View Full Version : Petrol Pumps - start, click, stop!
I've just got to have a little moan this morning about petrol pumps around where I live! . . I dont know if it peev's anyone else off but I hate it when you start the pump and it clicks and goes off! I try again and again and again and it keeps clicking just as I think I've got it sorted.
I reckon theres a little bloke in the petrol pump stand who keeps pressing a button just to p*** you off!!!
End of moan - thank you.
I've noticed this alot over the past couple of weeks... I agree with you its a right pain... Damn those little men! ;)
BP garage in Norton / Morrisons nr Woodseats...
Thought it might have just been me... or should i say the car... lol
Happy to know its nothing personal
Just withdraw the nozzle a little from the petrol tank, then try again.
It seems to happen when there's almost a seal between the nozzle surround and the tank. The back pressure causes the pump to stop pumping.
I think....:)

All part of the Public Service Postings offered from The Towers.....
:)
Very annoying I must say. The only way I can seem to stop it is to not put full pressure on the trigger but this means it takes longer to fill up.

Yup,
Found that one myself as well. Trickle-charging a petrol tank is not fun!

Sorry Joe, this doesn't work - It was the first thing I thought of, no matter how much I pull it back or wiggle it around . . it still clicks off! sooooooooooo annoying!!
BoroughGal 13-11-2004, 12:38 I think it's something to do with the car you have. My first 3 or 4 cars ALL had this problem, but my new car is fine.
It's REALLY frustrating, but, the bad news is, I don't think there's anything you can do about it. Other than changing your car. Soz mate.

Hmmm......I know that works on quite a few pumps used / cars I've had.
The switching off is to prevent overfilling and hence spillage of petrol, so it's usually soemthing causing back-pressure up the nozzle.
Interesting...all pumps or just one garage?

I'm sure you know more about cars than me, so I will bow to your judgement. BUT all of my previous cars did it at ALL of the garages I used, despite me pulling the pump half out and going slowly.... But my latest car is fine and I can use any garage. Oooh it's a mystery!

It wouldn't surprise me at all that all your cars did it. The idea works in theory but rarely seems to work in practice! I guess they make teh safety cut outs VERY safe!

I'd just like to say to all those idiots that use Tesco's petrol stations and pay with a card....PAY AT THE PUMP!!!!
It wont kill you, it wont blow up, it wont eat your card, and it even gives you a receipt if you want one... honest. It's quick and simple, and really speeds things up. If you want to buy something from the shop, then i understand, but 90% of you don't.... so whhhhhhyyyyyyy??????
Thank you.:D

I didn't know you could do that ?? Shows how much attention I pay in Petrol Stations
it's a splash back cut-off isn't it?
i've found several garages that seem to have the pressure set so high or the sensitivity that they are always a pain to use. Other garages are just fine though. Sometimes adujusting the angle of the nozzle helps, and i've also found that any swing at all on the pipe can contribute, so grab it and hold it still. I just avoid the 'problem' garages now though.
spyro2000 30-05-2005, 15:17 Is it just me, or does a lot of petrol stations have dodgy pumps.
Sometimes I fill up fast without any trouble, but then there are some pumps that take a lifetime to fill up because whenever you press the lever it clicks and nothing comes out, so you have to press it again, but only squeeze it a tiny bit so its almost dripping out. Am I doing something wrong?
Kristian 30-05-2005, 15:18 Have you tried turning the nozzle sideways? I don't know why, but this seems to work for me.
the only problems i have experienced is the assistant taking too long to allow the fuel! i have noticed that some pumps are quite loud while others are very quiet and you do not realise it has kicked in!

Ooooh no, never tried that before, Ill give it a whizz next time. Does that always do the trick.
It doesnt bother me if im only putting a bit in, but when Im filling up with like 20 quid to go to Birmingham or something it takes forever.

i forgot about that one! i have to twist it all the way round or it splashes back and the sensor thinks the tank is full! that is probably the cause.

Seems to work for me! Some cars are easier to fill than others IMO. I have a Vauxhall at the moment, and that's mostly fine, but I had a Fiat a few years back that took ages to fill no matter what I did.
it's the splashback sensor. Either the sensor is too sensitive or the pressure is too high. There are a few garages where I always have a problem, even if I twist the pump to any old angle.
I was once told that the smaller petrol companies, i.e. not BP, Shell, etc., put cheaper cleaning additives in their petrol. This causes it to froth more and thus hit the sensor well before your tank is actually full. Try pulling the nozzle out a bit rather than pushing it in all the way.
I prefer the pumps that pour a little slower because I have to admit that I am terrible at hitting my desired amount on the head:
If I want exactly £10.00 worth I get up to £9.36... then a little more, £9.54... a bit more, £9.82... gently now, £9.96... that's about it now just a small squeeze an Ohhhh, denied, £10.02! How the hell did that happen?
Then, I end up going on up to £11.00 just to get a nice round number.
Dam, £11.08.. onwards to £12.00... let's blow the budget!

I find that one particular brand *cough*jet*cough* cut off with anything but the lightest squeeze. It once took me 15 minutes (I timed it) to put £30 in the tank. They really are that bad.
In order to avoid the 2p over/under problem, I always fill up. That way I can spend £27.43 with impunity :) I am quite good at getting 1p out of those things if necessary though.
I always fill up and just pay with a card, not filling up would just mean I had to go more often.

i used a pay at the pump at tesco's in docklands the other day, confused me slightly so in a stupid moment i drove away with the fuel cap off... :loopy:
ginger_lion 31-05-2005, 07:49 Last time I used the BP in Crosspool the cutty-out-clicky thing happened. I asked the attendant if I was doing something wrong and he said it was just because the pumps are old and need replacing. Sooner the better I say - took me about ten minutes to get a few gallons!
*Twinkle* 31-05-2005, 09:38 If you squeeze too hard it tends to cut out... But even with my gentle touch it sometimes cuts out and I end up shouting at the pump lol!!
I once filled up at the station near Farm Road and there was a guy at the other side of the pump who kept squeezing it too hard and it cut mine off too at the same time... I gave him the evil eye cos it happened about 7-8 times, so I thought I'd try and annoy him back, so I started squeezing it iratically and cut him off too... Neither of us said a thing until I burst out with "ooo s**t" because I'd gone a few quid over my budget lol! Serves me right for playing silly games with silly boys hehe
