I am not sure why but of late the search engines I use most rfrequently are not working.

Lycos comes up but as soon as it goes to search it cannot find the website. I also used Searchalot.com and that website simply won't come up at all.

I have been using google but don't like it much because it focuses too much on state side sites...hence me using the lycos ones.

Anyone know more about why these sites are bodging up or any other reccomendations for decent search engines.

If you go to the google.co.uk site you get the option to search within the UK... This limits the search to .??.uk sites and those that live at known IP addresses* within the UK...

*An IP address is a unique numeric code given to each internet address using the TCP/IP protocol in the format xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

Yes, I know, technical mumbo jumbo :P

Yup yup Google.co.uk UK search is the one!

Alternatively http://www.altavista.co.uk is ok.

Yes, but IIRC most of them are the same - e.g "so-and so's search engine" powered by Google , but I can't remember who shares the same search engine - but under a different name - I think Yahooooooooo runs a few, meanwhile NTL Cable / ADSL site - it's search engine is powered by Google.

As a side-note, doesen't Virgin.net use NTLs servers for their pop3 mail?
