Yeah, I tend to buy those Cream compilation sets because I heard a song I like on the advert for it, but I can't remember the name of the track.

I once bought a coral album for the single dreaming of you.

Not a brill album.... :(

Sometimes you get lucky though, I bought the Jet album 'Get Born' on the strength of the song Are You Gonna Be My Girl, it's a great album

I've bought loads of albums and singles blind without hearing anything off them . This is either to do with the label they're on or sometimes just to do with the look of something. Often it comes up trumps.

The internet has eradicated the need for this…but hey, it was fun. There's quite a lot of stuff I'm into that I may never have heard if I hadn't gone with instinct.

Of course if yr in a decent record shop you can always ask to listen to something and skip thru' the tracks.

I used to do this all the time, before the invention of the internet and BBC6, and discovered some fantastic music e.g. the Pixies, Portishead, Mansun, Radiohead ... even U2 in the early 80s.

And, Ianmitchell, we also bought the Jet cd on the strength of that single, and I was disappointed with it! Can't please everyone.:D

lol that's very true.

Are You Gonna Be My Girl is a great song.

The album (Get Born) itself, in my view, has 4 songs that aren't really noticeable (i.e. that you'd like to skip track)

The rest is easily listenable with tracks like Rollover D.J., Cold Hard Bitch and Lazy Gun to standing out

I am so comign from the other direction on that. That song lead me to believe that Jet were a very average to poor band, who thought they could write a good song based on one riff. But when I heard some of the album I was pleasantly surprised. (I still don't think they are that good mind)

I don't normally buy albums after hearing one single. I usually like to hear a couple of songs by the band/artist before buying the album. Unless they're one of the many bands whose music I already like in which case I buy their new albums as soon as they come out.

However, I did buy Papa Roach's "Infest" album after only hearing the single "Last Resort". I love the album so I did OK there!

I think that buying the singles is a bit of a rip off which is why I wait to see if I like anymore of the band/artists songs and then decide whether to buy the album or not. I prefer getting more songs for my money!

I do this all the time, i think it is better value for a full cd than the single price and i usually find another couple that grow on me after hearing them a few times.

Of course it is...

go to www.winmx.com or Limewire - Google it. Or if you don't want your IP address revealed go to a newsgroup (NewsLeecher)... the only thing that is stopping you is a CD Buner - which can be picked up for around 25 quid

Agree - that's a fantastic album and the second one was good but not as great.

I think it depends what you liked the one song for.

If you thought it was original sounding, and you thought the musicianship was high quality, yes, go ahead and buy the album.

If you just thought it was a bit catchy, then probably a good idea to get a bit more evidence before buying the album.
