We are going away Friday to Monday soon and wondered if I need to get someone to look after my hamster or it's ok to leave him for 3 days? Obviously I would leave food and water.

No animal should really be left unattended longer than an overnight stay, even if you do manage to leave enough water for 3 nights, it won't be fresh and will probably have grown a nice bacterial colony by the Monday.

He wll be fine, leave him a few bog roll tubes to chew on and a full water bottle.

Strictly speaking, no animal should be left unattended under the new animal rights bill. If you can get somebody to check on him or take him in whilst you are away, it would be much better and he should have access to fresh food and water. I'd be happy to babysit here at S11 but you'd probably not want him to be eyed up by my 5 cats.

Thanks for the offer, i'm in S11 too, but as you say, not sure about the cats!! The book I got from the pet shop said I could leave him,but I was a bit worried, so I'll see which of my friends fancies a visitor!

Might be better- I can't see him getting into any mischief in that short time but wouldn't you just hate it if something happened when he's on his own. Fortunately, caged critters are a lot easier to find temporary babysitters for-just hope he's not an escapologist!

I hope you find someone to watch him, food can go funny and the water need changing everyday really. Plus there is the chance of escape, never say never! I'd look after him for you but I think i'm a bit far away. I always find someone to have our hamster :)

I would say dont leave the hamster for the reasons mentioned, but also take account that if he had an injury or became ill, he would be suffering until you got back.

Thanks everyone. I found a fab place at Woodseats(or rather my husband did!) which is like a small animal kennel, costs 1.50 a day, and they look after your pet really well. I thought that was better than all my friends who have cats, or my friend that said she'd put him in the garage.........:o
