I've read both of the books and I thought the first one was hilarious, but I didn't like the second one quite as much.
I thought the first film was pretty funny. I saw the second one last Saturday as a preview in Didsbury. It's been AGES since I read the book so I can't even remember how close the film was to the book. But it was easy, lighthearted viewing which was just what I needed for a hungover Saturday afternoon!
I've just seen the film as it is previewing at ugc centretainment. Absolutely hilarious... better than the first!
You know you've seen a good film when you come out and you're cheeks are aching!
booked in to see it on fri night with the girls, then a drink after to disect it. have just read the edge of reason again this week and Daniel Cleaver is hardly in it so am assuming the film is v different from the book as i imagine Hugh Grant is in it quite a bit. as long as its true to Bridget and its funny it really doesn't matter. looking forward to it very much.
it does remind me of me - have had my Daniel Cleaver - just looking for the Mark Darcy!!!

unfortunatley Hugh isn't in it as much as he was in the first... I am surprised how many posters he is on as they make it look like he's got a huge part! Some bits different from book but doesn't spoil it and Colin Firth is in it lots so what more does a girl need!

If all bad acting makes you want to vomit you must be throwing up 24/7.
Anyway, the whole point of Hugh Grant is that he just plays Hugh Grant. That's why I like him anyway, don't know about anyone else. I don't think his films are meant to be Skakespeare.

I'm right with you there Natalie (apart from hugh grant...he's such a...I don't know...'boy'! IMHO of course). I've not seen any of the films, heard they are funny though - maybe I'll be tempted with this one.
Loved the books but was HUGELY dissappointed with the films. Renee was a shocking Bridgit with a shocking english accent to match. And why oh why did they put colin firth in the first film when all book fanatics know she interviews him in the second book!!!!! I mean come on no thought at all was used there.

In what way? Her English accent's fine. I suggest you listen to Dick Van Dyke in 'Mary Poppins'

Isn't this a bit over the top for what is basically a lighthearted film? I certainly didn't take offence in this manner, but then I don't have any feminist 'issues'.

Yeah it is a light-hearted film (or so I've heard). I think the point is that doesn't the character believe that she must have a man to be 'worth' anything or cannot have a good time without one? I think Natalie is saying (well I am anyway!) that some of the characters in sex in the city are 'stronger' - or whatever you want to call them - women and is more enjoyable/funny to watch. Thats all.
Not got a clue what this has to do with 'feminist issues' though - sounds like you're using that as an insult? I like men as much as the next (straight) woman (!?) and but just don't feel that the being in a relationship bit is the be all and end all...
The other film mentioned above - coyote (sp?) ugly - saw ages ago, can't remember the ending but remember enjoying it!

Er, as I'm female myself, how can this be an insult? It just sounded like a feminist statement to me as nothing like this occured to me when I watched it. Apologies if that's not the case, but I didn't take the film so seriously.

I agree with you totally here, Natalie. As I said on another thread recently, I started reading "Bridget Jones Diary" a couple of years ago, but found it so boring I couldn't be bothered to finish it. I thought it wasn't funny and not very well-written, and I just didn't care what happened to Bridget.
To enjoy the book, I think the reader probably had to empathise with/relate to Bridget, and to paraphrase the Smiths, the book said 'nothing to me about my life'.

threecolours 11-11-2004, 19:09 Thanks for replying Killian - No worries. I thought you would and I need to turn my computer off now!
Just to be pedantic though...I'm amazed at the amount of women that think calling another woman a 'feminist' is an insult! In some ways what we're talking about is a feminist statement ie don't need a man to be a happy woman (not saying that it doesn't help though!). Getting a bit deep now so I'm off!

No problem TC. I sort of slept through the whole feminist thing, so not sure I really understand it. I'd love to be treated as a sex object (if only :D ), but too old to hold out much hope. I tend not to notice things like that in films. Just a romantic, I guess.
But he can't act, he just plays Hugh Grant in different costumes.
If I'd not seen him in "An Awfully Big Adventure" I'd agree with you but in that film he acts his socks off.

Well we could both be wrong then, couldn't we? As neither of us actually know Hugh Grant he might be completely different in real life. How do you know he's not a moody tw*t with a serious bad temper. In that case, he is most certainly acting, clever clogs.

Your right, he is different in real life, in films he is a charming gentleman, in real life he shags cheap hookers behind his wifes back.
Perhaps he is a good actor after all.

I don't know, it must have been difficult for him.

Oh well, it was worth a try ;)
i went to see bridget jones diary the edge of reason with my boyf and it was fantastic, i can say that most us girls can relate to bridget.
NatalieSheff 15-11-2004, 12:27 def not this girl, now terminator 3 thats more like it!
watched that last nite on channel 5 with boyf must say we both enjoyed it it had more action in it.
saw it on fri and loved it.
why must people deeply anaylse films like this - its just a bit of fun! its not a real life story so don't take it seriously!!
i laughed my head off most of the way through, just go along and enjoy it; surely thats the point of going to see films!!
NatalieSheff 15-11-2004, 12:36 i just hate women being seen as pathetic all the time

Defo not this girl either.
I find Bridget really annoying and shallow.
Yes, she is a stereotype of the neurotic, self-obsessed, middle class female singleton. Most women I know [wife and friends included] are not babyish, and shallow like this cardboard cut-out. They are much more mature, self-assured and at ease with the world. Most of my female students [average birth year 1985] think Bridget is ludicrous. I'll say one thing though, without fear or favour, she's got a lovely arse.
NatalieSheff 16-11-2004, 09:26 shes fat sorry but its true
i know what you mean about the pathetic women part but we all know its just an exaggeration of what some of us feel some of the time.
there are parts of me in bridget and watching it makes me laugh at myself. surely this is a good empowering thing??
i have to say i find it difficult to relate to tomb raider or terminator and it doesn't make me laugh
NatalieSheff 16-11-2004, 10:05 austin powers - funny

I quite agree. I don't take the books/films seriously. I just find them funny cos she so dizzy! She's just a character that has had her neurotic traits exaggerated for comedy value.
i cant watch any film where hugh grant plays hugh grant
hate that man! hate him hate him hate him

hello not everyone is a stick !!!!!!!!!!!!
I think posh spice looks loads better with some weight on her ,
its not about the size in it all its about the personailty
threecolours 02-12-2004, 21:56 Don't care about the size of bridegt jones - more about the fact that she needs to grow up and is sooo annoying (yeah...I know its only a film and meant to be a comedy..).
Ladyovmanor - I know what you mean about personality counting more than size but not sure I'd have used the personality (or whatever you'd call it) of posh spice as an example!
