Sorry I don't know of any particular ska nights in Sheffield. There are plenty of good ska bands in Sheffield.

Let me know if you find a ska night.

Rubysoho

There used to be one on London Road, but unfortunately not any more!

Best think you could do is go in Tut N'Shive and ask John (the owner) - if anyone knows of one it will be him!!

You might find the odd ska tune played in Fracture on a Friday at the Corp as I know Rice used to play it - been that long since I've been tho' things could have changed (probably gone all emo!!).

mimicraze
10-11-2004, 15:56
Yeh it has gone all Emo, which is ok by me, do like some Emo stuff. But the most you'll get at CORP is a Capdown tune played once on a night, and also a corny pennywise cover or something, which they seem to think is ska. oh well, we need some real ska, capdown, solabeat alliance, and all that!

Fowler

We should arrange a night!

drummers are always the hardest to find when forming a band.

well it isnt so much finding a drummer, its finding a GOOD ska drummer. you play ska guitar ian? Cant remember now.......

it's a pity you can't find a good drummer. I'm shocked no one on the forum knows one.

There 2 or 4 good ska bands around Sheffield.
Bison are playing in the next couple of weeks at Mappin St.
A is for Ape are looking for a new drummer and the catch it kebabs have got a new album out. All 3 are worth seeing I think.

It must be sign, I had a dream last night that Lightyear had reformed and now I come on to read this.

Has Corporation fallen out with Household name or something? Every major tour seems to miss out Sheffield including the up and coming Capdown one, although i heard a rumour they were set to play Leadmill.

Anyone off to see Leftover Crack this Saturday? Is it true it starts at 4pm to make way for the club night after? See what i mean why is this at Zero and not Corp??????????

Rubysoho
11-11-2004, 12:52
Club Zero are also having Lars (from Rancid) and The ******** in Feb 2005, why are these bands playing at Club Zero and not at The Corp - seems ridiculous to me???!!!????

no_rules
11-11-2004, 14:34
hi rubysoho
i'm the guy who books these shows, and i'd like to ask why it's ridiculous... why should bands play at the Corp? the corp very rarely plays these bands as part of it's nights anymore anyway???
Have you been to a show at .Zero? The PA in there is fantastic, you don't have to wade through **** to go to the bog and the venue is just the right size for good, sweaty punk shows...
i'm the guy who used to book the shows at the Corp, back when the household name bands played there, along with the other punk stuff, when i left the punk promoters chose to carry on working with me, i did put a few shows on at the Corp after i left (Anti Flag / Suicide Machines) but i've since encountered problems which mean i choose to put my shows elsewhere - their loss not mine, and certainly not yours as the bands are still playing sheffield...
why the corp should be entitled to these bands is beyond me....
Capdown haven't been on household name for about 3 years, but their December tour does i believe have a date at the Leadmill...

Stu
www.no-rules.co.uk for Lars and the ******** and many more shows like it....

remember punk belongs to the punks ... not the businessmen

Hi Stu

Sorry never meant to offend, just didn't understand why things had moved to .Zero - not a place I would have thought about checking for gigs (only knew about Lars cos someone e-mailed me) as it carries no tradition of rock/punk gigs - if its as good a venue as it sounds then fair play to you for booking decent gigs there!!

Lets face it, Milton Street venue is a bit ****e for gigs anyway, no proper stage, iffy PA system etc.

I don't think Corp should automatically get these bands, it's just for me (not living in or getting in to Sheff too often) its the first place I look for gigs etc.

Ruby

If Capdown are any good then I would fancy going, I know Bad Manners have played a couple of times in Sheff this year but have always been busy.

PM me if iyou are going to arrange something please.

Thats a pretty lame point because until not that long ago wasn't corp Unit? Which was without a tradition of live shows

Anyways, I've been to gigs in Zero at least as far back as a year ago...maybe 2.

Is it true the Left over Crack gig is set to start at 4 in the afternoon to make space for a dance night after it?

This is my main problem with gigs not being at Corp, when you see them at Leadmill you get kicked out after but at Corp included in the ticket price you get a club night after.

Now if their was a ska night on at Zero following on from LOC that would be a big bonus

The Unit may not have had a tradition of live shows but Corp DOES - which is what I actually meant.

If you pay attention to the last paragraph of that post you will see why I tend to look to the Corp for gig listings etc - and seeing as I don't get into Sheff much anymore I'd never heard of .Zero until I found out about the Lars gig.

Congratulations to you though for going to gigs there for the last couple of years - Well Done!!

"This is my main problem with gigs not being at Corp, when you see them at Leadmill you get kicked out after but at Corp included in the ticket price you get a club night after."

but thats why gigs at the Corp tend to be much higher priced, at least for touring bands.... also I can't see the Saturday rock night at the corp doing much for the Leftover Crack audience.... most of my shows are on saturdays and i'd rather than stick rusty nails in my eyes than listen to the crap they play.... (no offense metallers who are into that stuff)
wherever i booked the show i'd have started it at 4 with an eye to finishing around 10.15-10.30 because a lot of people travel and they start leaving around 10.15 due to sheffields excellent transport links with the rest of the north!!!

rubysoho, none taken, was just trying to point out why the Corp doesn't have a god given right to any show... your views as the corp as a venue correspond with pretty much everyones opinions
i've asked.... yes it did have a good reputation for live shows, but that was thanks to bank street, which was an excellent venue, the new room at Corp COULD have been good, but i feel live music has taken a back seat to the club nights - and why not? if that brings in the punters.... and the fact someone emailed you showed the promotion is working... hurrah!

venger - capdown are amazing - though they aren't as ska as they once were....

for all ska fans come down and see the Pietasters on the 27th Nov at .Zero, catch it kebabs are on along with 3 other top ska bands... it will be a good un....

I was at Zero this Sat for Leftover Crack.

Got there about 5pm, it was a monster line up - 8 or 9 bands (I forget as the beer flowed ;)) with Leftover Crack coming on approx 9pm...I was a bit sloshed at this point heh.

Enjoyed it immensely, place was near to capacity I believe.

Really REALLY liked Five Knuckle (who are from Bristol) and was impressed with local band The Arguments who I'd not seen before.

8/9 bands, 5 hours of live stuff for £8 ticket. cant complain.

Thanks a lot stu for organising, lots more ahead too!

I went to a gig around 1996 in the WMC behind the flats around St Georges in Netherthorpe - I was under the impression that it was supposed to be Blind Mole Rat's last ever gig.

They were a great band (the one and only time I saw them) and were supported by another great band but can't remember exactly who - I want to say Bender but could be wrong. I never heard of any Blind Mole Rat gigs after that I assumed they had split or whatever. Anyone know different?

Got my tickets last week. Very ****ing excited.

Title for smallest ,sweatiest show of the tour must however go to the Vic in Derby. That will be sheer brutality in a gig. It only takes about 50 people to get the place so hot sweat pours off the ceiling.

Any chance of you getting to Voodoo glow Skulls to stop of here on their next tour?

it's already sorted mate, they're here 30th April....

in fact for all ska fans it's a ska weekend!!! 2 quality US acts...

Fri 29th April - Streetlight manifesto - ex catch 22 - all the good members who were responsible for writing the keasby nights LP
+ phinius gage and buzzill venue tbc £6
Sat 30th April - Voodoo glow Skulls + Filaments + sonic Boom 6 + arguments + more .Zero £8 adv

i'm gonna do a limited number of special £12 tickets which gets you into both shows

glad you got yer Lars tickets sorted, there's about 50 left in total at all outlets... i agree Derby vic will be insane!!!! i think official cap is 200 there, and i've been to a few sold out shows there and it ain't pleasant - great atmosphere though!!!

Yeah official capacity may be 200 but how many guests will be blagged in for the Lars gig????? Especially with Muggsy living upstairs these days.

To the rest of the forum I swear my Voodoo post wasn’t a pre orchestrated plug attempt, I'd just got my mail out from way ahead and was gutted to see another ska band skipping Sheffield. Obviously my worries were unfounded.

I'd be very interested in some of those £12 tickets, keep us informed are both events at Zero?.

Fatpiggy is a pro dj and I do run one of the larger dj agencys in Sheffield the noose and gidbbetts actualy more chart party and commercial dance but I do get time for ska although not as much as I,d like Sheffield doesn,t seem to pay the money I,m affraid but I will be around in April on the first at the Boardwalk doing a charity night for mind with loads of mixed bands then at the Embassy Mansfield rd on the second with ska gangsters. Then at the Waverley Brinsworth for the Yorkshire scooter alliance do in the afternoon of the 17th of April and then at the Boardwalk again on the 21st of April with the toasters and there will be no Kylie or spicegirls in sight (or I may play can,t get blue monday out of my head I quite like that one). keep skanking....jamie...

Hi there, just to let you know, there is a Ska night at the Old Harrow pub at Gleadless on 17th December, my friend went to the last one, there were only a few people there (all got their old braces and doc martins out!!) but they really enjoyed it and appreciated all the great music, so once word gets around, it should really get quite popular. Hope this helps, and enjoy if you decide to go. :)

The Big and Regatta 69 are both top quality bands playing Sheffield for the first time and it would be great to give them a quality reception.

Its on December 6th at D&R Live, its a fiver to get in, doors are 7:30 and it should finish up at midnight at the latest.

I'm not purposefully being thick, but what is a Ska ? And why is it called 'Ska'?

fatpiggymc
15-05-2006, 16:16
Ska started out in Jamaica in the late 50's as a mix of mento and American R&B and Jazz these sounds were formed into a different new music that was played in the Dance halls, and the backing sound was basicly a ska, ska, ska, steady beat, and was adopted by the English Mods and later skinheads then it later turned into reggae as it's beat slowed. Then in the eightys ska had a revival, but this time it was mixed with punk by bands such as the Specials, Madness, the Selecter, Badmanners and the Beat and since then it has evolved even more with bands like the Toasters,Sum 41, No doubt and the newer Ordinary Boys and Dead 60's. Have a listen there are bound to be some you like you can try the moonska europe site there are loads of free downloads on there

This ones's a must for all ska fans, a DJ set from Jerry Dammers at DQ-The late bar on Thursday nov 2nd!

Press Release

A very Special Love Sheffield Music Hate Racism night for Bass Bar at DQ-The Late Bar Jerry Dammers and the screening of the classic film ‘Who Shot The Sheriff’ on Thursday Nov 2nd

Yes that’s right the Sheffield Love Music Hate Racism group are moving on fast. Having launched their brilliant double album of Sheffield music on Thursday October 5 2006 at The Hubs their next move is to bring the legendary Jerry Dammers to Sheffield on November 2nd when he will introduce the screening of the classic Rock Against Racism documentary ‘Who Shot The Sherrif’ and play a DJ set.

The LMHR group have teamed up with the Sheffield based Junglist Alliance, promoters of the jungle-based Bass Bar Thursday night at DQ-The Late Bar on November 2nd for a night of chat, film and bass driven music.

Jerry Dammers, although once a Sheffield resident, (between the ages of 2 and 10), puts in a very rare appearance. Jerry in case you missed out on the guy before was the man who founded the Specials, whose first single, ‘Gangsters’ released in 1979 helped launch the whole Britsh ska scene as well as hitting the charts at the number 6 position. The single went out on the brand new 2Tone label, backed by ‘The Selector’ by The Selector and distributed by Rough Trade.

‘Gangsters’ was based on ‘Al Capone’ released by Prince Buster in 1964 and this choice of material; the make up of the band; alongside the name ‘2Tone’ with its black and white chequered graphic and rude boy logo based on Peter Tosh (the Wailers) was more than a gimmick; it showed a strong commitment to respect for black British and Jamaican culture and unity, in the face of the growing racism of the times.

Jerry signed up The Selector, Madness ,The Beat and The Bodysnatchers, amongst others to 2Tone, making it one of the most influential labels in British pop music. In addition to his continuing success with the Specials, including writing the anthemic ‘Free Nelson Mandela’, Jerry played a big part in promoting Rock Against Movement, and helped organise Nelson Mandela’s 70th Birthday Tribute which was broadcast worldwide from Wembley Stadium in 1988.

Rock Against Racism was a broad-based political movement which united black and white musicians with the high energy of the punk, ska and reggae music of the times to put out a positive and strong message of unity and played a key role in stemming the rising influence of the nazi National Front and British National Party in Thatcher’s Britain.

Rock Against Racism is the link with the new Love Music Hate Racism movement with which it shares similar objectives and to kick off the evening on November 2nd. Jerry will be introducing the screening of Alan Miles’ documentary ‘Who shot the sheriff’ charting the story of one of the most exciting mass movements in British history. The film which tracks the rise of fascism in the 1970s and its successful overthrow, largely achieved through Rock Against Racism features rarely seen archive footage of The Clash, The Specials, Steel Pulse, X-Ray Spex, Sham 69 and Misty and Roots. At the same time it charts the new Love Music Hate Racism movement with footage of Ms Dynamite, The Libertines, Babyshambles, Hard-Fi, Estelle and Billy Bragg.

There will be a fair bit of ska (of the old school Jamaican variety) played at the Love Music Hate Racism hip-hop & ska night in the Raynor Lounge this Saturday 14th October, when DJs from Phon-etics and Quoi de Neuf? will be taking turns at the decks to bring you a night of hip-hop, ska and whatever else takes your fancy in a celebration of musical diversity and cake.

Non-students are welcome and advised to email frenchhiphop@googlemail.com in advance so we can stick you on the guest list to make sure security let you in the Union building.

On the ska side, don't forget that Jerry Dammers (Specials/2Tone label) is in Sheff on Thursday Nov 2 at DQ-The Late Bar. He's come up with the film 'Who Shot The Sheriff' all about the ska and Rock Against Racism gigs of the early 80s the film's got lots of rare footage of the 2Tone acts (the label Jerry started), Clash gigs etc - he's introducing the film at 8.00 pm and then playing a rare DJ set around 11.30, lots of ska guaranteed. £3 on the door.
