View Full Version : Digital camera - advice on which one to buy
Thinking about buying a digital camera (still using the old film one!). Looking to spend between £50 - £100, so not mega bucks. Can anyone recommend a camera, or which shops have got some good deals on at the moment? We'd only need it for taking happy snaps and to put stuff on eBay, although we could do with the camera coming with the interface thingy for the pc to download the pics. Cheers.

The Interface thingy in non tekkie jargon is probably a usb lead and should come free with the other gizmo.
My advice as usual is optical zoom (ignore digital it is useless),AA batteries (rechargeables are cheap),Stick with a well known name.
Plenty out there, but you gets what you pay for as always, but for what you want to do should be no problem.
Of course if you want to splash out check my link.
Just found this but £120 looks good.

Dug, i would go for a cheapie, say £50 or so, but you will have to pay more for optical zoom. For under £100 you will find a good camera, have look in Argos catalogue, I prefer the one's that fit in your pocket & even with the cheapest digital the picture quality is superb & when you tranfer the pics to your PC you can do almost anything with them & they also have video built in, they all come with the leads & software for your PC.
You will probably never go back to your film camera. Good luck.
What is the difference between an optical zoom and a digital zoom?
What about this one from Argos?

chris@25 04-05-2007, 13:05 Amazon seem to have some good prices on digital cameras, I'd check there before buying anywhere else.

Digital zoom is just like zooming in on a picture on your computer screen, it's obviously bigger, but you will see the pixels the closer you zoom.
Optical zoom physically moves the lens and zooms in with better quality.
Not the most technical answer, but that's about it.
That one looks ok, but don't forget you need a memory card. So add that to your price. The memory on the camera will only take about 16 shots.

You seem to know your stuff! - what do you need to look out for when buying digital, to get a camera that takes the pic when you actually press the button rather than 1 or 2 secs later? thanks

That is called shutter lag.Imagine trying to take a picture of a fast moving jet aircraft if it is 1 or 2 secs later the a/c will be long gone even with panning.
So the shorter the shutter lag the better.
this is good site for giving full details of many cameras.

they're factory reconditioned and come with only a 60 day warranty, but are about half the price of new. Nice little camera, dead simple to use, 5mp - 3x optical zoom.
You'll also need a decent SD card...

and a set of batteries and a charger

JarvisCocker 09-05-2007, 11:24 After much research I have decided to go for the Oylmpus FE 230, you can get it from Pixmania on the internet for £112. It's brand new so I couldn't find many customer reviews on the net, but I've just been into Harrisons photographic shop on London Road and they have it in there. I have a good chat to the guy in the shop about it and it sounds great. It's very small and slim and very easy to use. It's the slimest compact camera by far, and for the money you can't go wrong. The guy in Harrisons reccoemmended it, and as he said they don't stock any camera that they don't think is any good. So that did it for me, decision made.
alchresearch 09-05-2007, 12:18 I'd recommend a Fuji S5600. It takes wonderful pictures and has loads of advanced features for when you're ready to move on to more technical and professional shots. They're around £100 from many suppliers at the minute, but were £150 a month ago and around £200 before that.
haddockman 09-05-2007, 16:11 I've always found Cannon digital cameras to be very good :)
