Don't really have any experience in family tree forums but you could try this link.

Here are a number of websites:

http://www.1837online.com

http://www.ancestry.com

http://www.familysearch.org

http://www.genuki.org.uk

http://www.yorkshireparishregisters.com

http://freereg.rootsweb.com/

http://www.rootsweb.com/ (Probably the largest single resource on the net). In particular if you go to http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/ENG/ you can join a discussion group/forum for the English county of your choice.

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/

http://freecen.rootsweb.com/

http://www.familyrecords.gov.uk/

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

One of the best things you can do is get down to the Sheffield Archives on Shoreham Street - they are very helpful.

I'm a member of genesreunited.co.uk where you can contact other members who appear to be related to you and ask to see their family trees. I've not been using it that long and already have had contact with several distant relatives, which has helped me to make considerable progress in building my tree. It is free to register, but costs £7.50 to become a full member in order to view other member's trees.

Also, freebmd.org.uk is a really useful source of info.
