Scotland is to ban smoking in enclosed public places by spring 2006. How long before it hits England?

Scotland already hit England... Don't you watch Alan Titchmarsh?

Lets hope we English can follow the Scott's excelent example. There is really no reason why such restrictions on public smoking should be controversial, it is just common sense.
This ban is an affront to democracy and to peoples basic human rights. Who has the right to tell people what they can and cannot do with their own bodies and their own lives? The nasty little Hitlers behind this should be shot as they can think of nothing better to do with their time than interfere with and control the lives of ordinary hard working people.
Smoking is such a filthy & disgusting habit that it makes me feel ill even talking about it. If smokers were simply shot, it would save both time AND money. ;) :P

I think it's one of those quivering dichotomy situations. He'd like to see smoking banned but it's against his anti-nanny state ideology. :D
To ban smoking in public places such as pubs, clubs, restaraunts etc. would be leading the entertainment business to bankrupcy. Smoking for many people is a way of socialising whilst as we know for the the majority of people it is an addiction which is terribly hard to beat. If people knew they couldn't smoke whilst out having a drink or meal etc, I don't think they would even bother going out. As every smoker knows, the time you smoke and crave more is when you have had a drink. Restaraunts usually operate a non smoking policy in one side of the venue only, i think that is a good enough compromise. Non smokers who go into smoking areas of pubs etc only bring it on themselves by going into that environment, when a non smoking alterative has been provided.

tosh, tosh and more tosh.
Ireland banned it some time ago, i believe we are still waiting for the collapse of the entertainment industry... In fact after a slight fall in takings in the public house industry they've actually risen.
It's an entirely inadequate compromise as unfortunately smoke cannot read the no smoking sign and persists in drifting around even when asked not too.
