these things out yourself? A few seconds on google will give you your answers. I know that will seem harsh and people will think I'm being somehow unfair, but for heaven's sake, you're supposed to be a University student!
And I sincerely hope you're not an English or Journalism student, looking at the mistakes in your post.

Wow. Sorry I didn't realise a few spelling mistakes in a hastily written post between revision could be so annoying to you. What I don't understand is why you feel the need to comment on this thread. I said in the opening post that I required some help and most people have been more than happy to oblige. I do have a map of the area and was 99% per cent sure that was the right park but I just wanted to make myself 100% sure(obviously this is terrible journalism?). If you have nothing constructive to say, why say anything?

I've grown up in Ecclesall all my life and it's really not the most happening place. It's full of great houses but the most 'gossip' you'll get would be at or around the schools. Residents tend to either be successful couples, older people or people who have quite a bit of 'dolla'.
You could talk about the house prices round here as they're incredibly inflated lol

That is quite an unkind post they are only asking for a bit of help have you never asked for any help ever?
I do find it very annoying as well when people constantly moan about spelling grammar etc so what if not every one is perfect.

Thanks for helping. I think I might have all the stories I need now. I appreciate the suggestions. :)

Glad to see the forum has helped you :)
Hope to see you getting even more involved here in the coming weeks.
crookesey 29-05-2007, 12:13 Things might be different now but in my younger days when Ecclesall Road was my favourite stamping ground it attracted folk from all parts of the city that had tired of the city centre. I used to call in the Nursery Tavern most nights and always found always someone to have a beer and a chat with, I even met my wife there some 32 years ago.
To me in the 1970's it was a magical place, I truly hope that it still is. (I don't mean the now ruined Nursery, just the area)
