Walking at a pace to elevate your heart rate and so that you're just out of breath will help you to lose weight providing you're eating sensibly too. Have you done much walking? Twenty miles a day, every day, is a hell of a lot to start off with.

3500 calories = 1lb of weight

if you eat less and do more exercise you can easily loose 3-4lbs a week

Well, I wasted over 6288 calories on Sunday in London and lost around 2lbs. It would take a long time to walk that each day.

If you walked 20 miles a day, by the end of the week, you would almost be in London! :hihi:

There are a few variables to consider. Take a look at this calulator:

You would probably loose about a stone in weight but more in fat. The reason is you would gain weight in muscle Which weighs alot more than fat. You will look like you have lost alot more as you the weight will be leaner muscle so try working in inches rather than weight and you will be alot happier with the result.

I hope that makes sense.

I once had a walking holiday, following the Offa's Dyke Trail (highly recommended, actually. I had a really lovely holiday). I was carrying a pretty full rucksack, with tent, etc., was walking about 15 miles a day, and the weight dropped off me. I got stuck into local ciders, beers and pub food every night, but still lost plenty of girth in 10 days.

A few miles a day would suffice and then a nice Burger King to celebrate...Mmmmmmmm

It only takes a toffee to replace the calories burned in about 30 mins exercise. But don't let me put you off, I was at my best weight and fitter than I was at 20 when I combined exercise with a sensible diet.

Walking is excellent toning exercise, but not a useful way to lose weight in my experience. I've done loads of walking over the years with negligible weight change, up or down. This includes backpacking the 270 miles of the Pennine Way in 13 days in warm-hot weather. Walking just makes you feel much better!

Swimming just builds up muscel tone, I did it every day for one year, didn't loose any weight at all...I think it's best to loose tthe weight then start swimming to keep it off.

The problem with swimming to lose weight is that some people aren't strong enough swimmers to swim fast enough to get the heart rate up and be out of breath. If you're a good swimmer, you probably weren't swimming fast enough.

I can just about manage a few leisurely lengths, not because I'm not fit enough to continue, but because I'm such a poor swimmer.

I cycle about 25miles in an hour (on an exercise bike lol) usually in 2 30minute stints... I have the resistance quite high and it tends to burn 850 cals in the hour.... I dont look very attractive after that, I might add, but my legs are something else entirely! lol! :hihi:

I get bored with walking... and as for swimming, I do it at leisure as i'm supervising my sister and have to swim at her pace :) She's probably a better swimmer than me, but its a protective sister thing lol

It sounds like a STUPID idea. Just get the bus and use the time you save to do some proper exercise. i.e. running, football, squash, tennis, badminton, a martial art, boxing, the gym etc.. etc.. by all means try to walk everywhere you can where it's not gonna take you two hours plus?!!!!

What you really need to do is some stuff that makes you SWEAT.

I think it really is a case of no pain, no gain I'm afraid.

so the advise is - Don't swim to work! :hihi:

After 50 days you'd be in a position to judge if walking 500 miles and 500 more would make you the man to fall down at your lover's door.
