Mr Blunkett would like to introduce a scheme to allow the public to contact their local copper directly via a mobile phone or text message. I think its a decent idea it would allow people to pass on info anonymously and it seems everyone in the world is texting these days so why not the police?
It could work the other way if they are hot on the heels of a suspect by passing out a description if there is one. I know in america they use a similar idea on the road network by advertising reg numbers that they wish to trace if a crime has occured
Any thoughts?

I think that was the joke
Just another silly soundbite.
All of these "text for this" measures seem to be more gimmicky than useful or practical.

And an indication of the government having an all too cosy relationship with the mobile phone companies.

It recently took police in Sheffield over 48 hours to respond to an attempted child abduction. Blunkett should improve the basic service first.
If ambulances and fire tenders are expected to respond to calls within a set target time I don't see why the Police shouldn't either.
Another time wasting gimmick. Wonder if it's one of Tony's ideas?

its a good idea for kids i think - but really more bobbies on beat would be better
There crying out for more police officers, The bullying of probationers is disgusting and leads to them resigning and leaving a good career.
Nothing is done or said to the supervisors that do the bullying,
