Were you there at the same time as they filmed Threads? Heh heh!!!

I went to hillsborough, and I knew lots of people who went to wisewood. Our road straddled the catchment areas. The wisewood lot were told all sorts of nasty stuff about chaucer, and that how privilaged they were to go to such a good school. And lots of parents went to a great deal of trouble to get their kids in to wisewood.

I can't compare because I never attended wisewood but Iwent in the place on a couple of occasions for concerts, and was quite surprised how small it was.

The chief advantage for going to Chaucer, was that after a few years the truency rates soared. There were only 8 out of 30 in our form in the 4th year. This meant very good pupil teacher ratios. And I did quite well there. It was quite rough in the lower school but fantastic in the upper school 4th & 5th year.

Small World indeedy, just answered your post in another thread Muddycoffee.

I went to :
87-93 - Wisewood "Comprehensive"
pre 87 - Hillsborough Middle

Between Chaucer and Wisewood.. Wisewood was a better choice, even though my sister went to Chaucer for some reason. Hm... Wisewood was strong in sports, I remember, but not all that 'clean' a school. I remember school myths about Myers Grove's kids coming to hit on us with nails hammered into planks ! LOL... I never saw any of these after school fights of course, cos I was a goody-two shoes. But yeh... this thread sure brings back memories.

Loved it at Hillsborough Middle. My fav teachers were Mrs Mee, and Miss Lunney (?). =)

Yeah I remember setting off to Wisewood from Myers with my plank of wood....

We were dead hard at Myers, ya know...? :heyhey:

Yeah!!!!!

Remember the old Myers vs Wisewood rivalry very well. I met a guy some years ago (friend of the other halfs friend). We'd been talking for a while and found out what school we went to. As one, we chorused "alright, outside now!!!!"

Hi Bago, yes I had Miss Lunny. Her first name was Zoe. She was a funny old bird. One summer she had us all in the yard singing to cliff richard's summer holiday, which somehow she'd persuaded me to pinch from my mum's record collection.
They used to call her funny lunny!

I had Mrs alison in M4, Mrs Cockburn in M2? and Funny Lunny in M1 And a strange little woman who looked like cleopatra in M3 [miss shannon ta boroughgal!]. I was the bell monitor, and used to ring the bells you know! in that class. I'll never forget in the M3 class someone was sick on the floor, and Teacher(i'll remember her name soon) asked if anyone wanted to volunteer to clean it up, and one of the girls actually voluteered and cleaned it! She couldn't believe her luck.

Hillsborough Middle was a lovely school. :)
I must have been there around 1978 - 1982

Dead hard ? Ha. We're so strong at netball and rounders that we would've scared u guys off with our bats a-n-y way. =P

I had Mrs Mee in M1, and then Miss Lunney in M2, Mrs Alison in M3 ? Then Mr Lloyd in M4 (new guy back then, but very strict). Miss Lunney used to pick her nose behind the movable blackboard, and we used caught her at it. Things you still remember, eh ?

Mrs Cockburn was the piano/singing teacher, right ? She used to make us sing hymns in the mornings. Which reminds me... do people remember those blue "Come and Praise" hymn books in their junior schools ?

Yeh, Hillsborough Middle School was a lovely place for a kid. When it used to snow really heavily up to our knees, they used to let us play across the road in Hillsborough Park. It was bliss ! Snowball fights, and all that. =)

I had Mrs Alison, Miss Yeardley, Miss Shannon, and, God bless him, Mr Gadd. He was a right laugh. He died some years ago though.

We had Mr Hughes as well, as head teacher before that other one started- his name escapes me.

It WAS a lovely school, and there never seemed to be any evidence of bullying, even though there were all sorts of people that went there.

I'm dying to ask if I know you all, but I'm suspecting we were all in different years

Yeh, I was thinking that too. Such a small world to find someone who went to the same school as you, (or maybe not so in this case) !

That new headteacher must've been Mr Bell. I think that was his name. No, I don't think u guys know me, since we went to that school in diff years... but i might know Bulldog who started this thread tho ! How come he's not replied again ?

Well as BoroughGal knows, I went to Hillsborough School too!! I was there between about 73 - 79 ish (crap with dates sorry)

I remember Miss Lunny very well as I was in her class. I still see her around now, pushing her shopping trolly up and down Hawthrone Road in Hillsborough!

I can rememebe Mr Gadd, Mrs Malander (sp) Mrs Shannon.

Can anyone remember Mrs Porter the head teacher in the infants? She always wore awfull bright pink lipstick and wrinkled her nose up to push her glasses up her face!!

I remember going back to school after the Christmas holidays when it was a very bad winter, to find the staff had built an igloo in the school yard!! It was so cool and we all turns going in it.

I liked it there, it was a pretty good school.

I left and went to Myers Grove (it was a good school then!!) I went straight into the 2nd year as Hillsborough was a Middle School not a Junior School so you stayed an extra year there.

remeber the pets corridor and when the bell rang at play time...the first ring was where we had to stand still like statues then the second ring walked to our line...or was that just the infants??....i could go on and on.......

Hi I went to Hillsborough leaving in 1981 to go to Wisewood. My dad was one of the parents who refused to let me go to Chaucer, going as far as to say he would keep me out of school rather than send me there!
I too remember Miss Yeardley and how she used to smack the back of your hand. I had cousins at the same school who were very naughty and she used to punish me too for being related to them!!! I also remember a teacher who was so lovely that when she went off sick I cried then when I left school I used to go back and visit her, I can't remember her name and feel awful, if you do please tell! She was an infant teacher and taught in the prefab not the main building.
I also remember the pets corridor and was a pet monitor looking after Cocoa the hamster and Blossom the canary!
Hillsborough was a fantastic school and I loved going there, Wisewood was ok though I have some very happy memories, especially the camping trips to the Yorkshire Dales!

Hiya Funkypants - welcome to the Forum...

I guess we might know some of the same people too, I had quite a few friends that went from Hillsborough to Wisewood, although I think you might be a couple of years older than me.

Joined Hillsborough in M2 mrs Cockburns class, she used to smack you on the back of the hand. Remember at home time we would sing old uncle tom cobley and ging gang goolie.

M3 Mr Ennis, new hard teacher, when the headteacher was out he was the one who smacked kids on the ar$£. Big barnsley fc fan now an MP. married another teacher, cant remember her name.

M4 Mr Plowse then Mr Gadd, Mr Fowler the head retired then Mr Hughes came. Mr Butcher was around as well. Used to play in the school football team and love going to swfc gym for pe.

1981 off to chaucer happy days
