Can anyone tell me if you are a single man or woman with no dependants can you claim Working Families Tax Credit? I am neither but I'm sure of two individuals who are getting this despite having no dependants. Is this right? Surely it's for families.
I am sure i read somewhere that single people can claim Tax credits, although which ones i do not know?.
Who Qualifies for New tax Credits?
Nine out of ten families with children, - all those with incomes up to 58000 - will benefit from new tax credits. And for the first time, people on low incomes but without children will also be entitled to support through the Working tax Credit

Me and my partnerrecently split and I was told that he could claim tax credits as a single man as long as he worked 35 hours a week. I don't think this is very well publicised though!

The two people I refer to only work 32 hours respectively and they get it and both live alone. I don't understand it.

Well if they are being paid legitimatly from their jobs, ie; not cash in hand, then they must qualify.
Take a look at the link above.

it isn't actually called working families tax credit anymore though...it is just working tax credit.
I know two guys who are getting money because they work over 30 hours per week and are over 21...i think that is the age limit. One of which I forced to apply since I found out about the new rules.
This is legitimate and came in with the new child tax and working tax credit system over a year a go.
I think that you can claim working tax credits if you are supporting children OR are disabled, as well as working 16 or more hours a week. Also I think it's meant to support you if you are on a low income and the children/disability prevents you earning more.
I used to get it but then got a better paid job so don't get it any more.
