View Full Version : We went to Thornberry
We went downt o thornberry animal shelter to day, to say hi and have a look round. We can't get a dog til the end of June, but wanted to introduce ourselves etc. They told us they would come and do the home check now so that when we are ready we can litterally go, pick adn take one home (although we are planning on taking this a bit slower than this).
So this is all good news, but we then discover that we have more tim e than we thought and they ask us if they are any we would like to take out for a walk. There's this one, exactly what we wanted, but a tiny bit bigger, so, stupidly, we took it for a walk......and totally fell in love.
So we're now stuck, there is no was we could do anything before at least mid June, and he's bound to be gone by then, we're not sure whether its mean to wish that he isn't or not.
We're so daft at times.

geerarffe 06-05-2007, 15:31 Could you not ask someone to foster the dog for you till you can home it with you?
I don't think they'd do that, and to be honest, it's be pretty unsettling for the poor chap I guess.
geerarffe 06-05-2007, 15:36 Yeah I can see where it would be upsetting for him actually. I'll keep my fingers crossed that you get the man (Dog) of your dreams.
we got our last german shepherd, sam from thornberry and he was a sweetheart, he`d had such a hard life and it showed. but originally we had just gone to look, same thing happened, as soon as i saw him i knew. we went back the following day with the kids and he came home with us!
that place is fatal, you can`t just go and look, i keep saying i`m going to their table top sales that they have, but my other half won`t let me, he knows what i`m like.
squeakyclean 06-05-2007, 16:22 Ahhh, I hope you can sort something out. Which dog is it? I was down there this morning.

I wonder if you offered to contribute towards his upkeep for these weeks, they'd hang onto him for you? I'm sure they'd rather him go to a home that really wants him.
Worth a try perhaps.

What a good idea!

Super idea, but we already asked (geat minds and all that) I think that its for 2 reasons
a) if for whatever reason it didn't work out with us, he has missed nearly 2 months of chance to find a home and get out of there.
b) Shear space, which is a very sd fact.
It was Max by the way, black and white collie X, my guess is with something whippet-like
Aww he sounds lovely- if it's meant to be, he'll still be there for you when you are ready to adopt.
Usually when we take a trip out to Thornberry to donate a few bits, we have th edaft dobermutt in tow so we don't get much of a chance to look around ( I think this is intentional by the other half because he knows if I see something cute n furry I will mither his life away wanting to offer a home...I'll never forget the gorgeous doberman boy they had in there a couple of years ago...) I think we'll have to take a trip out there one day soon and ask if we can walk a doggie.
I don't think they'd do that, and to be honest, it's be pretty unsettling for the poor chap I guess.
Didn't someone else on here say that multiple homes doesn't affect doggies as long as they are happy? I think it's just us people who think about it too much. As long as he's fed, slept and cuddled, he probably couldn't care where he was!
I don't know Noddle, but given the problems that some people report when they first re-home dogs, I'm sure it must have some effect.
Either way, I'm sure we'll end up with a dog (max or not) that we love dearly.

It depends on the dog, and how many times they're moved.
I think it was me that you're thinking of. Whilst dogs do bond, and they do need that social bond, they actually fare a lot better with moving homes, than we think - and actually I think many of them fare much better in two family homes than stuck in kennels :(
