not many free ones im afraid unless you count the rivers and canals etc and they may be part of a club, marshalls pond at riverlin is fishing well, go past the admiral rodney and turn left .

also another pond that way i cant remember the name, heading towards the admiral rodney take the first left after the wisewood inn, its part of the old canal .

there is another one out in dungerowrth/dungworth thats got some nice bream around 5lb in, all these fisheries cost though about a fiver for the day

i know pleanty more but the best fisheries all cost and are around the donny area.

Hillsborough park is free, some large carp, tench, plenty of roach and tench.Do not go in the school holidays. The one at Rivelin is earmarked by the council for a nature reserve with no fishing.Don't know if and when it will happen though.
Crookes Valley is free, but deeper than the Mariana trench.

thought hillsborough park got all the carp taken out about 2 years ago ? i maybe wrong but i read a story about something like that.

there were 7-8 around the 28lb mark if i remember right.

its got a horrible amount of leaves etc on the pond floor though, might be tough fishing but go for it , let us know how you get on.

you after big carp or coarse carp mate i may be able to help you some more if i know what type of fishermna you are . i know loads of places, some amazing places too .

my record is a 24lb common carp on the pole ;-D from a very unknown fishery

dont go to tinsley and fish or 40 policemen will arrest you for fishing without a licence and throw you in jail for a indefinite period

In all fairness jonny, if as a relative beginner you want a decent fishing venue with large carp (that you have any chance of catching), then you really need to go to a fishery, and pay. It'll be no more than a fiver. As mentioned elsewhere on the forum, there are huge carp in crookes valley (and tales of a monster catfish!), but catching them will be nigh on impossible - they are quite wise - last time i went down there i couldnt even tempt them with loose fed bread. Also, there is a small risk of agro from the local scrotes.

Around sheffield there are loads and loads of fisheries that will suit what you want. kjs at killamarsh, kjs at aston (lillies pond), westwood at high green, to name a few. Out of sheffield i would recommend the reed pond at Hallcroft (retford), Hayfield (Doncaster), and Higham fisheries (higham - between claycross and alfreton). Ive been fishing about 5 years and still class myself as a novice, but have had a couple of 100lb+ bags from the last 3 venues i mentioned

All the best

kjs fisheries is a good place , its on station lane , lots of fish in their 4 ponds.

few more round there that they own , one is on boilie lane thats is good too , plus split ponds at aston has a fair few fish in the 4-5 ponds.

there is a pond of herries road that costs £30 for the year but its not great but cheap , one or 2 big fish but very rarely caught. but i think you have to live locally or know someone who is a member, go and ask though as they are nice enough fella's and will tell you if your interested.

if you want any around the donny area and you have a car let me know and i will give you more info

im sure im forgetting a few too at the moment

Make sure you got a fishing license there is a thread on here saying police are going mob handed arresting and detaining people for long periods of time who havent got them. Must be serious! but if your car int taxed or tested and happens to be nicked they will be cool wi that, just make sure you got a fishing license!! Crookes valley used to be r8 good although its bottomless. Some big carp in there plenty of roach and perch just fish off the ledge about 8 to 10 metres out loose feeding regularly to keep a steady stream of bait going in and you will see the roach some big uns too come in taking the feed on the drop. You gotta fish light tho cos the water is clear and the roach are quite clever. For fish that is.

Never seen police checking licenses in Hillsborough park, but environment seem to be doing regular checks.Yes it is all free at the moment,so it should be, after all we pay council tax + rod licence and have to put up with kids and duck feeders.Herries rd is £28 for the first year and £8 after that,500 members and about 40 pegs. There is a catchment area to join.

Derbyshire Lane, Sheffield, South Yorkshire
2 ponds, free fishing, night fishing allowed.
Holds Carp 12lbs, Perch 4lbs, some pike.

It's not free but Kiveton Hall Farm holds plenty of carp and match weights have been recorded ar well over 100lb. It's a bit "peggy" so get there early and fish to the island on the lower pond if poss.

To second what bsd said, KJS is stuffed full of stockies and some larger carp. Same can be said of Clowne which also has a good head of tench and silver fish.

Match at Royston this weekend - Will need a large haul to win that one :(

As long as you aren't one of the littering, fish killing bozos that have occasionally fished our pond at Frecheville, you'd be welcome to try your luck here. Oh, and as long as you accept that the pond is there for everyone - including KIDS, DOG WALKERS AND DUCK FEEDERS, you should get on well with the locals.
Remember to try not to look too irritated when walkers would prefer to pass in the normal way, rather than being forced to limbo under your rod/pole or hurdle over it. If you bring your dog keep an eye on where he might deposit his calling cards and pick it up - (bins supplied).
Bare in mind that it is you who is benefitting from the local groups who regularly clear the pond of bundles of fishing line, float packets, hook bags, pop bottles, sandwich wrappers, crisp bags, etc etc etc - not all of which is left by the local kids, as hard done to fishermen would like us to believe.

P.S. Perhaps Ducatiboy and Matsellah would like to pop along and be the 'lookout' in case an Environment Agency bailiff turns up.
However, I think that they will find that MOST anglers would not require their services; as MOST anglers are decent law abiding folk who are fully aware of the necessity to maintain and police our waterways, and the cost incurred therein. Or perhaps they don't mind the scumbags who take substantial amounts of live fish out of ponds and sell them on to private concerns.
And why does the council still expect me to pay for my own holidays when I'm paying all of this council tax?

Superdyke jumps in again.
I have no intention of being a lookout for anyone nor would I warn anyone if I knew they were about.

If you are going to say things like this you can expect people to 'jump in'.

You might also find that most anglers like having other people enjoying the ponds etc - so don't presume that everyone is like you; and for those who DON'T like kids playing around ponds - tough sh*t.

I think you'll find that the rod licence works out to around 50p per week. Why that constitutes extortion I don't really know - especially if you take into account the amount of work they do re maintenance, stocking, monitoring for aquatic diseases etc.

:QUOTE:/ MATSALLEH:

Superdike,
You seem to have a problem with everything I post, where have I ever a said a rod licence was extortion? The bit about objecting to paying was about having to pay for public parks as was well documented in the wiremill dam thread.
If that's what turns you on,feel free to carry on. :QUOTE:

OOOOH WHAT TANGLED WEBS WE WEAVE; Eh Mattsalleh?
Why you felt the need to P.M. me your infantile rant (as above), I don't really know. Anyway, I thought I'd copy it here so that my reply is understood by all.

And don't flatter yourself by implying that I've got some kind of special, albeit negative, relationship with you.
I debate points on S.F. And as many folk here know, I hold no grudges.
Just because I might agree with your point this week doesn't mean that I'll agree with your point next week. And vice versa.
'Extortion' may not have been the exact word you used but you were saying that 'because we pay council tax it's a liberty that they should expect us to pay for fishing licences' AS WELL.

You accused me of 'jumping in' - I see, - anything you don't like the sound of, or disagree with, is 'jumping in' is it?
It was you who started with the insults when I was merely making some valid and pertinent points that any newcomer to angling should be made aware of.

One such point being, - that all anglers should be aware that other people are perfectly entitled to walk around ponds and to let their children/dogs play there also. You made it very clear that you think otherwise, as sadly many, but by no means all, anglers think.

P.S. I am a man so that calling me a 'dyke' is a little bit silly - do try to use your imagination if you feel the need to insult me - I'm sure you can do better.
