hi guys, ive just been asked to take a look at a laptops dvd-rom drive. its apparently tried to be fixed before but the geezer did nothing and it hasnt worked since.

its a QSI Dvd-rom and initially it wont even detect the fact it is a dvd - it was still saying that the other cd i had just used was still in (it wasnt) it was only when i rebooted the machine that it recognised it. i installed windvd as powerdvd was having none of it in order to try and play the original dvd - but nothing. the program opened but no video came through. i tried opening it through the program and pointing to the source drive, but still nothing.

of course when opening the device i can see the ts folders, so they are there, im just wondering what my nest step is or if this drive is totally fubar'd? i tried to find a newer driver for it in hope that it would help, but nothing is out there i can find, and everything i come up against is german as the laptop is an advent.

Thanks for any help you can give me

Laura,
sounds like one of two things, loose connection to DVD drive either power or audio at back of drive
Or its knackered, is the laptop under warranty? If so get a new one for nowt. If not find out model of laptop and contact manufactures and ask for help in either fixing drive or obtaining a new one.

Never heard of this make, it will probably be a generic drive made for one of the more famous brands. Good luck in your quest TT Man

its not under warranty, because its a laptop all the hardware is from all over the place. the qsi is quanta storage industries? or something like that. the websites are all in german, and i assume that because its no longer under warranty they are under no obligation to send a new one out.

Laura, send e-mail and try, no harm in that! they should still be able to point you in the right direction to solve the problem. Not being cheeky, but the connectors are the right way round and in the right slots. Check with a PC you have I put a CD Rom in with the connectors in the wrong slots, changed it round and it worked!

Remove the drive and remove it from the caddy it's probably in and usually they are standard DVD drives which you can get from Ebay.

Laura,

can get DVD in caddy's with USB 2 for about £30. That might be the answer or send them to another mate TT Man

its that old, its a 1gig celeron, its slow as hell and i dont think he is too bothered really, his main issue was that it wouldnt play any avis (no codecs) and thats sorted. so if he wants them that bad im sure he can find them somewhere.....

Lots of DVD drives are quick release with either 1 screw or a catch on the base of the laptop. Worth checking.
