im looking for a 3 teir hoping i can get one teir as a sponge as my partner is not keen on fruit cake lol not too expensive as we are working on a buget
can anyone help
If you're on a really tight budget, you could try buying pre-iced 'celebration cakes' from somewhere such as Marks & Spencer and then go to Hobbycraft at Meadowhall retail park for the decorations and accessories then you can make it exactly how you want it.
Hypnolady 23-02-2007, 16:39 My friend makes wedding cakes. It all depends on your budget and what you are wanting. All her cakes are made to your own specifications and delivered to your reception on the day. If you want to have a look at her website it's http://www.cakesbyemma.co.uk you will probably be able to get cakes cheaper but you have to bear in mind you may not get the same quality as that which is handmade by a chef with 20 odd years experience.
Emma will be at the wedding fayre at the McDonalds Hotel in Sheffield on 10th and 11th March if you want to see a sample of her work on display.
:) I make wedding cakes and celebration cakes of all types. Wide range - will try & get some photos on if I can. When is it for, what size and shape. 2 fruit & 1 sponge? Do not despair
Why Not Buy Ready Made From Marks And Spencer Then Get Some Flowers Made For The Top To Decorate????

Try Jan on Spa View Road at Hackenthorpe. Fantastic cakes at extremely reasonable prices. She recently made a wedding cake for me (twas a pressie for someone) in the shape of a pond with the bride and groom sitting at the side. He in his overalls and she in her nurses uniform complete with big boobies! :) It was brilliant, the bride and groom loved it and it was a talking point all evening. PM me of you want more details :)
The Cake Booth at Darnall are absolutely fantastic. They bake the most fantastic tasting cakes and the decor has real imagination. website is a bit pants, but you get the idea: http://www.cakebooth.co.uk/

wedding will hopefully be around sept or oct time if you can give me some prices ill get back to you
Dont you think you get what you pay for? Would you want packet mix cake for your wedding? You may as well go to asda if you do, at least if you buy it from asda you are only paying packet mix price, there are plenty of cake decorators in sheffield charging hundreds for packet mix. Try before you buy I say!!!!!!!! If they wont give you a sample ask yourself why!!!!

We found this out when we were looking into ours.
We have found a lovely lady who makes cake #s who lives right at the top end of stannington. She is lovely and has a seperate kitchen in her own home. I could get the number if you like? She is very reasonable :)

hbofinger 23-04-2007, 09:08 Hi all
With the wedding just 3 weeks away today, we've decided we'd like to change our dessert. We're having a very very small wedding and are having a dinner party afterwards with parents only. We've decided against a cake, and are having pudding and cheeses instead.
But - we've decided we'd like to have a bit of wedding kitch and put a bride and groom on the top of our pudding. Does anyone know where you can buy them??
Thanks
rach2005 24-04-2007, 10:26 Not sure what its called but theres a cake shop down on the walkway above the market. They sell all this type of thing.
do you mean in castle market?
rach2005 27-04-2007, 10:10 yes, its on the gallery above
chickywiggle 27-04-2007, 16:50 hobbycraft - they're quite expensive but you'll keep it.
can anyone give me any suggestions on who to use, im looking to get a cake thats quite simple and contemporary.
i have no idea on cost either
who have you used..
**elle** 08-05-2007, 12:43 We're going to get ours from M&S and decorate it with flowers. You can get 3 tiers (I think it feeds about 60) for something like £50.
The Cake Booth is fantastic. They did our wedding cake and are doing my mother-in-laws cake on Saturday. Not only are their cakes beautiful, they taste absolutely divine (which in my opinion is just as important).
Talk to Louise, she's great!!
Website shows a few of their designs: http://www.cakebooth.co.uk/

twoshots 31-05-2007, 09:43 You can't argue with the M&S cakes. Taste really good and they're not expensive. Having seen the cost of some cakes this is by far the best value for money I've seen. You can buy them tomorrow if you want....
All you need to some decorations, we've got sugar butterflies from ebay to stick on. Should look fine and I intend to eat most of it anyway :hihi:

Thanks.

Yes! My Mum specialises in cake design and is often asked to replicate designs from magazines. She would be happy to meet up and show you her previous work and discuss your requirements. If you e-mail me (leeloudesigns@hotmail.com) with your contact details I'll get her to give you a call. :)
samlasota 26-01-2008, 23:34 go to m&s they do fantastic cakes at the fraction of the price! big congrats , hope your day is really special. x
cakelady 27-01-2008, 09:41 Hi
I design wedding cakes for my clients. Usually they are from ideas that they would like to incorporate into their design eg, colour themes, decoration from their wedding dress or flowers from their bouquets. All the sugar flowers I make and airbrush/ colour dust to match colour swatches, which are then handed to a trained florist for wiring so they are perfectly put together.
I only take one cake for one date as each one is delivered and set up at your venue by myself . I always think you will have enough to do the night before without worrying about fetching your cake!
I also have a range of cake stands which are always provided for use on the day and returned.I don't charge extra for the service of delivery & set up.
I have found also that through consultation my clients are only being offered 2 flavours of sponges & fruit & their choices are extremely limited as to what they are able to have?? I make 7 different flavours of sponge(to date) & fruit and you can have every tier a different flavour if you want to-goes down a treat catering for different guests! With also having been a chef for more than 16 years if a special dietery requirement is needed then I can cater for it.
I do have a website showing some of my most recent cakes from 2007 and also my work has been accepted in Wedding Cakes-a design source & My Dream Wedding Cake.
If you are interested then all my contact details are on www.CakesbyEmma.co.uk or pm me.
regards
Emma
Poppy'sMum 29-01-2008, 20:05 I have found a few websites and there is a cheese shop in Chesterfield that offer it as a service. I think what I was wondering was if anyone has had one how it went down with guests etc. If you were a wedding guest would this be a change or would you still want a piece of cake?
I can't decide if I like it or not:confused:
cakelady 29-01-2008, 20:43 Your welcome,
I have done them before on the buffets I used to do at the country house hotels I worked at. They do look stunning, especially if you pick the different colours of cheese and garnish them with bright coloured fruits. You could always have 1 tier of cake simply decorated alongside to either use as your cutting cake or to go along with the cheese. I don't know if other people do it but we've always eaten fruitcake along with a slice of cheese!!Weird?tastes lovely the sweet and savoury together.
The wedding cake source magazine I use when I go to see my clients had a little feature on them as unusual cakes and they do look good.
It's your wedding-you have what you want.
If I can help anymore just let me know
Emma
cakelady 29-01-2008, 22:23 The best way to describe it is like a stacked wedding cake with 3 or 4 'tiers' but instead of cake you use different truckles of cheese.Different sizes and colours and then you decorate it with colourful sliced fruit. I used to use farmhouse organic cheeses which have the best flavours and then make huge baskets of handmade cheese biscuits.
If you still can't picture it let me know and i'll scan the photo for you.
Emma

Poppy'sMum 30-01-2008, 15:57 We eat cheese and fruitcake too! It is a very nice combination which is why I'm contemplating having a wedding cake and a cheese cake:)
Poppy'sMum 30-01-2008, 16:02 My new idea (Emma please can you give me your profesional opinion) is having smaller cheese cakes as table centre pieces. Just using smaller truckles...but will it work?
We're having cheese wedding cake - getting married in August. We're using the Yorkshire Cheese Co - http://www.yorkshiredalescheese.co.uk/. Jane there is v helpful, tho obviously i can't comment on the finished product!! I love cheese and so does my partner. It's our day and we want cheese - so we're having it!! Luckily family and friends love it too.
Also had a thought re giant pork pies.......... http://www.wilsonsbutchers.co.uk/
..... or is that going too far????!!!!!!!!!
Tell him how much wedding cake costs that will probably make him change his mind, works for me lol.
honeyb35 30-01-2008, 20:25 lol out of interest how much does cheese cake cost? (I almost said cheesecake......and went to raid the freezer :hihi: )
I was quoted around £175 for cake for 70 people. This was a basic quote - we're thinking of a Caerphilly, boyfriend is Welsh, flavoured cheddar and a stilton and don't know exactly how much this will be. Still will work out cheaper than an actual cake.
I got the idea just browsing the internet and as soon as i saw a cheese cake i decided i had to have one. My boyfriend was nervous at first and said 'i'll have to get used to that idea', as did my parents, and his parents just laughed!! But given that i didn't want a cake in the first place (gonna feel a right fool cutting a cake in front of everyone), this was a perfect compromise. And let's face it - everyone will remember the wedding for it!
If you have a dessert you would normally follow this with cheese - so it makes sense to have a cheese cake rather than another dessert - that's my argument anyway!! We don't have room in the budget, but i'd love to serve port with it......!!
cakelady 30-01-2008, 23:18 Smaller ones would look nice the only thing I would think is you always use the full truckles so it's getting the different size variations of cheeses without doing any cutting on the edges or it looks 'chiselled' and spoils the effect.
You could find miniature ones for each table could end up costing rather more than one magnificent 4 tier one and a single tier normal cake.
I'm finding my clients are wanting something different more and more-not a copy of someone elses ideas.
You have what you want, be proud of it and enjoy your day and knickers to everyone else!!
Hope you find what your looking for.
Emma

KATIEB_23 20-02-2008, 11:59 Yep theres one at the Leopold Hotel - its from 11:30-5:30pm apparently.
rach0106 20-02-2008, 14:16 Hi everyone and thanks! I have just rung the Hilton and they do indeed have one on Sunday! Between 11 and 4 if anyone's interested!
KATIEB_23 20-02-2008, 14:53 Hi everyone and thanks! I have just rung the Hilton and they do indeed have one on Sunday! Between 11 and 4 if anyone's interested!Ooh I might try & swing by the Hilton as well as Leopold then!
rach0106 20-02-2008, 15:35 Apparently they'll be having a catwalk show too. The Hilton said it was going to be a good one!
littleblue 20-02-2008, 17:02 Am I the only person who is really hating having to go to these fayres and try to plan stuff? Its a blummin nightmare and putting me right off marriage.
KATIEB_23 25-02-2008, 13:00 Did anyone go to these? We went to both the Hilton one and the Leopold one.... what did you think?!
littleblue 25-02-2008, 13:01 I was going to but I've got tonsilitus :(
What were they like?
KATIEB_23 25-02-2008, 13:02 Am I the only person who is really hating having to go to these fayres and try to plan stuff? Its a blummin nightmare and putting me right off marriage.I LOVE organising parties but I can see why you're getting fed up - everything is SO expensive that you feel ripped off at every turn, which is pretty frustrating :(
rach0106 25-02-2008, 13:06 I went to the one at the hilton. The lady who is doing my hair and makeup was there so pleased about that, but other than that I wasn't particularly impressed. It was very small, I've been to better TBH.
My photographer has cancelled on me too. I thought I might find one there but they are just so expensive. x
KATIEB_23 25-02-2008, 13:12 I was going to but I've got tonsilitus :(
What were they like?We arrived just as the catwalk show had finished at the Hilton but all the 'models' were wandering around in the dresses so we still got to see them :) I liked seeing different styles on 'real' people rather than the supermodels in the catalogues.
It was smaller than the one we went to at Aston Hall - probably about 15 stalls with people trying to sell you stuff ranging from videographers, photographers, flowers, make-up, Hairstyling, Spa experiences, pretty chairs etc.
I got given a 'bride to be' sticker to wear which served at a giant bullseye target for everyone to come & pounce on me, fawning & fussing :gag:
The one at the Leopold was even smaller... although they were handing out very nice champagne and canapes ;) there were only a handfull of stalls there - one of which was Katie Peckett flowers (Eccy Rd) which I was interested in seeing because she has had lots of recommendadtions and is very contemporary.
All in all, I would have been disappointed if I had gone to a lot of effort to get there... they only warranted staying at each one for 20mins or so (although maybe thats just me)
KATIEB_23 25-02-2008, 13:17 I went to the one at the hilton. The lady who is doing my hair and makeup was there so pleased about that, but other than that I wasn't particularly impressed. It was very small, I've been to better TBH.
My photographer has cancelled on me too. I thought I might find one there but they are just so expensive. xI ran away from the scary hair & makeup ladies! :hihi: They looked like they were going to pounce on me with their tongs and sprays... :o
OH was impressed with the photographer - was it Stuart something? Fancy giant albums printed with some kind of metallic sheen... then he saw the price  nearly had a heart attack!!
littleblue 25-02-2008, 13:32 So I don't have to feel like I missed out then ;)
nathanlewis 25-02-2008, 14:15 by all accounts the one which my wife did was very busy indeed with loads of suppliers there but heyhoe stick to the big named hotels in town, for interest the one at the sitwell arms - renishaw was very busy as usual and well organised also this is a well established venue for wedding fairs, so dont forget next time The Sitwell Arms
rach0106 25-02-2008, 16:42 I ran away from the scary hair & makeup ladies! :hihi: They looked like they were going to pounce on me with their tongs and sprays... :o
OH was impressed with the photographer - was it Stuart something? Fancy giant albums printed with some kind of metallic sheen... then he saw the price  nearly had a heart attack!!
Aaaah yes I know the one you mean! Very impressive, but :o nearly fell on the floor when I looked at the price list lol!!
steviebex 26-02-2008, 20:20 Anyone know of any wedding fairs this weekend please?
Pookiness 05-04-2008, 22:39 Has anyone ever tried a cake from special occasions, Spa View Road? she quoted £150 which sounds too cheap....or is it just a very good deal?
The one that im looking for her first name is Allyson, we had a quote from her about 12 month ago and I wanted to phone her and book it now but I cant find any paperwork, I cant remember her surname and I cant find her on any listings :(
Allysons cakes are beautiful, and taste as good as they look!
I have her brochure in my shop, I will leave the number for her on here tomorrow!

you can cut costs without having to be a master baker ........ most supermarkets (and M&S) sell plain white iced cakes in small, med and large, my friend bought 3, bought a stand off ebay, cake topper and ribbon, it looked fab and a 3 tier cost £60 ... and it looked lovely
Sara1312 02-06-2008, 19:18 Thanks alot, that never even crossed my mind! I'll give it some thought and run it past the OH although Im sure it wont interest him that much
honeyb35 02-06-2008, 20:19 I was going to get the iced cakes cos I thought they looked lovely, but found someone off here who makes lovely cakes, including a budget one (fabcakes)
Hiya,
Have a look at our website and drop me a line, we can work to any budget and will take all the pain out of it for you!!
:)
Giraffe77 06-06-2008, 11:57 Can anybody help me? I am after a 'bride and groom' cake topper, not edible, but something that I can keep (happy for them to be made of plastic, or similar). Bride and groom must have dark hair. Not looking for anything made to order, as we are on a tight budget - do any supermarkets or department stores sell this? Or could anyone recommend a local Sheffield shop? Thank you!
Sara1312 06-06-2008, 14:04 Try Hobby Craft at Meadowhall retail park, I know they sell them but not sure about the hair colour.
Good Luck

louisbourg 14-06-2008, 20:41 hi there
just a bit of friendly advice :) you get what you pay for
please go and look at some work that the people you might be interested in have done , because what people SAY they can do and what they can ACTUALLY do , can be 2 different things
you don't want to be getting a cake you don't like , as this is a really important feature of your big day !!

honeyb35 06-08-2008, 13:17 What is everyones wedding cake going to look like? What kind of wedding topper / accessories are you having?
A lady called Rachel Edwards is making me mine. I found the picture in a magazine and sent it to her. It's 3 tier, square, all the tiers join in together if you get me. It's cream/ivory colour and has iced flowers all down one side. The bottom tier is fruit, the middle victoria sponge and the top lemon sponge.
Not having anything on the top like a bride and groom figure, personally I don't like them.
Brunette 08-08-2008, 18:08 We're having a square chocolate cake with scrolls all around the edge, from this lady:
http://www.tscakes.co.uk/gallery.htm (have a look at the chocolate gallery - fabulous cakes!!). She's lovely too, and her cake is just gorgeous!!
Im going to have three different cakes, Ill be getting a 3 tier stand off ebay and my nan is making a chocolate sponge cake and a fruit cake and my friend is gonna make a lemon sponge, i like nice simple things and didnt want to be spending a fortune on stuff like the cake so i could spend more on the honeymoon and whatnot
Mentalmomma 11-08-2008, 11:32 Ther's some lovely designs on this site: crumbs-cakes (with the w in front and couk at end) We really like the Blk & wht ones. Don't forget your dots int the right places too.
I'm going for a cupcake tower, there are some very good ones on this forum esp the ones by Vikj.
looby lou 28-08-2008, 09:47 cupcake towers look amazing, I like www.fancie.co.uk as well the designs are incredible
we had a cake that looked all grown up from a distance, but when you got close you could see the beagle on the top, and the easter bunnies dotted around the base of the lower tiers
Cake pic (http://s43.photobucket.com/albums/e393/SFStrix/SF%20misc/?action=view¤t=weddingcake.jpg)
I had 2 octagonal tiers, one of fruit cake, the other a really scrummy chocolate cake filled with a buttercream that's stable enough to be iced and stand in tiers and also had pieces of fresh strawberries and raspberries in (guess what I was doing the night before the wedding!) stood on top of each other. They were iced in plain white and tied up with a really big wire edged gold ribbon, like a big present.
I don't do frilly things and generally stay well clear of things that are ever described as 'cute' so all of the designs that I saw were just too busy. Since I had some wonderful recipes and my mum used to teach cake decoration I reckoned that paying someone else hundreds of pounds to do something that we could do perfectly well between the two of us was a bit of a waste.
stressed_mum 29-08-2008, 07:20 Mine was a 3 tier cake a la Tesco.com & decorated by my mums best mate using artificial flowers that matched my bouquet, very simple yet looked stunning,
Have a look
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=653622&id=630244479
stressed_mum 29-08-2008, 07:45 thank you Binty, the whole cake cost under £60 & that was including the stand!!
LizG2008 29-08-2008, 07:51 Rachel Edwards is making mine too. It is 3 layers but each layer is taller by about a half than normal so the cake looks tall and thin. She is iceing it all white with pretty swirls adn sparkles up the side. We are having a character creations topper on it (you send them a piccie of you and what you are wearing and they make little yous to go on the top.
Well i'm going all traditional and letting someone on here do my cake :o the one and only........THE_DADDY!!!
He's doing me a 3 tier cake in black/white/pink and i can have any design i want :D
Hi girls
if you are looking for a wedding cake for your wedding but you dont want a normal sponge or fruit cake, then my cousin makes unusual wedding cakes made from cheese
you can mix a layer of cheese with fruit cake, or you can have a cake made entirely of cheese. She can also wax it to match your colour scheme.
She does over 70 different types of cheese including unique blends like wensleydale with strawberries and cream, or wensleydale with baileys irish cream and fruit.
so if your interested in a unique twist on a traditional wedding cake then contact her and she can advise you of what she can do to help you.

LitleMermaid 29-08-2008, 10:19 If I ever get married, it's got to be one of those cheese cakes. It's my favouritest food in the world:love:
fabcakes 30-08-2008, 21:31 I'm having a round 3 tier with some embossing on but I'm a bit worried that I've gone off the idea of the design lol, I did choose snowflakes in gold and silver colours but I'm scared its going to look a bit 'busy' as I want a set of those personalised cake toppers on, and the colours wont match
hi honey if you have gone off the idea have a think what else you would like i can do the toppers to match dont stress !!!!!!!!! :hihi::rolleyes:
lol what worries me about the toppers as obviously its gonna be me in a red dress and not sure if it will be a bit too much with gold and silver!
I'm thinking really hard lol, its only that bit I'm worried about, the size and shape ect are perfect!
Hi - not going to try and flog you one as i'm sure you're sorted...! I did this and did the snowflakes in pale gold - and you are right, I'm thinking in plain white would look amazing and no worries about your topper?

looby lou 01-09-2008, 21:07 I love the one with white sugar roses and the organza ribbon
Thank you for the lovely comments : )
Have been asked to do some cakes for a mini wedding fayre at Freya off Eccy road on 18th September in the evening if anyone is around? Will be doing some mini cakes for general scoffing and am masterminding a lovely design for a large cake as we speak.....
We had a cupcake tower from Fancie, it was beautiful and very very yummy.
Spanna2005 12-09-2008, 22:49 Was yours the butterfly one?
Fancie are making my wedding cupcakes too. We're having a cupcake mountain with a cutting cake for the top.
There are going to be mini cupcakes with green frosting for the trees and I'll be making some fimo figures for the topper although I'm going to have to have a few practice runs to get them right!
Mentalmomma 18-09-2008, 16:06 Just wanted to pop this on here, as on the other Bride to be sites i've been on they are very popular.
Ikea are doing a 3 tier cup/Fairy Cake stand in chrome and clear glass for £10.99
Sainsburys are doing a lovely 2 tier (I think it was) in Baby blue with pastel pokadots for £18.
But St.Lukes Hospice shop in Chapeltown today had 3 different oldie worldie Cake stands for cup/Fairy cake in Pottery and Chrome for £3.99 -£4.99. They also had a couple of Glass cut cake stand for a lerge cake for a few pounds each. So Charity shops are worth a definate look if you are having the very populaf Cup cakes etc or a Tea Party Theme.

pink_diamond 27-11-2008, 09:08 Hi
Hope someone can help as this isn't strictly a wedding question (I haven't been asked yet :() but I didn't know where else to ask and thought there might be some cake experts here. It's my daughters christening in December and I have bought her a lovely cake topper but I have no cake! Ideally I'd like 2/3 layered circular white iced sponge cakes maybe one chocolate filled.
I was going to buy one of the plain wedding ones from M&S but they're fruit cake and I'd prefer sponge.
Does anyone know of anyone who can make them or anywhere I could buy them from?
Thanks
I thought M&S did both fruit and sponge... well they did when we looked at them for wedding cakes
pink_diamond 27-11-2008, 15:21 thanks I called M&S and they do sponge but it has to be ordered in and they can't order it because its so close to Christmas!
KATIEB_23 27-11-2008, 17:55 I think Adsa do them...
Also Costco do great value sponge cakes and will decorate them to order.
honeyb35 27-11-2008, 20:58 fabcakes makes them. I've never seen sponge ones in asda but apparently tesco do them too.

I make cake toppers and decorations for any cake, weddings, birthdays, anniversarys etc.
I can make a plain looking cake look stunning, so why pay out £100's for a fancy cake when you can personalise it with stunning crystal work for less then half the price.
check my site out at:
www.brideandbeauty.webs.com
I have a 7 tier cupcake stand to hire out, rates negotiable but would be a lot cheaper than hiring from a professional. If you are interested PM me and I will send you pics of what my wedding cakes looked like.

Try this women. Very helpful and good to give someone money who is passionate about cake making not some mass produced place
Def try Rachael Edwards:
http://www.cakesbyracheledwards.com/
She did mine and it was great!
I have not reallt decided just yet but have paid a £20.00 deposit with kates kreative cake sto hold our date and she is meeting with us in june to discuss ideas with us and even design something from scratch. She explianed for a 3 tier cake the cost would roughly be between 250-280, but i like the idea of cupcakes to which are £1.00 each
Libraryneck 23-06-2009, 11:54 Would you like to learn how to make flowers in icing for your wedding cake?
Is anyone interested in learning how to make sugar flowers and to decorate cakes. If so I am thinking of hiring a room possibly on a Wednesday or Thursday evening in Stannington for 2 hours. I am on holiday until 6th July so they will be starting after that. If you are interested please reply to my thread or pm me.
Hi, i'd love to learn how to make flowers etc for wedding cakes. My daughter has just booked her wedding and i'd love to be able to help out with things such as the cake.
Trouble is, Stannington is miles away from me - i'm in Todwick (Junc 31 of M1).
