For all your pale and interesting folk, for those of you out there that are fair.. Please don't underestimate the power of the sun whilst lazing around in your back garden this summer!!

I've got a very painful red angry chest from sunbathing yesterday.. I had lunch outside at Devonshire Green, just watching the world go by for about an hour.. Then returned home to do some reading on the front lawn, possibly 40 minutes.. Later on I went swimming and I was red raw!!

Please be really careful!

You are right, the sun is much hotter than it looks! Thankfully my DD has more brains than her mother and fetched me the suncream :hihi:

Im still peeling from a days fishing a couple of weeks ago. The horrible thing is, you can sit there for hours and not feel a thing, its only once youve gone indoors that the pain starts and you realise your as red as a lobster.

Still, it beats winter.

I only venture out in the sun when it has gone round the corner of the house, quite happy to sit out in the warmth but definitely not to sunbathe

It's actually much easier to burn in spring than later in the summer- partly because we have had less sun exposure during the winter so the melanin in our skin is at a lower level, and partly because more ultraviolet light actually reaches the ground because the ozone levels in the upper atmosphere have yet to build up to their summer levels.

Sounds like you fell into the classic trap Twinks- hope you feel less sore soon.

A miniature hole in the ozone layer passed over South Yorks yesterday, allowing direct hard radiation from The Sun to fall on the planet.

As well as unusual sunburn, look out for giant ants, and Triffids. :suspect:

Ouch Twinkle..:(
A friend of mine burns really easily.. She really does have to cover up.. She has been caught out a few times and she swears by Dream Cream from Lush to sooth her sunburn down..
It's not the cheapest of creams, but it really does live up to it's name..

I've got this gorgeous aftersun and have been slathering it on so its gone down a bit lol.. the tan lines are a bit interesting though lol :hihi:

Is there *any* way for the pale an interesting to build up a resistance to the sun? Or am I damned to a life of factor 30 and sunhats forever?? :(

Rubbing a combination of lard, wild honey and horse manure on the skin can help pale people buld up a reisistance to the effects of sunlight. You just have to get the ratio of ingredients right.

I am quite fair skinned, and burn quite easily.
However continous exposure to the Sun builds up a resistance.
I was in the merchant navy for eight years, sailing mostly in tropical areas, and in that time built up a deep tan.
It took about ten years to go back to my natural colouring after I left.

Sun hot. Fire burn. Water wet.

You do build up a resistance, when I lived in North Carolina I had a farmers tan from everyday life that lasted for ages.

I stick with the pale and interesting..

I got burnt in mid-march a few years ago, spent a nice afternoon climbing Mam Tor and came back looking like a lobster!

Nowadays from march/april onwards if i'm out for a while its factor 50 (i never wear anything less than 30) and still manage to colour through that sometimes!! :o :help:

lol dont people say some daft things.. I was buying a bikini in Debenhams and the woman behind the counter said "Ooooh love, do you know you've caught sun" - I was polite and said that yes, Id been in the garden, but really I wanted to tell her just how flaming hot it were and if I hadnt noticed I'd have to be blind/unable to feel pain! Grrrr!

It is not so much it build up a resistance, it is the fact that you are covered in so many flys and wasps, that no sunlight can reach your skin.:hihi:

the use of sunbeds is really good for that! just 6 mins a week will get ytour skin use tot he hot sun shine, and 6 mins a week is better for you than burning in the sun

I am sat near the window, it is double-glazed, but I can feel the heat of the sun through it burning into my skin - can this have a drying effect on my skin rather like being outdoors?

Well I went on Friday for 3 mins, then Monday for another 3 mins... I'm thinking of doing 6 minutes this Thursday just to build myself up... I'm sick of having my holidays ruined cos I'm burnt....

Nope... But neither is getting pan fried by the slightest bit of sun exposure... It doesnt matter what factor protection I use, I'm always burnt and in pain... :(
