View Full Version : Do we have to be insulting

I have been appauled at some of the insults posters have put on here recently
This forum is meant to be topical & friendly but on a really sensitive issue people insulted each other to the hilt which resulted in the thread beening closed
If you want to insult each other do it in PM not on a heart breaking topic most of us dont want to know you think someone is a p*** :loopy:
Freedom of speach fine verbal abuse :loopy:

Which is why people get 2 or 3 day (or longer) bans.

This is a common problem on all Forums - some people believe we are too tough on abuse, others that we're not tough enough.

It's a tightrope walking act for the Moderators - we feel we usually manage it but we also need help from users who report offensive and abusive material so we can deal with it.

What one person finds abusive another may well see as humourous.
Personally there's very little I find abusive or take offence at the exception being pedophilia and crimes of a sexual nature

btbwild
06-05-2007, 10:13
With some of these people they need banning for much longer (you prob guessed which thread I mean)
I know its hard to monitor or control what people put on here but it really angers me that they think they can be abusive to others.
You do a good job JoeP :-)

I posted a thread a few weeks ago which was removed and I have to say I'm glad it was and I was sorry I ever expressed an opinion as I felt as though I was personally being attacked and insulted by some people. It's made me think twice about what I say.
I would never insult anyone or blame the for their opinions even if I don't share them.

We should be able to have an adult conversation without being insulted im glad to see it did not put you off SF

Is not the idea of this forum to have your say & get opinions from others
Many people have had fantastic advise and help from forumers (myself included) its a small minority that spoil it for people who are genuine

Yes that is the idea, but as with all large places not everyone gets along and some people will always be right no matter what so what use is an opinion when you can't express it without a tirade of insults or threats?

Lets face it most people on here have never met each other so how can they be that judgemental (in my opinion anyway)

everybody is entitled to have their own opinion about things, the world would be a very boring place if we were all forced to have the same opinion, but perhaps sometimes we need to think about how we word these opinons!

I don't think differing opinions is the problem, its the insults when you don't share the same opinion as someone else :)

At the end of the day, I think the Net is a big place with many different people with different ages and experiences, who will view the same thing differently, from different angles. Que sara.

I read back some of the things that I write, and I cringe. Only sometimes, but other times, I'm thinking.."Good". You certainly learn a lot about yourself, and about others too, being on a forum full of thousands of people.

Problem is, when you feel passionate about something, it's easy to just react and type in the first thing you think of! And that sometimes includes calling somebody names, often out of sheer frustration that they can't see what you consider to be a sensible point of view.

I agree users shouldn't be abusive to each other, that's why I frequently don't post replies that I've typed up in a fit of temper. But I will no doubt post something I regret at some stage and if I get a ban, then it will serve me right!

I sometimes think we could do with the "Submit Reply" button having one of those really annoying "Are you sure you want to do this?" pop ups, just so we might stop and think for a moment.

It's much easier in face to face conversations - if you've gone over the top, you can tell by the expression on someone's face and apologise or withdraw the comment you've made in haste. It's very different with the written word.

What's a trainee?

I find that a lot of things which mean the same thing can be hidden in real life, and when read literally, it means something very different.

Anyway, online, you can always trace back the reason why someone flared up. It usually has a reason. It makes you think that some people do not read what is written, or understand the sentiment before replying to it.

I'd recommend a bit of vigilante justice in your case, it's the only way you'll learn.

So what you should do is find out your address, wait late one evening when you've been out on the pop and give yourself a good beating. Leave a note telling yourself to leave yourself alone or next time you'll take a finger.

When I'm having an off day I can be pretty abravise, and because my rational cogs are not fully functioning at those moments I'm embarrassed and shocked by the things I explode with. When I recover my sanity I always go and mop up afterwards, though.

The trouble is, I'm a very direct communicator, and quite a tough cookie, so even when I've got happy head screwed on some people seem to bruise easily by my manner, even when I've meant no harm at all.

Generally, I try to stick to commenting on what people say or do, rather than who they are, I think. I feel guilty when I realise I've been heavy handed and unfair, but when other people insult me mostly I find it hilarious. Recently I was accused of being personal, then told to bugger off!

There's something comical when people lose it and try to swat you when they're just flailing, though. My favourite insults were when I was accused of being in Fathers 4 Justice, and when they really lost it they resorted to calling me... a slow prat. I was furiously called Wise Purdyass too, which I thought was actually rather lovely so I put it in my sig. :hihi:

In reply to the OP, I agree its a shame we can't offer our opinions without either using insulting terms, or attracting personal abuse. :loopy: There is absolutely no need for either, even when there are strong disagreements ranging across the whole gamut of opinions and experiences.

I have a reasonably well developed sense of humour and can recognise irony, both of which I see as necessary when communicating with such a wide range of people - you'd never get to meet such a huge and diverse group in real life! :hihi: Unfortunately some posters may have had a humour bypass and get easily offended by something that will make the majority laugh. Then there are those who design their posts specifically to upset or insult others. I'm also willing to give people the benefit of the doubt in that they may use a word or phrase without realising it could really upset others, and if this is pointed out then hopefully they will have learnt something.

sometimes the forum is definately over-moderated, and sometimes, depending on whos posting, isn't moderated enough.

there is certainly an element of favouritism, in that the friends/favourites of the mod-types are allowed a freer reign than some others.

I dont like seeing people personally attacked, but at the same time, an open forum, which encourages lively debate, should be robust enough to handle a few immature/dissenting voices from time to time. Over-moderating it perhaps shows a lack of faith/trust in the format to keep its shape naturally?

Ive had posts removed which were probably offensive to some, but ive also had a few taken off that were not...although they were asking questions of some of the moderators. This kind of editing (which comes across as abuse of power if not careful) has no place on a forum, no matter how well-meaning the intention.

What part of 'Please use the Helpdesk for questions about Moderating' don't people understand?

Most 'questions' asked of Moderators are unlikely to be answered in public because they usually involve decisions that have been made. Basically, we're not going to discuss policy or decision making in public because there are always a few people who'll use such discussions to start 'Mod Bashing', telling a few untruths about SF, etc.

So, we're not going to leave ourselves with any 'hostages to fortune'.

Here are some simple guidelines to follow :

If you object to something, report it. We may not consider it as offensive as you do, but that's why we then have the Helpdesk.
If you REALLY have a problem, contact the Helpdesk or the Site Owner - just whining on here is really just venting your spleen and is most unlikely to get problems resolved.
We try and Moderate fairly across the board. Sometimes we may 'cut slack' if someone's been provoked; othertiems we may come down hard because someone has been previously warned about their behaviour. With due respect, a lot goes on behind the scenes that Forum users don't know about, and that if we publicised would generate some serious embarrassment for some users. So we keep quiet and expect that you will trust us to do our job.

Whether people like it or not - that's the way teh Forum is run. That's the way the owner wants us to run it. That's teh way it will be run until the owner suggests otherwise. We'll take on board suggestions made 'through channels' but that's all.

The Forum isn't a democracy - it's a benign dictatorship. We're all here as guests of the site owner, and like any good guests we should play by the house rules. If people can't manage that, then they're at liberty to leave the party; they're not at liberty to tell the host how to run his own house.

Closing.
