I heard on the news last night that Sheffield has the 2nd highest fly tipping problem in the UK. It's nice to see that Sheffield is finally getting some national recognition :)

The city centre is a bit better than it was a few years ago, at least. We should all go out with a bin bag for an hour and make the world a better place... and we should do like they do in America, and offer a refund for returning cans and bottles, you'd see less of them thrown in the street then. alternageek 02-05-2007, 09:02 Sheffield is a mess, people don't seem to think twice about dropping litter all over the place. I think it is high time we had a return to the "3p deposit" on glass bottles - It would be good for recycling rates It would cut down on llitter It would support businesses in South Yorkshire OK, it would be a pain in the ass for some people (ie those who dont recycle anyway), but local community groups could offer to pick em up in return for claiming the fee. (I recall doing this when I was in the cubs a LONG time ago) But what is the problem? The big supermarkets - they have constantly resisted attempts to bring this in. Yet, it seems to work fine in place like Germany - where they even sell yogurt in glass pots so they can be part of the scheme. HONK BasilRathbon 02-05-2007, 09:39 Well done to all the flytippers who've made Sheffield a player on the main stage in this competition! Banjo Griner 02-05-2007, 09:40 Respect da Sheffo scummaz!! cgksheff 02-05-2007, 10:07 Yes. Sheffield is a littered mess and people need sorting, but just a few facts relevant to the published survey: - Their definition of 'fly-tipping' is at least enough rubbish to fill one bin-bag. - Isolated general litter is not being recorded in their survey. - The majority of reports in Sheffield came from Sheffield Homes (92%)and included household waste put out on non-collection days or waste left outside of collection areas/chutes. neeeeeeeeeek 02-05-2007, 10:17 I cycle to work along the river and past the Arena and over the railway bridge by the side of the canal it is a disgrace. It's hard to prove unless people are caught red handed and then they get a small fine. a 10grand fine may put people off but surely it must be cheaper to stop charging business to use the tip than cleaning up and trying to prosecute people. algy 02-05-2007, 11:22 Fly-tipping is a real problem, but it's not helped by the Council. If you have something to go to the dump but don't have any transport, or it's too big for the car, the bin people (whatever the current name is) won't collect, even if you're willing to pay, because they only have compacter vehicles. The best they can do is tell you to look in the yellow pages for someone with a truck. If you use those small gas canisters ( for blowlamps etc) you can't put the empties in the bin. Nor will they accept them at the dumpit site. The best they can offer is try taking it back to the shop where you bought it, and ask them to dispose of it. cgksheff 02-05-2007, 11:25 .......... the bin people (whatever the current name is) won't collect, even if you're willing to pay, because they only have compacter vehicles. ...... Don't the council provide a service in which they will send a truck to your house to pick up large pieces of waste? I'm sure they used to provide this service. tom3t0 02-05-2007, 11:32 if england was the same shape as a human body, sheffield would be the arse hole. belly button more like neeeeeeeeeek 02-05-2007, 11:34 Don't the council provide a service in which they will send a truck to your house to pick up large pieces of waste? I'm sure they used to provide this service. They will collect stuff but they charge for it. As for the people in the yellow pages, I imagine quite a few of them are the people flytipping. The tip needs to be free and a £10000 fine for anyone caught dumping stuff should be in place. Green Web 02-05-2007, 11:40 I think Sheffield is the worst and the most likely people to fly tip have the least excuse http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=174353 algy 02-05-2007, 13:52 Not true: http://www.veoliaenvironmentalservices.co.uk/sheffield/pages/wastecolbulky.asp I know, but I spoke to them twice about it and got the same answer, so I referred it to my local councillor who took it up with them and they got the same answer, we can't because we don't have suitable vehicles. cgksheff 02-05-2007, 13:54 What were/are you trying to get removed? algy 02-05-2007, 13:55 Don't the council provide a service in which they will send a truck to your house to pick up large pieces of waste? I'm sure they used to provide this service. They used to, pre-privatisation. What I'd like to know is, if they only have compactor vehicles, how do they collect fridges and freezers? doddy 02-05-2007, 14:19 Anyone who as something dumped should make sure that the company whos doing the job is licenced to dump waste. We show all our customers our licence before we do the job Pooch_1 02-05-2007, 15:08 Sheffield is a mess, people don't seem to think twice about dropping litter all over the place. You used to get money back if you returned your beer bottles back to off sales years ago. poppins 02-05-2007, 15:17 You used to get money back if you returned your beer bottles back to off sales years ago. I'm shocked that you can't return bottles & cans, our kitchen cleaner at work takes home at least 5 dozen cans a week, he gets 5 cents a can. fox20thc 02-05-2007, 15:21 Well Claywheels lane being off the beaten track thanks SCC for that one ( sorry rant about totally UNRELATED stuff - Menta) People use it as a dumping ground and more horrid they use the river. I saw some stuff dumped from the road in the Don which included a 3 piece suite, a central heating control unit and a fridge freezer. Other stuff includes heat exchangers from air con units and builders rubble.  Pooch_1 02-05-2007, 15:33 Well Claywheels lane being off the beaten track thanks SCC for that one ( sorry rant about totally UNRELATED stuff - Menta) People use it as a dumping ground and more horrid they use the river. It has always been a disgrace that area around there. Darbees 20-06-2007, 13:22 Look at this (http://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/news/newsindex/display.var.1483168.0.police_get_tough_on_tippers. php) that is happening in Bradford. They do all they can to make tipping difficult and now they are pulling people before they have even done anything. I need to get driving round there in a pickup full of rubbish ASAP. |
