Can you remember the gentlemans residence (Doss house) on West bar at the top of Corporation St & to the left between Ellis Son & Paramores(I think) & the paint shop.As a youngster we would look through the windows in the basement & see them on the penny lollup. What is that you may ask,well,it is a rope tied from one wall to the opposite wall which you placed your arms over & had a sleep.Sheer luxury.Poor S**s. This was in th 1940s.

Probably where the saying, "I'm that tired I could sleep on a washing line" came from.

West Bar Hostel, I believe it was called. My dad used to say for a shilling a man could get bed for the night with toast and dripping the next morning.
i actually there were not many dossers in those days there are more now. The people then seemed to be war victims rather than down and outs.
