A walk of approximately 6 miles will take place on Monday May 7th from High Green to Wortley and back via Wortley Park , leaving High Green at 10.45 a.m.
The meeting point will be the crossroads at the top of High Green, at Thompson Hill, and for public transport users, the 77 bus leaves from Pond Street at 10.05, arriving at High Green at 10.45. Return buses are at 15 minutes past the hour.
Any newcomers who would like to come are welcome. This is an easy walk with no great climbs (lots of stiles though), and on this occasion we are intending to go inside Wortley Hall for refreshments, which should be an interesting experience.

What about people who bring their dog with them, surely dogs are not allowed in Wortley Hall, that would put some dog owners off attending this walk

I can't imagine that dogs would be allowed into the Hall, but they would be welcome along with their respective owner(s) on the walk. Arrangements could be made to look after a few dogs whilst owners are having a meal.

Where theirs a will, theirs a way.

Going in the Hall isn't a necessity, and if we do go in it'll only be to have a quick gander, and maybe bring a drink outside.
Are you thinking of coming, and bringing a dog with you?

Come on board with or with-out your dog.
You will enjoy the walk. (If the weather keeps nice).

Or you could join the Norfolk Park walk on Thursday evening (tomorrow) - meet at 6pm at Granville Road tram stop. This looks like it may be quite close to you.

I can't do Thursdays at all I'm afraid, shame as yes the walk tonight would have been ideal for me.

Monday's looking unlikely now too, some time eh?!!!

Taxman says he will definitely be going on this walk, he also mentioned something about breakfast but I'm not quite sure what he meant.

Can we get a meal at Wortley Hall or at the local pub?
Thanks.

I would bring sandwiches, especially seeing as we probably won`t be dressed for somewhere like Wortley Hall. Alternatively there`s the Countess Tea Rooms.

If we take our boots off at the door before we go into Wortley Hall we will be alright. I'm thinking that the meal situation may be a problem with it being Bank Holiday.

Why not give them a call Albert see what the situation is, after all, you're a part owner aren't you?

parkwoman

You could just bring sandwiches anyway then take them back home for tea if we do buy a meal.

Does anyone using the Forum have memories of doing the Hall up in the 1950s?

Just been to Wortley Hall. The guy there told us that the bar is open tomorrow 12-2 and serve sandwiches and snacks, and that walkers are welcome. So maybe this could be a good option Albert, and everybody?

Can't believe what good weather we had today despite a crappy weather forecast. A good day all in all, and a warm welcome to newbie Mardy Bum66 :-), but there are some questions which need answering.....
Did we really spend over 2 hours in Wortley?
Should we change the name of the group to the Forum Strollers Group, after it took us around 6 hours to walk 7 miles today?
After two previous bad experience in the Countess Tearooms, why did we go there again to suffer a third bad experience?
Has anybody got any suggestions for our next social event following our successful Walking Group Bbq this weekend?

Thanks for a really great bbq yesterday Scubz. I really should have chosen the walk today, but Mr Godzilla and I had planned to support Sheffield Retired Greyhound Fund at the Highland Fling in Graves Park. We got there at around 12..15pm and the queue to get in had to be seen to be believed, so we didn't bother and ended up in Waitrose instead. If I'd had my wits about me, I could have phoned Taxman and caught up with you somewhere on route. Never mind, I will be on the walk on Thursday.

We were all thinking about you today when we passed the retired greyhounds place, only seems like yesterday that you were telling us all about it on our previous sortie to that part of the woods. Shame you didn't come today, but you weren't to know about the queues at Graves Park were you?
Look forward to seeing you again on Thursday if you make it.

Well it might have been a more easygoing stroll today but it suited me - it's the first time I haven't flaked out on the settee when I got home!
A highlight for me today was hearing a cuckoo for the first time in years.
I've uploaded my photos:

Apologies for the really poor quality of some of them - I really do need some lessons!

Thank you so much Scubz for inviting me along to the BBQ yesterday and the walk today and for making me feel so welcome. I had a lovely time! Everyone in the group is so friendly - including Taxman! lol

Yes, I wonder why it took us so long to walk the distance?! lol It was great fun though - very convivial! - and the scenery was just beautiful; so many tree-lined hills.

Another question that really needs an answer is... How can anyone possibly serve COLD apple crumble and ice-cream?! SACRILEGE! Shame on the Countess Tea Rooms! lol

Anyway, I'll share my photos, when I eventually finish the film and get them developed.

Bye for now...

Thanks Scubz for the enjoyable BBQ and follow up walk around Wortley. A little more leisurely than normal but we did spend a good deal of time in the bar at Wortley Hall – of note a fine pint of Wentworth Best Bitter, followed by a lunch break, followed by a second lunch break – why did I fall for ordering rhubarb cake with tepid lumpy custard:gag: – just add this to the culinary delights of cold apple crumble with ice cream:gag: . I just read the comments from a previous visit to the Countess Tea Rooms – sort of gluttons for punishment eh:)
Thanks for the photos Parkwoman, after remembering to put spare batteries in my rucksack I go and spoil it by leaving my memory stick in my computer.
Don't know if I will make Thursday's walk as I'm studying for an exam the week after next - well I will be when I start studying.
Nice to meet newbie Mardy Bum66 - a long way to come so glad you enjoyed the fun.

Yes, Neoteric, I did enjoy myself! It was definitely worth the drive - and it wasn't really all THAT far to come, not REALLY! lol It was great to walk in some different countryside for a change and great to meet some nice new people too. I'd like to come again!
