Many years ago when I was a regular drinker in the Rose and Crown (Minnies) at Stannington I was told of a story which when written down looks plain silly - but there may be some of you out there who can remember or know someone with the facts

Years ago there was a public rubbish tip on Loxley Valley Road - don't know its precise location, but it must have been past Long Lane, somewhere on the right. The story goes that one of the local breweries had a problem with a large batch of tinned beer - I think I was told that they were all short measures and therefore unsaleable. The cans had to to be disposed of and some bright spark had the idea of taking them up to the Loxley dump and burying them.

For some reason they were not buried deep enough and were discovered by a member of the public. Word spread like wildfire round the area and for days afterward cars could be seen at the dead of night coming back from the dump, their boots laden with cans of beer - apparantly there were literally hundreds and hundreds of cans.

Now this maybe a story that has some element of truth that has grown to be an urban myth but it has stuck with me for years and surfaces in my brain now and again, I have just been reading about the old Loxley Chapel and that sparked this train of thought.

So...has anyone anything to add?

I think the tip used to be on Myers Lane past the old Loxley Country Club

Heard a similar story but it was near Bradfield School where they dumped the cans, the pupils at the school found them.

Have just come across this post. The story was that the lager/beer was dumped on a tip that was situated on the lane where the golfing range is at Long Lane ,Loxley.Apparently the lager was tipped to save paying VAT on it and the shelf life of the lager would not last until Xmas of that year for it to be profitable to sell. All the lads at Wisewood were coming away with wheelbarrows full of the stuff.

...The story was that the lager/beer was dumped on a tip that was situated on the lane where the golfing range is at Long Lane... Yes - this is Myers Lane (http://www.multimap.com/maps/?qs=sheffield&countryCode=GB#map=53.41657,-1.55036|17|32&bd=useful_information&loc=GB:53.41646:-1.55516:17|sheffield) as sanman wrote. I used to dispose of rubbish there and occasionally I'd find something useful. I never found any cans of beer, though...:(

Totally different, But it reminds me of a beer lorry getting stuck in the snow between Woodhouse and Strabrooke in the late 70s, and it was fairly full at the time of getting stuck, Fairly empty when freed, There was a snowman in the field looking down on the lorry which the body was a beer barrel, someone could only get it that far over the field.
