Hi,
I have noticed during the recent improvement works around Sheffield, that one of the steel bridges serving the old Manchester line has been renewed.
Are there plans to re-open the line in the future. I have heard rumours around making it a RORO route for lorries or even to make it into another road.
I am sure someone out there knows something about this. I really hope it does reopen.

I'm not sure about the future, but I came across this website a few months ago and it makes quite interesting reading. I wonder if it will ever actually take off

I hope it does as it will make life a lot easier on the woodhead pass.
But why stop at HGVs, double decker wagons for cars would be great?

The idea is absolute nonsense, the traffic jams are bad enough at the end of the M67 as it is without adding queues for this. What's needed is a proper dual carriageway all along the Woodhead route (the disused rail track bed provides the room for it for most of the way), which would have been done decades ago in any country other than this one. Failing that the long awaited Mottram bypass would at least be a start.

Where on the 628 does the trackbed run alongside?

On the left as you're going towards Tintwistle, down near the electricity pylons.
Wouldn't it be better just to run passenger trains from the north of Sheffield (Chapeltown, Stocksbridge) to Manchester, to cut down on the number of cars that try to cram themselves on to Snake and Woodhead every day?
Taking Lorries across the Pennines by rail clearing the Woodhead road of them. Using an asset already available, don’t talk so daft it’s far too sensible an idea to ever get planning permission.
Another group Central Railways have been trying for years to get planning permission to reopen the same route taking goods from the north east and Sheffield to the Channel tunnel and on into Europe. Again most of the route is already available but it is a stalled project.
The motto seems to be if it’s a good idea forget it.

The line is still in use from Sheffield to Deepcar (Corus Steels). It is used daily by the steelworks for freight at around 9pm each evening.
