View Full Version : Is there anybody there?
Whilst reading some threads on here the other night I noticed one about Tarot Readings. I found it a bit hard to believe, in this day and age, that reasonably intelligent people would believe such poppycock. The same applies to Star Signs, what a load of nonsense. Who first came up with the idea of Star Signs? A man probably sat on the side of a hill somewhere and decided that when the moon is in line with Jupiter it would mean that if you were born in January it was time you had your hair cut! Is there a type of person who is addicted to this sort of thing? And why do people desperately search for good news, is it because they have none in their real lives.
Is it fair that, in some cases, vulnerable people are misled by an old lady with a tea towel on her head looking into a crystal ball? And what about the awful behaviour of so called psychics who apparently talk to the dead. That’s laughable, but when people who desperately miss loved ones are charged for this “service” its verging on the criminal.
Therefore, I propose that all such are banned as con artists, which they no doubt are.
Its like all belief systems. Its a way of avoiding responsibility for your own choices. Its easier to say i was told than say i made the desicion all on my own and i got it wrong. Its for the weak minded.

Trouble is, we'd have to ban all religions too. Many intelligent people believe things that defy today's scientific discoveries. They believe in things because doing so supports them enough to live. The vulnerable people who are "misled" have chosen to believe in psychic powers or they wouldn't enter into the transaction in the first place - they want it to be true. I think, in the main, they're buying hope.
Personally, I don't believe in much beyond what's physically here. But stuff like this can really play a part for the people who need to believe it's true.
schizodoor 27-04-2007, 11:04 You'd have a bbc3 show last night catching out the 'so called' psychics cheating in a 'haunted' factory, it was hillarious!!

anyway Ive had my palm read, she said - "i see a man sat with a girl on the sofa, he's drunk had a bottle of wine, now attempting to drink some beer. he posts a thread about star signs. then falls asleep. the next day he's bored at work and thinks i know i'll post a thread about star signs"
Think i should give the red wine a miss! okay i'm sorry for repeating myself!

You seem to have a strange fascination with my local toileting facilities. Would you like to meet up sometime to discuss the leisure activities of Ted Heath? ;)
Getting back on topic, I was going to mention the concept of deja vu on here, but you've probably read about it before.
mmmm red wine.. anyway where we're we. i was just thinking what a waste of time star sign are does anyone have a view on this?
I wonder why it only applies to stars/planets in the solar system and not those further afield.
SleepyHead 27-04-2007, 13:44 Probably because it was more-or-less invented in the 18th century (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarot_reading), although the cards (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarot) date to the late 14th century.
Divination by various methods had been going on for centuries before then, though. There are references to fortune telling as far back as ancient Egypt (about 3000 BCE), and it probably goes back much further than that.
Personally I have found the credibility of the reading tends to depend on the card reader (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solitaire_(James_Bond)). ;)

*yeah, that's an invitation.
