It was by Paul McCartney, and I remember back when it was in the charts I loved it, especially the video to it.

Please forgive me I was only about 7 or 8 at the time :loopy:

No, Paul sang Ob-La-Di, although it was a hit for the Marmalade. Every time they wrote a dud, they didn't bin it. Instead it was - 'Hey Ringo, we've got another song for you to sing!' Took the p*ss out of poor Ringo, didn't they?

While not my favourite Beatles' song I've nevertheless got a soft spot for Ob La Di.

You have to put it in the context of the times. In 1968 reggae had just started to become popular in Britain (discounting the ska, blue beat craze of the early 60s). McCartney had heard some of the early reggae records that had come into the country and being the musical sponge that he is, came up with a pop/reggae song.

Lennon did the same with Yer Blues. The blues boom of the late 60s was in full swing when John wrote this one.

Aside from the Beatles... anyone remember that horrendous tune "Happy Birthday" that came out in the early 80's...

Worst of all you couldn't get the darned tune out of your head... in fact it's back again... *heads off to put head in bucket of cold water*

I see the Top 100 Worst Records (http://www.channel4.com/entertainment/tv/microsites/G/greatest/pop_records/results.html) contains NO Beatles records.

There's one by David Bowie, but that's 'The laughing gnome' so that's OK then.

I can't believe Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da was voted as worse than ANY football song! (Although arguably World In Motion and Three Lions are pretty decent football tunes). It might not be the strongest Beatles song but worse than the likes of Fog On The Tyne?! WTF?!

Marmalade had a big number 1 success with this and it seemed to be around for ever in 1968.
The club bands always played it, it was never off the radio and every time I hear it my memory kicks in to that wonderfull year.
1968 was a fantastic year for the classics.

This OB-La-Di thing cannot be taken seriously. Who on earth did the voting? We had a quick poll at work and most people voted for the usual crap - any football song, especially that Glen Hoddle/Chris Waddle thing, anything by Black Lace, Joe Dolce (Shaddup Your Face), St Winnifred's Choir, The Tweets (Birdie Song), Timmy Mallet, definitely Cliff's Millennium Prayer, Rolf Harris even got a vote for Stairway To Heaven, but no Ob-La-Di. In fact, everyone quite liked Ob-La-Di though most had only heard the Marmalde version (which must be the one in question as the Beatles did not release it as a single).

Channel 4 did a similar chart/poll some weeks back. No Ob-La-Di on there either.

This originated from an Australian TV show called The Money Or The Gun. Every week a musical guest had to perform Stairway in their own style. They ended up with 20+ versions, but Rolf's was the best.

There is a CD of the most interesting versions here:

Rolf even appeared at Glastonbury about ten years ago, singing live on stage.

Exactly Nomme. So who did vote in this recent poll. Forgot about the Laughing Gnome or I would have voted for that at work. It's so bad it's not even on Bowie's best of 'compilation' albums.

There is another cover by the Hue's Corporation circa 1974. Along with Rolf and Zappa, that's the 3 versions I know about.

Apparently there are version of Stairway To Heaven kicking around by pop/soul/jazz singer Kate Ceberano (she's Australian, Mojo, so maybe you've heard it?). Also a version by Australian reggae band, Vegimite Reggae. And there's even one by the London Symphony Orchestra.

Haven't heard any of them but you can listen to them here:-
