I dont know which everyone else prefers but I really enjoy going to UGC now, it's big, spacious and feels like a proper cinema. The only downside is that it gets really messy with popcorn and litter and they need to have people either on the doors or checking every so often because the other day 2 little brats sneaked in from another film and were putting everyone else off!

I used to go to Warner Bros in Meadowhall but being quite tall it was an uncomfortable experience. The Showroom is ok i suppose.

Does anybody remember the ABC? It used to be where the Argos is on Snig Hill now, I remember waiting in the tunnel outside in a mile long queue to watch my very first film 'Superman'. This bloke used to walk up and down checking to see if no-one underage was trying to sneak in!!:hihi:

If only the queue checking worked at UGC.

Before people could just walk into the screens without paying!

Then they noticed and did something about but it's still pretty easy to go into a different screen to the one you've paid for (so other people tell me

I have to go to UGC though, it's the best in Sheffield by far but it is a bit pricey, especially the refreshments. I never buy any food or drink when I'm there. Can't afford it! :P

The Showroom, better variety of screenings, hosts other functions ..... erm...

Oh of course, it has a BAR!

In the premier screen at UGC you used to be able to have a drink in there didn't you?

I think there was a bar in the back room and you could take a pint/whatever into the cinema with you....

Another vote for the Showroom. Free of chavs (see recent posting on chavs in cinemas), the people who staff it are actually interested in film, reasonable prices for drinks & snacks and you don't have to wade through popcorn to get to your seat.
Oh.....the films are better as well.

Anyone remember The Anvil (under the Grosvenor Hotel). Interesting idea - run by the coucil under the guidance of a real film expert / enthusiast. They used to cut out all the adverts and other dross from the showreel. They showed non mainstream films - accepting they couldn't compete with the big cinemas showing blockbusters.

Hi Nuf_said
The showroom is the new Anvil. I think it was set up by the council and shows minority and foreign language films. I've been a couple of times and it is a gem of a place.

The place in meadowhall is sometimes absolutely freezing.

The odeon I've found to be a bit of a mess recently, but it's a city centre commercial blockbuster cinema, what you'd expect really.

The ABC was a wonderful place, but it wasn't the Argos. It was where the hotel/music shop is now. Does anyone have a picture of It that isn't from a book (i.e. taken by yourself or someone you know?) Because I despirately want one for the page about the ABC on my lost cinemas of sheffield website :-

http://www.rocknroll.f9.co.uk/cinemas/gone3.html

There are lots of facts and figs on this page about the Fab old ABC if anyone's interested.

But what would be the point? Prices are the same across all screens anyway aren't they?

The only problem with The Showroom is that it is pretty comfortable if you are above a certain height. The main reason I like UGC is that you have proper leg room, and the incline of the seats is such that someone sitting in front of you rarely obstructs your view.

That's if you're so sad that you have the time to watch two films at the cinema in one day :P

Actually, my record is 5 in one day! I decided to take the day off work and spend it watching films non-stop, sloth like. It was great therapy! I've not been able to find the time to do this again though, which is a shame.

I had some involvement with the Anvil before it was shut because the council couldn't put up with Dave Godin (who ran the place) getting up their collective nose. I thought the Showroom replaced the niche the Anvil had but didn't know the council ran it like you say. Can't be cos it's successful!
Also had some involvement with the ABC when it was demolished to make way for a giant shopping centre development which actually never happened. I'll see if I have any photos. I can recall most of the building including the clever screen, the gold side curtains which are in a local school now!, the manager's office with exit padlocks hanging on electric switches to enable the public alarm to function, the space under the main seat slope which had spy holes into ...errr better not say, the carpets from the main auditorium went to a dance school. The shops at ground floor included Kitchen Creation and Barclays Bank (?) on the side street.
Is the cinema website your baby?

Especially if you get to see your film in the old 'Premier' screens (19 & 20). MASSIVE chairs with variable recline, and you stretch your legs out fully from any of the seats. The best way to see a film.

Me and my g/f have the Unlimited subscription cos we see a film a week on average.

What the ****? Went to see KINKY BOOTS at Odeon in town and the sound was so muddy and awful it was painful.... all fingernails on blackboard type mid range and no bass or top.......commented to one of the 'usherettes' but all she could do was giggle and say it sounded ok. It sounded like a very cheap amp working flat out fed through 2" speakers with holes in.....AWFUL!! The entire right hand side vanished for 5 minutes at one point and then came back with more harmonic distortion than an 80's ghetto blaster in the Peace Gardens on max volume....

...........if that was Dolby digital then I am a cheese toastie....

How much does it cost to go see a film

It costs me about £6.90 for evening and about £5.50 in the day. The cinemas near me are about the same price

i did 4 films in one day and i try and see how many i can fit into one day. i luv having movie marathon days at the UGC and i agree if you can get into the Premier Screens they are fantastic!! the trick is to wait until the film is on its last week of showing then go and see it and more than likely it will be in the Premier Screen. UGC evrytime for me. its close, nice atmosphere, spacious and i have no problem with people i usually ,by fault, manage to see a movie at a time when chavs dont go so im lucky not to have had a bad experience.

UGC is the best in Sheffield.

What's the point in going to see a movie in some pokey little place with a screen smaller than your telly (Meadowhall, this means YOU!)

UCI at Crystal Peaks was sometimes OK. But they had an annoying habbit of cutting the edges off films to fit on their squarer screens. When I suggested they show the full width picture and don't use the full height of the screen, they just looked at me like I'd asked them to explain the theory of relativity!

The Odeon 7 (Known us as the Odious 7) was always rubbish. If you don't think the sound is rubbish, then you really ARE a cheese toastie! Very expensive and cramped too.

I've heard of the Showroom but never been. I'm not into all these arty foreign films.

What I would love to see is a restorred 1930s cinema, with ONE huge screen showing the latest blockbuster each week.

Showroom v UGC

UGC (Cineworld now actually!) has improved with its film choice over the last 12 mths or so.

Used to go to the Showroom quite a lot; mainly because of bad experiences with idiots and popcorn etc but the Cineworld Unlimited is hard to beat finacially - but i always waste the money saved on crap from the kiosks- doh! I'm the model on which they based the viability of cheap seats in the cinema.

It's also more forgiving for disorganised and random visits in terms of film choice.

Showroom does score higher on the diversity of choice away from the mainstream, and I generally like the more 'cultured' experience (apart from less space for long legged people like me and small screens...although i always forget about screen size after 5 mins)

Used to love the ABC; my dad used to take me every wednesday night - days of the trailer/ 'b' movie, not that I particularly enjoyed them - although it heightened the anticipation of the main film...Towering Inferno etc

Mr Relative, you may be interested in my whinge on the UGC, Don Valley. (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12341&perpage=15&highlight=cinema&pagenumber=1)

On a positive note, it means we can have £10 cinema sessions down here, and when we move, we'll be right near an ex-UGC!!

Whilst on holiday last year - we watched 'War of the Worlds' in the open air on a huge screen - very civilised but totally inpractical for the UK :)
