View Full Version : Is there any of those old TV antenna's still around?
You know the one's from the early 50's, I've been living in Canada for a lot of year's and wondered if there was just dishes now. I do come back for holiday's but never thought to look.
The reason I'm asking is we got our very first TV in 1954 and Dad put up the antenna his self. He'd shout from the roof, "Any picture yet" and we'd yell back, ( me and my sister's) till the picture was just right. That's not the best part, we must have a hole in the ceiling in every bedroom where Dad had dropped through.
So does any one have any funny stories about their family installing things like this and risking life and limb in the process.

Joto. You have just made me smile with a memory of just over 10 years ago.
My son who is now 30 was still living at home was very interested in CB we mas a 20 foot scaffold pole with a 10 foot Dipole on the top, he decieded to go in the loft to secure the guy ropes holding the structure which was mounted on the flat roof downstairs.
I came home at 1800 hrs came in the house and all

I came home at 1800 hrs came in the house and all I could here was Dad Help, he had managed to fall through the ceiling with one leg each side of the beam.
Fortunatly he was not hurt. I got him down and had to try and put the plasterboard back up before his Mum came home from work at 8 ,well I did as good a job I could do, his Mum came home early ,and for the first time in his life he had a cup of tea waiting for her, and her first words were "What have you done and how much do you want" His reply was classic just out of Frank Spencer " Ive had a little accident, but Dads fixed it sort of"
To this day that memory is priceless
That was so funny Sandie! I bet your son only did it once, my Dad must have been a glutton for punishment, being as he did it three times.
Sorry i'm a bit late in responding, but I could not get on the forum, everything is back now thank goodness  Did that work?

1953 we got our 1st TV called a "Cosser"..so we could watch the Coronation..The Arial (as it was called in those days) was made by my Dad at work..He was good at TV it was his hobby.. he made a DIY TV before the War on the same design as "Logie Baird" with a ply-wood wheel and a Neon lamp.
Wow Timbuck your Dad was a genius, Did you take after him in that department?
We we next door to watch the Queen's Coronation as our neighbour's ( the Atkin's) were the only one's on our street (Milnrow Rd) with a TV. There must have been twenty of us.
Joto what do these antenna things look like ?
Yes you're much too young to remember jongo  ours looked like a letter H made of wire or steel or something :hihi:
You mean you could get tv without a dish ?
Are you bored jongo?:hihi:
What makes you ask that Joto ?
Well I hope someone else comes on to keep you company, we're off to the daughter's now for dinner, that means I don't have to cook   bye
