View Full Version : Condoleezza Rice to be named secretary of state
Anyone with even a passing interest in the workings of the US government will understand the importance of such an appointment...
"Condoleezza Rice is first and foremost a loyal Bush acolyte, almost part of the family, and will be far less likely than Mr Powell to argue against presidential instinct."
"Fiercely loyal to the Bush family, in the immediate aftermath of September 11 she asked senior staff at the national security council to think seriously about "how do you capitalise on these opportunities" in order to change US foreign policy. "
Goodbye world ;)
Cue REM and their US Hit ' The End of the World '
The key question is.. Does she like Blair :suspect: No one in the UK does :help:
Well, at least she has lots of experience.... running oil companies. We'll find out if that thing about 'if women ruled the world there'd be no wars' has any truth.

Nah... none of them ruled the world... just small parts of it. :D
Phanerothyme 17-11-2004, 00:18 Well, I expect Hilary Clinton will run in 2008. Probably against Condy Rice, in which case we are stuffed, and so is Hilary.
She's a heavyweight intellectual and not really a neo-con in the PNAC sense. So all may not be lost. In some ways, I feel a bit safer, with Rumsfeld & Ashcroft (I mean VOLTRON!) out, and Rice snuggling up ever closer to the president - perhaps her intellect will win out? Who knows?
She looked very uncomfortable on TV last night when Mr Bush babbled on about her "spreading freedom through the world" and how she had seen segregation and racism, then compared her to the first secretary of state (can't remember his name) someone who had slaves.

The thought that Condolleeza Rice might now be the Republicans choice for President in 2008 just struck me last night.
It was a very scary thought - before then I was convinced that Hillary Clinton would have the presidency in the bag. With Condy, as you say, she's got a major fight on her hands. (As things stand at the moment - but I guess 4 years is a very long time in politics!)
As a black woman, she may well take a goodly share of the traditional Democrat vote - absolutely inspired thinking by the Republicans if this proves correct.

She's a hardcore christian too. If I remember correctly, the term fundamentalist was coined to describe christians like her and Bush.
Condoleezza Rice in Essence Magazine
"When I'm concerned about something, I figure out a plan of action, and then I give it to God," she told Essence magazine earlier this year. "I just ask to be carried through it. God's never failed me yet."
from Harpers
an apocalyptic Christian preacher named Jack Van Impe claimed that he had been contacted by Condoleezza Rice, who he said asked him for an outline of what the end of the world will be like
Books of Timothy, Revelations anyone?
I really don't think Condoleezza Rice will get on the ticket in 2008. It would be one thing to put a woman up for president (As i think the democrats will get Hilary on the short list next time), but not a black woman... I really don't think that America is ready for that, let alone the republican party.
noseyrosie 17-11-2004, 13:12 Can anyone tell me a bit about her and why, specifically, she is such a bad choice for a governmental minister?
Yodameister 17-11-2004, 13:16 Bush wanted her in that job from the start of his presidency. Perhaps he thought putting someone who was a big noise in the oil industry in charge of foreign policy and then invading Afghanistan to enable building an oil pipeline and Iraq to free up a large supply of oil to the US market might be a little bit too obvious even for them.

I sincerely hope you're right, but I have my doubts.
