I went and got a bun from greggs in crystal peaks earlier on and the person that served me picked it up with her fingers!!!!!!! :gag: They usually use the little plastic sheet things, its happened a couple of times before and i think it's disgusting.... I was looking forward to it aswell, but i didn't want to say anything while i was there... just beware if you go!

Consider it a lucky escape, not from the germs, but from the "bun"

Maybe you should have pointed it out to them whilst there? I thought it was something they had to do theses days, using the plastic thingys or gloves?

I know they should, it must be against health and safety, surely?! I didn't really want to say anything, it was only about 40p! I'm just glad i saw her!

there are worse things getting in your body everyday than a few germs on a bun.
don't get me started on lavatories!!

it can be off putting though especially if they have chewed fingernails or something similar.

I always wonder why they have them plastic tongs for self serve bread rolls in places like Sainsburys. I mean, why would I bother using them to pick up something I'm going to eat myself? I could understand if you have to rummage around in the basket, but I just pick up a bun and shove it in a bag - it's my problem if I've got bogeys on my fingers and then get them on the bun I'm going to eat meself, isn't it? And it's not like I handle all the food in my kitchen at arms length with plastic tongs like it's covered in spittle is it?

Bakers and chefs usually prepare food with their bare hands, do they not?

report her to the store manager as the should obey to the rules set out in the health and hygiene laws, that if they have there food health and hygiene qualification which is a must for staff in that brand.

if i thought about the people who have touched the food i eat throughout the day i'd be dead . i hate to see anyone touch the food i am going to eat but as my mother used to say, what the eye dont see ..

Did you know a prepacked sarnie is handled by up 10 people on a production line before it gets to you.

If I thought about this everytme I ate something I'd be Twiggy, granted it may not be best practice but in reality it happens all the time without you knowing.

Whats the point in moaning about something when you cant do anything about it now?? You let slip a golden opportunity to pull them up on their hygiene.. and lets face it, it needs to be done! I wouldnt let some random stranger get their mucky mitts all over some food that I was just about to eat!
I know its not nice to pull someone up, but hygiene is very important, you dont even know if they washed their hands after going to the loo! :gag:

Come on now, I know what she did was against the health and hygiene rules but it's hardly going to kill you. The whole work area around her will be clean and you've got more chance of picking up a bug up from the handrail on the escalator. So unless you washed your hands and didn't touch anything else before you took the bug from the bag, you've more chance of infecting the bun than her.

I once went to buy a pastie and on the counter were cheese and onion on one tray and on another tray were meat and potatoe. i asked for cheese n oinion which the assistant promptly picked up a meat one with her fingers when i reminded her it was the other one i wanted , she dropped the 1st one back on its tray and then sniffed and wiped her nose on the back of her hand then put a meat pasty in a bag..:gag: :gag: I refused politely explaining i didnt want her cold ..it wasnt greggs , i cant remember where ..

Yeah, but are they dealing with cash which obiously carries lots of germs. When chefs and bakers use their hands it will be when they are not dealing with 'contaminated' items such as money, etc

This reminds me of a kenny everett sketch where he plays a cook/chef in a rather posh tearoom. He walks through the room to the lavatory (near where two old dears are sat), opens the door and goes in.. and then reappears a second later, walks up to the old dears, picks up the sugar cube tongs on their table and goes back in to the lavatory.

There's a sign on the toilet door about keeping your hands clean.. It was a blink and you'll miss it gag, but really rather funny (although I think you had to be there..).

Handling food and money without washing your hands is disgusting. I'd certainly refuse to eat anything like that - especially if the person has rings on! That's against health and safety before they've even begun to serve you..
