Just got this email which I thought I would share. Email Follows.....
Dear Friend,
The Scottish parliament has introduced proportional representation for
local government elections.
Scottish voters will be using STV in the local government elections by May
2007.
At a stroke this will change the culture of local government politics in
Scotland, making councils representative and ending Labour's traditional
one-party dominance of the central belt.
Similar reform is under discussion in Wales.
Make Votes Count believes that this represents a tremendous democratic
breakthrough and that what is good enough for Scotland should be available
in England.
We have produced a topical pamphlet entitled "missing modernisation: the
case for voting reform in English local government". Edited by Alan Pike,
the pamphlet includes contributions from Alan Whitehead MP, Chris Game,
Councillor Steve Munby, Dan Corry, Mayor Steve Bullock, Fiona Mactaggart
MP, Councillor Andrew Burns, Paul Tyler MP, Ken Ritchie and Lewis Baston.
Price ?2.50 each or ?10 for six (inc P&P). Please order by reply e-mail or
telephone 0207928 2076 during office hours Tues - Thurs.
We have also been circulating a "make local votes count" motion calling on
the government do take steps to introduce a more representative voting
system for local government in England. So far four councils (3 Lib Dem
and one Labour) and almost 1000 councillors of all parties have signed up.
The petition is on http://www.makelocalvotescount.org.uk this e-petition
will be sent to number 10 Downing St. on St Andrew's day.
So please sign up yourself online by midday on Tuesday 30th of November
and also e-mail friends and colleagues to ask them to show their support. (You
don't have to be a Councillor to sign the motion, just double click on the
link above).
