We have an attic bedroom and in the corner of the room, the chimney flue runs parralel to the wall. There doesn't seem to be a gap between the bricks and the room wall itself. We have a persistant damp patch that appears every winter.

Any ideas on how we can get rid of it?

Friends had exact same problem. Required a builder to locate source of problem (persistent drying out prolonged problem!).

Sources could be:
1: condensation due to inadequate heating and/or ventilation
2: No vent in capped chimney space
3: Repointing required (water ingress through mortar)
4: Capping to redundant chimney requires attention

Don't know about working chimneys though.

And I'm not an expert, so consult a reputable builder. And get more than one opinion/quote.

Good luck

Sorry. Not needed one since I moved back here. John Brownhill was my recommendation 10 years ago but don't know if he's still in the business.
