Anyone any ideas on how to get into this sector within the Sheffield area?

I attended Uni here and recently moved back but really want to get into this sector, my degree had some of this covered (the housing section and a small part of the legal aspect of it) but finding it hard to get a job without experience in the sector.

Any ideas of good shelters or charities in the area to contact?

Thanks
Martin

There is the Archer project at Sheffield Cathedral who work with the homeless - they are looking for volunteers http://www.sheffield-cathedral.co.uk/links.asp?articleID=50

Also, keep checking the Sheffield Council website - all their jobs get advertised on it http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/whats-new/job-vacancies They employe homelessness officers. Also Sheffield Homes for housing officers and other related jobs in housing. http://www.sheffieldhomes.org.uk/jobs

Shelter employ advisors, there are all the housing associations, and of course agencies like Eden Brown who you could register with for starters? http://www.edenbrown.com/housing-jobs/2DE0640C-0E9D-43FA-8152-5FD026885035

Good luck. I worked for several years in different housing related jobs for a couple of organisations, and although its not the most glamorous work, its interesting and there are career opportunities.

It's a while since i worked in this sector but Nomad and Roundabout both used to run hostels that employed volunteers or relief workers with little experience. Nomad and Shelterline also trained volunteers in advice work. Maybe worth trying them.

I worked at the archer project about 3 years ago-its now based at the cathedral and its a good place to get some experience, as its a very busy day centre. Be prepared to just 'get on with it' but its loads of fun.
