Just returned from Kirkwall on Orkney back home to Inverness, where I met a retired Sheffield couple who moved there over thirty years ago.
Amongst their questions was are the Beach Nut Machines still there, with a free packet on the forth turn. I think I was right to say they ar long gone, but if anyone knows different please let me know

Yes Beech Nut, as per tree, the alternative was Wrigleys. Long gone because I think you had to insert something like 2 x 1d - the old penny, thus twopence? It was a small greaseproof-like pack and there were about five small oblong/convex pieces of gum covered in 'enamel'. This dates us folks.
Probably a must on dates as well?

The big three were Beechnut, Wrigleys Spearmint, and PK. And does anyone remember that green stuff someone manufactured, that used to crumble into bits after about five minutes chewing? It was a bit like wax.

You can still buy PK but it's in strip form not the little tablets. Same yellow wrapper though.

Are you thinking of Dentine?

Texas
26-04-2007, 17:39
No, Dentine was good. The green crumbly stuff appeared just after the war when rationing was easing just a little. It too was in strips. Dentine was in small oblong pieces and colored pinkish with a distinct antiseptic flavor.

What about Stimerol (?). The Black Ice gum being sold now reminds me of it.

Didn't Beechnut make Juicy Fruit as well as peppermint?

Oh now you have jogged my memory!! Similar shape and size to Beech Nut but in different colours and flavours, I think.

I once swapped the contents of Beech nut for a strong laxative that looked like Beech nut and passed them around to my entire class. I had about 5 packs in my pocket and the teacher noticed me giving out sweets and ordered me to give him the remainder which he stuffed right into his gob.

I was expelled for that little prank, and the class and teacher spent a couple of merry days attempting to pass their appendix through their anuses.

Happy days..

For what it's worth, the first time I ever tasted Juicy Fruit was when the American troops occasionaly got into Sheffield, it would be about '44. We used to get into town and if we saw a 'Yank' we'd go into the routine 'Gorr any gum chum? Sometimes they'd give you a full packet of gum just to get shut of you. Other times it would be 'Hit the road and take off! Or just F*** OFF.
The first time I tasted Dentine was in Egypt, in the early 50's,years before it reached the UK. Actually it has the flavor of cinnamon.
I cant believe we're discussing the finer points of chewing gum.

I was only thinking about these outdoor machines this week..I was saying to my hubby that there would be no chance of those or the chocolate bar ones anymore.they wouldn't last 2 minutes. We used to get on a bus and go down to hillsborough park and if the shop wasn't open we just used to get choc or chewing gum from the machine.Ahh those were the days.

Don't get too giddy about this but I think it might still be possible to get Beech Nut. I'm pretty sure my mum bought some not long back, in a multipack, possibly in Darnall. Could've been PK, I'm not too sure.

Maybe she's got a time machine.

I will ask her tomorrow and get back to you all.

There was also one called YZ back in the 1950s. It was the same sort of stuff as Beechnut and had a picture of an owl (wise head) on the wrapper. Anyone remember that?

Now everyone's into the gum thing, anybody old enough to remember that 'bubble gum' wrapped in a kind of waxed paper? It was massive if you hadn't a big gob. Color was pink and it tasted like the old pear drops. After that came the smaller stuff in balls, but the waxed paper stuff was the first I remember. We used to call it 'bubbly gum', never did manage to blow a decent bubble with it myself but some kids, Wow!

Hi Texas
Are you thinking of Bazouka back in the late 50's early 60's or was it Dentine

06-05-2007, 19:29
Hi Texas. I remember the big pink pieces of bubble gum too wrapped in the waxy paper. I also think it was called 'Bubbly Gum' and yes very LARGE bubbles could be blown from it, and if it burst it would end up all over your face!!!

Texas
07-05-2007, 17:54
I dont remember if it was called Bazouka or not, it was early 50's and I do think the same stuff was available before the war (39-45 turnout). But here's another thing about bubbly gum. Some kids would save the wrappers, I dont know what for, but save 'em they would, piles of 'em. Thats a lot of jaw ache and bubbles.

The round pink stuff was called Anglo Bubbly! They did a black one as well called Spooky. Bazooka was square and you got a tiny comic in it, featuring the adventures of Bazooka Joe, who had either a black eye or an eye patch. Some sort of eye defect anyway. You could send off for stuff like x-ray spex, if you saved enough comics. I think Bazooka made a black version as well called 'Black Cat'.

On the Beech Nut front, sadly my mum can't remember where she got it from but reckons it was almost certainly Darnall, as she rarely ventures further afield.

Stimrol was great! I'd forgotten that one. Gonna have to go on a mission to find some of these products. I feel a day off work coming on.

If I am thinking of the right thing I believe that the wrappers used to come with a transfer on that we used to lick and stick onto the back of our hands - or am I thinking of something else?

I know there used to be little books of 'tattoos' that you could get from those machines outside shops. I remember kids walking around covered in them. I never liked them though, cos they were hard to get off. Anything that meant having to spend more time getting washed was a bad thing.

I think you could get them in lucky bags as well. Wonder if they still have those?

Esther's sweet shop on meadow street in the 60's, used to have a beech nut machine in the doorway, it replaced a four boys chocolate machine that used to be there for some years. I used to walk past when the shop was shut and twist the handle, more than likely I would get a packet of beech nut for free as someone said you get a free pack every so many turns. sad thin is I hated the taste of the stuff so I would sling it in the road.
and my missus has just informed me that she last saw beech nut about 2 years ago, when she used to buy it from the petrol station on wordsworth ave.

Wasn't Beechnut wrapped in a yellow & green waxy type paper ??
Can you remember how great it was when you got one free on the fourth try.

I think todays youth would just rip the machine off the wall and smash it to bits and nick the money.

My Husband bought our daughter a 'Lucky Bag' last week and it had Bazouka bubble gum inside - complete with 'Tatoo' I couldn't believe my eyes. It was even the same shape (Kinda rectangle with the two longer edges thicker than the middle) so they are still making it somewhere (we are in Greece)

It doesn't look if it's marketed in the UK any more, 50 countries (but not here).

Actually, Beech-Nut still exists (We only make Baby Food now), but Beech-Nut gum is still made right down the street here in New York State at a place called Canajoharie Manufacturing under the name of "Beechies".

Beech-Nut sold off the gum segment some years back to Richarson's Candy, which has recently become Canajoharie Manufacturing.

You can find limited former "Beech Nut products"...in the US. However, the original company Beechnut is defunct...Although..you can not find Beechnut Peppermint gum it seems, sometimes the other flavors show up in stores who sell vintage candy and such. As for the green crumbly item..Possibly it was paraffin tiny bottles, sometimes flavored "usually red or green..which you could drink the flavor, then chew the paraffin...

We always used to ask for a ''tuppeny beechnut'' or a penny arrow bar :hihi: remember them?
Also does anyone remember the barley sugar sticks wrapped in orangey coloured cellphone and another stick, toffee flavoured with chocolate in the middle.

Hi All,
Bringing this to the top, having reched my mid-fifties, starting
to flash back to those care-free days of the 60's.

Here is a machine that recently sold at action, its post Decimil cash, was
there really a profit in selling some thing for a penny..

(I cannot post a link yet, but punch in BEECHNUT CHEWING GUM under
google images, and it appears a couple of bars down )

I seem to remember the 2d / 3d? machines were less 70's funky, ie:
a more solid green design like the product packaging.

Also does anyone remember the square pink gum that came with a sort
of confederate ' green' US banknote, always on the search for the $1000
bill as a kid.

Cheers,
John.

Emm Not sure.
Just googled Bazooka and it seems to the chunky blocks.
This was like 3"x2" flat pink gum, brittle but melted to soft
gum in your mouth.
I seem to remember the packets were greaseproof or maybe tear open
packets like trading cards.
The bill was half folded..

Cheers,
Jihn.
