View Full Version : Saddam and the Pope
Bloomdido 14-11-2004, 10:53 I wonder who has been responsible for more people dying, Saddam or Pope John Paul II.
We have a rough idea of the number of people that were killed or went missing in Saddams regime but what about the legislation condoned by the Pope, that people cannot use contraception, even in the parts of Africa where Aids is rife - and even if they are married but have HIV.
So I guess practicing catholics have three choices - Use safe sex and live in sin or do as the catholic church says and risk infecting partners and children with HIV - or just don't have sex but this option could be a bit tricky for people who depend on that for income.
What do you think?
I wonder if any of the parent's of Popes-to-be have ever considered adding the names 'Georgian Ringo' to their offspring's name.
How good would that be?

why's it dangerous ground?
Because unlike Saddam, The Pope has a lot of very angry followers who are willing to kill for what they believe in... and probably access to WMD's.

that is worryingly true :o :P
Are we keeoing it specifically Pope John Paul (not Catholicism) and Saddam (not Islam)? Could open up a real can of worms!!!
thenewborn 14-11-2004, 20:24 i dont think when they passed the no condom rule they considered AIDS, so idont think he should be classed as a murderer, take into account that catholics are only supposed to sleep with one person, so if they were all good catholics AIDS wouldnt exist anyway

Theres also a big ethical difference between the two - PJP thinks he is doing what is moraly right Saddam (who ran a relatively secular state and was actually on the hit list of the islamicist groups for it) was/is simply a power hungry despot!

but by banning contraception (not just condoms), they are keeping the poor down, because of the ban they will have more kids- more expensive. The catholic church needs reform.
Many catholics in the richer countries tho are not "good catholics" as you say cause they will be buying contraception.

Disco_Cat 14-11-2004, 20:59 I read in the paper this week that an ASBO had been issued to a prostitute to make it an offence punishable by up to 5 years in prision for her to carry condoms.

Bit off topic this but..she got an ABSO to not go to a certain area where she had been 'working' and carry condoms. She could go anywhere else though and carry condoms. According to private eye she got arrested cos she went back to that area as the drug clinic she was attending was there and gave away free condoms! Work that one out....

I think Saddam was another of the secular arab republic dreamers, that dreamed of setting up a modern republic with skyscrapers and hospitals. It's just a lot easier to do with no opposition and absolute power. And absolute power tends to corrupt absolutely

I agree but with a topic like this I couldn’t really see any point staying on topic. And my scepticism about ASBO’s means I'm finding it hard keeping it out of everyday conversation.
Thanks for sourcing the info for me, I was trying to remember were i read it. I couldn’t work it out however, was she allowed in the area as long as she wasn’t carrying condoms?

I don't think it said/can't remember and I've chucked away my copy...sorry! There were some other examples of stupid ABSOs but I can't them either.
Yours ever helpfully....

Well since we are on the topic of contraception thats what sense i mean, i think i know that its not the only way to contract AIDS, we had a friend die of it through drugs.
but since we are on teh topic of contraception and whether the pope is a murderer, then for now lets just think that it is
